I was clearing out the cupboards and I have a wonderful old Aeolian Vocalion Phonograph and taking pictures of it just before and then looking at my BeoPlay A9

This Aeolian was from the Aeolian company in New York in the family for at least a hundred years were manufactured in the 1910s and 20s etc

The BeoPlay A9 is a hundred years later, but when i was looking at them besides one being crank driven and one being charged by electricity, they are both one point music systems

The Aeolian has the ‘graduola’ which from what i deduce is a tone control, maybe a bit like a bass / treble device

Anyway, i thought I would share my pictures and you might enjoy the comparison between the two

Michael, what an absolutely beautiful piece. Does it still work?

Yes

It doesn’t require electricity.

I have several records in almost original condition. They are so heavy. They aren’t really vinyl, maybe shellac, or something else and are written with “zonophone“ on them.

Pop a Beosound Level and a couple of bottles of cognac in the bottom and you have the forerunner of the Orient Express travel trunk.
