Hi all,

I am new to this website and sure could use some help. I have a Beogram 4002 that I purchased new in 1976 then boxed up in 1986 and returned to service in 2009. Then the tonearm would not lower so I sent it to an expert in St. Louis, MO. who refurbished it and all was great until last month. I have contacted him but he does not do repairs so I am on my own for now.

My problem started when pushing the 33 RPM switch to clean the vinyl, the platter would rotate about 10 times then stop. Trying over and over would get no movement then suddenly another 10 or so turns. Finally all seemed OK and I was able to play both sides of an LP. Next day I was back to the same problem but repeated trying could never get the platter to turn more than about 10 rotations.

Not knowing what I was doing I opened the unit and found a second identical plug on the circuit board just above the one that the motor plugs into. By plugging into that one the motor turned with no problems. I was told that perhaps there was a resistor bad and I should see what the output was on the first plug in. Got nothing when I attempted to check so I thought I would see what the 2nd plug in read. Could not get a reading there either so I touched the contacts on the top side of the board just above the 2nd plug. A pop was heard and maybe a small flash (not sure if I really saw that) from what I think was he bottom side of the circuit board. Now I have nothing. No lights come on or anything else.

I am pretty good at figuring out old mechanical stuff but am lost when circuit boards and small electronics are involved. Sure sounded like a fuse had popped but I don't see anything that resembles what I know as a fuse.

I don't know how to post pictures here so I have my photo of the circuit board here   http://www.kanuti.com/temp/4002circuitboard.jpg

I have marked where the plug going to the motor is as 1 and the plug that had constant power until I shorted it as 2.

Am watching eBay for parts but until I am a little more sure of what I need hate to buy anything.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Phil

The second connector, similar to the one used for the motor, is for a LED on the front.
Connecting the motor here is an almost certain cause for problems.
Bad design, I'm afraid.

I was wondering what that connection was for. Since there is no LED on the front of this unit would I be correct in presuming this circuit board was used in other models? If so do you know which ones? That might help me in my search for parts.

I only connected the motor there a couple of times for a few seconds as an experiment. That made me think that the motor was not the problem.

Hello,

Here's a pic of my Beogram 4002(5514), as you can see the "unknown" connection is for the lamp.

They all have the LED connector but only very few have the LED.

If you want to ship the deck to an expert repairer in the USA, I can recommend one.

I would appreciate contact information. Not sure what I am going to do yet but if I can't figure it out I won't have much choice but to send it away for repair.
