Hello again

I've just bought this 8002 and I'm having some problems with the sub-platter. The turntable now rotates (rebuild the suspension and the arm carriage mech) and the only fly in the ointment is the edge of the sub platter scrapes the chassis all the way round, and has done for some while looking at the witness marks on the chassis.

I have a couple of theories, and I would really appreciate some advice.

Do these bearings wear?  There doesn't seem to be any adjustment on it.  Putting a small plastic shim in the bottom increases the height, but then the wobble is huge because the shaft seems to locate at the bottom of the bearing, not the sides.

Is there a rubber band or something missing from the sub-sub platter/spindle?  It looks as though it may be shaped to fit one, but the sub-platter seems to fit level and snug without.

Everything else seems to be working ok, so if I can sort this out I'll be very pleased.  The dust cover is very good, the veneer at the left front corner has been damaged in transit to me, but not terribly.  The aluminium surround also took a bash on that corner, but as it is square I can just turn it to put the damaged corner out of sight near the tonearm for now.

Perhaps the best bit of news was the cartridge - an MMC2!  The plastic guard had come unglued from the metal can, and the cantilever was totally unprotected - but INTACT!  Looking under a loupe, the tip looks PERFECT! Lets have a Party !!!

I was in such a hurry to protect the cantilever that I glued the guard back without remembering to take a photo. Embarrassed

I carefully swapped it over with the MMC5 in my Beocenter 7700, adjusted the counterweight, loaded a record and pressed PH.  It not only tracks ok, but sounds great.  Quite a result!

So, get this 8002 sorted out, fix up the Beocord 8004 I picked up for a song, grab a Beomaster 8000 and add in my CDX and relegate the 7700 to the bedroom, and I'll have quite a nice 8000 system.  Anyone got any MS150.2's for sale?  Cool

I tried to edit my message, but for some reason that doesn't work.  Progress, eh?  Wink

Of course the aluminium surround isn't square, and will only fit one way.  Silly me Embarrassed

Typical symptom of a broken main bearing nylon insert. It happens often if the Beogram was
transported with the heavy platter mounted or just put down too hard.
The whole weight of the platter, hub and subplatter rests on the very sharp pointy tip of the hub spindle.
Only fix is to replace the nylon insert. I had a couple made some time ago and I may still have one.
Push up the old nylon insert by inserting a tiny watchmakers screwdriver or similar through the
tiny hole at the bottom of the main bearing brass housing. That's from below the Beogram.
Then, when the nylon insert has been raised to vertical, pull it up using needlenosed
pliers from above (takes a little practice and controlled force).
Insert the new insert the opposite way. The new insert does not have an indent for the spindle tip,
that will have to be made to suit.
Assemble the whole thing. The platter will wobble a bit. Make sure the platter is level with the surrounding
aluminum surface and press down on the platter using both hands flat on the platter and use "controlled" force
to create the new indentation.
If you make a mistake, you can flip over the insert and get a second chance.

Hello Martin.

*Exactly* the kind of answer I was hoping for!  If you do have an insert available that would be great.  If not, do you have any suggestions as to where I may be able to get one?  i suppose the same question for the aluminium surround - the rest of it is pretty good - nothing a clean up and some adhesive foam tape won't cure  Smile

I'm off to go have a play with it.

If it is of any help to anyone, here's a short YouTube film of the problem.

Thanks

Thanks to Martin pointing me in the right direction, the 8002 is now playing nicely - literally :)

Here's a clip of it in action.  I'm using the 900RG as the amplifier, so the RIAA is all messed up hence the tinny sound.

So, that's the first of my 3 'dream Beograms' acquired, only a 4000 and an old 3000 to go.

(I wonder if I could put a quad preamp from a  6000 in either the 4000 or the 8002.  The 8002 seems to have plenty of space Smile
