Depending on the drive type, there are ways to get the tapeheads to disengage but
the problem is that the drivebelts are slipping. Because the moving of the tapeheads puts
the max stress on the belts, this is what usually fails first and even if you manage to
disengage the heads they will lock up again next time you press play.
Replace the belts.

Thanks Martin

Are the belts difficult to replace/1 or 2 belts? (somehow I always thought it was direct drive??)

 Are they easy to get?

It all depends on your skills.
There are two deck types; One has one belt, the other three.
The latter is a bit tricky to work with.

I can supply belts for both types.
