Hello all,
I'm restoring an old Beogram 1200 which has had the DIN cable hacked off for a couple of phonos
Having bought a new DIN connector I just need to get the cable but I'm not sure what I need to get!
Am I right in thinking its shielded cat 5 cable? Any suggestions and /or links would be great!
Cheers
You just need a shielded two conductor cable, no reason to complicate things
Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.
Probably is the original cable with the RCA connectors also suited. Just cut off the RCA's and solder them into the DIn plug.
The DIN connectors do follow the agreed wiring standards for left and right channels input and output.
It's not just a dual lead shielded cable, this is where many owners go wrong;
The cable should have separate signal ground and protective ground. Each signal lead has a signal ground around it.The two are then placed inside a separate (shielding) ground.
The signal grounds runs from the pickup cartridge coils to the center pin in the DIN.The outer ground runs from the Beogram metal chassis to the metal housing of the DIN (amplifier chassis). If they are connected together, one is left out or they are swapped, you will get hum.

That's the cable normally fitted I suggested. Otherwise someone swapped that original one with another cable with RCA's.
The latter is unlikely, but not unthinkable.
Thanks for the replies - seems like the easiest option is to keep the original cable but solder on a new DIN connector.
However, if I need to increase the length of this phono specific cable (i.e. the original cable has been cut short) can anyone point me in the right direction to buy some?
I have been using Cat 6 cable using 2 strands for the ground (chassis) connection, no problems.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
@ Søren Mexico - thankyou, I'll have a search for cat6 and give it a try!
Update - looks like the the original cable was removed completely and a neat job done of replacing it with a dual shielded cable - this means I'm going to need to replace the entire cable to get it back to factory spec.
@ Dillen - I can easily source dual shielded cable but as you say I need a protective ground as well, can you suggest where I can get this type of cable from? (BTW the BM1200 lamps arrived safely!)
