Heard about Designated Survivor but haven't watched it yet. Reminds me of the new Battlestar Galactica, where the Secretary Of Education was the highest ranking govt official left alive after the Cylon attack and became President.

Wow, I never finished that series, and it's been so long since I watched it I should go back and check it out again.Of course I keep saying I should do that with Lost too.
Just started, last night, a BBC series Wild China which is a nature show but seems very well done and interesting.
I did that with Lost and I loved it.
Heroes is now dragging on a bit
I watched Prisoner (Aussie TV show from like eons ago) back to back every night at 630 and it took me either 2.5 years or 3.5 years to watch. Everyone at work was sick of me talking about it i'm quite sure. :-)
I am currently watching Babylon 5 (for the first time). Almost done with the first season and I must say I really like it!
Also I like that fact that they used Newtek's Video Toasters for the CGI, and as the rumour has it, at least part of the first season was done on Amiga computers!

I well remember B5, have the whole series on DVD. An outstanding science fiction series, well written, and instead of just creating a universe/world for the show and then rambling around in it, they had an entire, integrated, planned out story arc. Some excellent performances too, it's amazing how much emotion some of the actors could convey given they were wearing a lot of rubber prosthetics to appear alien. Unlike all the Star Trek franchises after the original, and including the original to some extent, people acted like people. They were good or bad, fallible and human. The security chief was a sort of recovered alcoholic, the doctor was addicted to stimulants, everyone had believable problems and reactions to things. In the Star Trek universe, if you wanted a character to have even so much as a bad hair day or be pre coffee in the morning grumpy, they had to either be possessed by an alien or it had to be a dream sequence or alternate universe.
You're right about the effects, the early stuff was done on Amigas! I was working in visual simulation at the time this show was on the air, and we all used to come into work the day after it aired and say "did you see that? They added another ship, and the visual model has more articulated parts now!" One thing, Harlan Ellison, who hated how Star Trek TOS ruined his story that became "City On The Edge Of Forever" kept his name on B5 for the entire series and said it was the best he'd seen.
I assume, Aussie Michael, that "Prisoner" is an Australian show, and not the classic UK show "The Prisoner" which only had 17 episodes? I've not heard of that show.
American Horror Story Season 5, Hotel, just showed up on Netflix. Extremely creepy. In the first episode, you don't fully understand what's going on until the very last, and it's the choice of music that really make the light bulb go on over your head. Damn skippy, most effective use of a famous pop song ever, it really makes suddenly clear what's happening and smacks you up side the head.
Lady Gaga is incredibly creepy and unsettling looking in this one, pale blond hair and eyebrows, just a bloodless, pale look overall.

It's a brilliant show. The earlier seasons with Jessica Langhe were amazing. You can see that when she started it was probably only for a bit role but then she stole the show and was written in to it much more - i believe.

Haven't, but I've read numerous favorable reviews. I can sign up for things like HBO streaming without cable, I may have to wait until the first season is over, sign up for a free month, and binge watch it and Game Of Thrones (for some reason both my wife and I have both kind of lost interest in GOT, the only character we still kind of have any interest in is what's her name, Arya, who's training to be an assassin). I've thought about signing up for STARZ as they have Ash Vs. Evil Dead, Black Sails, and Outlander, three we like.
I did find something interesting, a show on Netflix streaming called "H.H. Holmes: America's First Serial Killer." What's fascinating is that his exploits, and how he built his huge home in Chicago which he called the castle, is just about identical to the hotel and hotel owner in American Horror Story: Hotel. Right down to the hidden vault, asbestos in the walls to damp sound, chutes to drop bodies down, etc. You can see where the writers got a lot of their ideas.
Cleve, I go back and forth on the Dieter Rams redesign of the Quads. On the one hand, they're minimalist and simple, oh the other the curves and wooden end caps of the originals have an organic quality I like. I guess a lot depends on what the rest of the furnishings in the room are like. I always found it interesting that Jon Dahlquist loved Quads so much he styled his DQ10s to look the same except for a cloth covering instead of metal. A lot of people don't know that his partner at the time was Saul Marantz.

Speaking of bad acoustics Cleve, I once read an article about Fabio's stereo setup. He had a ton of hyper expensive Mark Levinson gear, driving top of the line, very expensive Martin Logan electrostats, all in solid marble room, walls, floor, all hard marble with few furnishings. Ye gads, I bet that sounded, well, let's just say "interesting."

I haven't gotten around to watching Hannibal yet, but if you hit four the first time out it must be good. I've heard it'd gotten good reviews, I need to watch it, and I also should watch "Bates Hotel" as well, that's supposed to be quite good. I think my wife would like a short break from such shows after we watched the final season of Penny Dreadful and the 5th season of American Horror Story: Hotel in quick succession.
Last night rewatched, after a long hiatus, the old movie "Flash Gordon" that had Max Von Sydow as Ming, with music by Queen. Just an outstanding, over the top, campy, and gorgeously done romp. The set design, costumes, and colors are amazing, and Ornella Mutti as Ming's daughter Aura was just breathtakingly beautiful and sexy. You just know she'd stab you in the back the first opportunity she got, but you'd willingly go along with it and chase her until she caught you.
Very, very strange movie starring Henry Rollins as a social outcast who lives alone and avoids people, until things happen to drag him out into the world again. Very violent dark humor, but funny. Also, he's not what he seems, he's an immortal cannibal with a Biblical background. Very creative, I read they are trying to do a mini-series follow on to it, which makes sense, you could do a whole series on this guy and the story they set up. Movie is called "He Never Died."

okay, yesterday we was watching "Sicario". A really hard thriller about the private/official war on drugs at the us-mexican frontier with Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro and others. Good story, beautiful,pictures and a highly recommandable 5.1 sound.
shortly, we were absolutely addicted to "Burn Notice", a series about a former CIA agent, located in Miami. kind of cool, lol

Decided to edit this to add: I actually listen to a lot of music, but it's so widely varied and so much of it I seldom take time to post about it. Likewise with reading material, lately I've read quite a bit but haven't taken the time to share. Shame on me I guess.
Just finished the 2nd season of Netflix's "Marco Polo" which was excellent, as expected. While on Netflix, stumbled across a show called "Glitch" that is interesting. Have only watched the first of 6 episodes that they have, one season, so far. It takes place in a small town in Australia I believe, where six people crawl out of their graves at the local graveyard. Not zombies, but in perfect health, even though one died 150 years ago. One of the women who is resurrected is the late wife of the police chief, with predictable emotional results. Not sure where this is going, why and how they were resurrected, but so far it's fascinating, in no small part because it's so unfathomable. Very interesting.
Have added "Burn Notice" to my list, look forward to watching that. Just noticed that Bruce Campbell is in it, a favorite actor of mine.

Do you know if and when there might be a 2nd season? I finished the last episode last night, and wow. Just enough teasers, along with a potentially horrific thing with the woman who just had a baby, that are wide open and just an incredible hook! Very well done show, the acting was great as was the writing, the emotions portrayed are just very believable to me. I pity the poor cop.
anyone one else watch Vlogs?, kind of like their bite size formats and fresh approach to things.... Techmoan is good, a one man view into the world of obsolete media formats and devices (I never knew there were so many) and I'm ashamed to say I also like Casey Neistat 's approach to testing electric bikes, boards and drones..
we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.
I've always been fascinated by obsolete technology, including but not limited to audio/video and the associated storage devices like LP, tape, etc. That's why I always intend to keep at least one tube amplifier around, I tend to view it as technological archeology! In my day I've seen, just for audio, Edison Cylinders, 78 rpm records, LPs, 8 tracks, open reel, Elcassettes, cassettes, and CDR! I'm not old enough to have been around for the days of Edison Cylinders or 78s, but everything after that I've personally experienced when they were new and hot.
In computers, I remember 300 baud acoustic modems and bulletin boards (BBS), ARPAnet/Usenet and the online newsgroups, mag tape, large commercial disk packs, 8, 5.25, and 3.5 inch floppy disks, CDR, DVDR, and BlueRayR for storage. I remember when the people, usually kids working as interns, in large data processing centers were called tape apes as their primary job was to run back and forth and climb up the racks of tapes to pull them and mount them on the tape drives and then return them. I've even seen big data centers where the tape apes wore roller skates to make it quicker to move around!
I love old tech, but for my day to day use I've firmly adopted streaming in the modern world.
Another good video is of Dalibor Farny in Eastern Europe who sets up his own factory in 2011 to make Nixie tubes the knowledge and art of manufacture had died and with spirit and determination he self taught himself the the skill needed to manufacture including glass blowing.
I enjoy this spirit and determination.
