Enquiry: I have a B&O 4002. I rarely use this turntable. But when I attempt to use this, too often, the tonearm fails to drop. I have removed the cover plates and lubricated the mechanism. Normally, this causes the arm to drop. Now, not only does the arm not drop but the arm fails to return to start.

I believe that this turntable is humidity sensitive. I moved to Lapu Lapu, Philippines. My problems began after 5 months here. Can high humidity affect the 4002? Can this problem also occur with the 5005?

I am considering the purchase of a used 5005. But if I am going to be subjected to the same problems, I will have to select a different manufacturer.

Please respond quickly. I have somehow committed to buy a 5005 on Ebay. I need to have an answer to my humidity question.

the average domestic humidity values of between 30 and 50% are fine for almost all hi-fi equipment, but have you actually measured the humidity in your place ?

if your music room (where your 4002 is placed) is small, and the doors and windows can be closed then a sure fire way to reduce dust, static and lower the humidity is to get a BlueAir HEPA air purifier (or similar) and leave it turned on, the Blueair range are super quiet and energy efficient, I have just bought one on the advice of my Dad

my advice would be to download the service manual for the 4002, and get it professionally looked at by someone in the Philippines asap before it gets worse, also look at getting it restored to Condor levels whilst you have it in the workshop (you won't regret it)

meanwhile bid high on the 5005 and get a nice MMC4 cart for it, and enjoy the 5005 whilst your 4002 is being serviced, repaired and or restored to the highest level :-)

I recently had exactly the same problem with my beogram 4002...

There's a small screw under the copper damper (under the tone arm) that can be adjusted for the tone arm dropping. However, when adjusted correctly, the arm wouldn't raise at the end of the records, or it would raise like 30 seconds to late (not really good for the stylus)... The problem was solved by also checking the perpendicularity of the metal arm just below the solenoid (when activated), which can be adjusted by 2 screws under a spring parallel to the solenoid... That's all in the service manual... You should also check that the tone arm is 0 balanced.

I think all these little things + lubrication have an influence over each others...
