What I don't understand is that there are several router extender systems that will send a signal through your mains cables to any location in the house. As all active speakers need a mains connection wouldn't it have made more sense to go for a technology that could send the speakers signals through the mains, or would the decoding of multi signals (different to each speaker) been too complex?

Hi Graham,
I am sure that would be possible, but it would be far more complicated.
It would involve more 'electronics'.
You would need a decoder in every speaker to filter out the right channel.
And how would you tell the speaker where it is located (front, or......), how loud it should play (distance from listener)....??
To date the Wisa-technology is the best way to do this, by far.
