Hello, I am 3 Beogram 1700's deep into this so I you could say I am committed. However my technical knowledge is very limited. I recently purchased my 3rd 1700 in perfect condition, except when I went to play a record the tonearm lifted very slowly and not enough, resulting in the cartridge scratching across the record at the end. I researched the forums here and found the thread explaining how to free up the lift mechanism, it took some time to work the stuck piston free, but last night I was able to finally get it to move freely. I added a drop of oil to ensure it would stay that way and reassembled, only to find that now it will not lift up or down at all despite the lift being unstuck. It just drags across the aluminum and hits the record edge and there it sits with the record spinning. If I lift it manually onto the record and let it play till the end it returns by dragging across the record . Before when it did this it would eventually raise into the rest position albeit slowly due to the gummed up piston. Now it doesn't lift at all.

So can someone explain where to look next? What activates the lifting of the tonearm? I am pretty bummed because I thought it was going to be "the one" TT after this simple fix :(

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Mike

Sounds like you got the fairly large and long metal operating rod not mated correctly into the white sequence cam.
Note it has a small tab on the side out of normal view, this tab needs to go into the track in the cam.

OK I will check that out tonight, I have an extra 1700 TT I can look at for reference. Thanks for the help!

Back up and running! I believe the problem was caused by the small pin on the underside of the plastic "fork" at the end of the long metal shaft, the one that pivots on the lift piston itself. It had jumped out of the sliding electrical switch and made the tonearm sit way too low. Not sure why this was causing it to not lift at all though? I actually took the bottom covers off both turntables, set them on the backs of two chairs each so I could watch the movement from below! Pretty interesting. So the turntable with the lift issue is up and running, had about 3hrs of playing time last night w/ no issues! Sound is super bright and clean compared to the heavier sound of the Technics SL-23 it is replacing. Though of course I am wondering how much better it will sound if I upgrade the MMC 20E cartridge??

So now on to the other 1700 deck I have. Super clean cosmetically, it's only issue is when you plug it in it starts turning at 33 and will not stop. Pressing pause lifts the arm so you can manually place it on the record where you want, it will play to the end then auto return as it should, but the record keeps spinning. The speed will change from 33 to 45 and back when pressing the buttons, but not engage the arm. Any ideas?
