Hi All

I have a new beosound 5 and have been busily 'rebuilding' my music library after it was stored on a mac.

I now have a number of annoying issues that I'd like to resolve if possible:

When ripping CDs, sometimes I get different variants of artist name eg 'Agnetha Faltskog', 'Faltskog, Agnetha' and 'Agnetha F?Ltskog'. So looking for an album means I have to look in several different places.

At times the album title has also been incorrect

For perhaps twenty or so CD's I've ripped the artist is unknown/ title unknown and no track information.

A work around would be to put them in itunes and rip at 320 then move to beomaster. This is not my preferred way forward given loss of sound quality.

Is there some relatively easy way of being able to change the data on the beomaster so that everything under Agnetha Faltskog for example sits together and not under the several variations noted above and that correct album titles show?

Should I email Denmark? If so, does anyone have a good email contact?

Regards

David

Hi David,

that can be easily done.

There are plenty of tools for tagging on a mac.

Some are free, some at small costs - some are part of a ripping software (including ripping to FLAC).

Just do a google search to find one - do some testing to see if it pleases you.

Another way - if you like working with iTunes - might be to rip to ALAC (in iTunes) and afterwards convert your collection to FLAC.

That also is quite easy - and you would always have a backup of your files, just in case...

(Ripping with the BS5-ripdrive sure is convenient, when and if it works proper!

But you can only rip to WMA Losless, if you want losless files.

My advice should be ripping to FLAC or ALAC if you are seriously interested in losless music files and you want to use the files on other devices as well).

P.S. Can't give you an advice for a specific renamer/retagger, because I personally (still) am using MP3Tag on my Win-laptop (one of the reasons I keep that).

Try Bliss Music Tagger. With its new multi-source monitoring capability, you can keep all your music tagged to your liking/consistent wherever it is stored. Works great and very reasonable.

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies.

I've found a converter that actually works.. ie ALAC to FLAC.... I havent tried BLISS yet.. Are you suggesting BLISS will allow me to change the meta data in Beomaster?

What i did find though is interesting, possibly not surprising...... For the CDs I have ripped that come up with incorrect or inconsistent data via the beosound 5 I have ripped on my mac in ALAC, checked the correct details in itunes and converted to FLAC via 'mediahuman'. When playing this back on my beosound 5 and beolabs 9's there is a noticeable difference in sound quality between this version and the CD ripped on the beosound 5 ripper directly to the beomaster 5. I thought I was perhaps imagining the difference as both should technically be LOSSLESS, but then asked my partner and a friend to listen and we could all hear the difference in the quality of the track.

I assume the mac mini is just not as capable as a CD ripper as the beosound.. or is it infact the ALAC to FLAC converter as well,,.,,

I know I'm now being pedantic.. but the sound quality difference was noticeable. I sometimes wish my hearing was not as acute and that I could be happy with MP3s and my beosound 5 library organisation would be easier.....

Regards

David

If you use Bliss, must be sure that the BM5's BM-SHARE$ music directory is included in Bliss's metadata sweep.

Hi David,

what you have experienced probably has nothing to do with 'lower sound quality'.

The conversion from ALAC to FLAC does not change the quality.

And the MacMini is more than capable as a ripper.

Different ripping software (even with losless compression) don't always give the same results.

What you hear will be a difference in the volumen of the ripped files - imho.

I have often experienced that too, when using different software for ripping.

Please do one more comparison, and adjust the (BS5 playback) volume of the tracks that you have ripped in iTunes and converted to FLAC - to see if that makes any difference..

It can be very annoying, especially if you are using the MOTS function, to have these different volumen settings on different tracks.

My first suggestion. - assuming that you mainly rip with the rip-drive of the BS5 to WMA Losless - was to correct the tags afterwards.

Managing WMA Losless files (and the tags) on a Mac however isn't that easy.

I am not even sure that Bliss can do that.

On a Win-pc that is no problem, using MP3Tag (or similar) - but that won't help you, since you are on a Mac.

That is why I came up with the method of converting from ALAC (made in iTunes) to FLAC

The FLAC files can easily be tagged on a Mac (with TAG: http://sbooth.org/Tag/ as one example).

And the FLAC files can easily be played on the BS5..

However if you experience this great difference in sound quality (which I call sound level), it won't be that easy at all.

If you want losless files, you'd best skip the rip-drive of the BS5 (and the 'bloody' WMA Losless), and rip all your stuff with one external ripping software to assure the same sound output of all your cd's.

I am sorry to say that there is no 'relatively easy way' (if you don't want to include a Win-pc - with MP3Tag - in your 'hardware collection'!)

Personally I dropped the BM/BS5 with the rip-device, because they/B&O have choosen the WMA Losless format for the losless ripping - I wan't my files in FLAC!!

Maybe someone else will come up with  better ideas.

You could e-mail 'Denmark' - but don't expect more help from there than on BeoWorld!

Greetings Millemissn

Hi Millemissen, Barry et.al

Thanks for the replies.

I seem to lurch from issue to issue!!!!

Ive now found a music converter that I can manage- Music Pro. Happily been converting ALAC file to FLAC, checking the metadata etc. The odd issue I have now is that when converting files it doesn't recognise non english alphabets. For example

AGNETHA FÄLTSKOG - NÄR DU TAR MIG I DIN FAMN

Displays as Agnetha F?ltskog N?/r Du.....

I find this strange as in the Beosound file list it shows correctly, but shows incorrectly in the converter list and on the beosound 5 display.

Can anyone recommend a converter that actually recognises non English alphabets!!!! (Im assuming its something to do with the converter- i don't appear to have the problem for CDs ripped directly into the beosound)

Clearly life would be more straightforward if I had a PC, was happy with 320mp3s and only listened to English language music. I have a large collection of mainly Danish, Swedish language CDs of which many I can't rip via the resound as it doesn't recognise them, ironically.

As an aside if anyone wants a nice site to get great single/album cover art from.. I usually use 'discos'.... really lovely high quality cover art

Hoping there is a simple solution?

Regards

ooppps.. that should be www.discogs.com. Its very rare I don't find the artwork I'm looking for, including rare single picture covers.

Thanks again Millemissen, though my issue isn't the art work, it's actually something with the metadata.. which stuffs up during the converting process. I'll try Bliss and see if that fixes the problem.

With thanks

PRAISE THE BABY JESUS!!!!!

After playing with several digital music converters have found one that will display correct scandinavian language(s) characters!!! SO HAPPY..

SWITCH is the software I've used- for anyone else as pedantic as me having all the data showing correctly! A nice converter where you can choose sample and bitrate levels. I hope this is useful for others.

Other seemed unable to display with correct letters.

This calls for Champagne!

Hello, me too experienced the same problem and I made a very hard work with that. What I can suggest you is to rip the CD's with a PC/Mac instead of B&O CD Ripper. I noted that the PC with Windows Media Player is more quick and accurate than B&O CD Ripper. Then, you have to correct manually all the errors, as I did.....

Dear David,

I have had the same problem you have having: the BS5, the same of Windows Media Player and more ripping softwares/devices always search on the Internet the data of any ripped track, and the data present on the internet are usually full of errors and/or are incomplete.

In my opinion the only way to have the right data to any track is to correct them manually; it's so much work, but I have done that with te 1,800 CD's in my collection I have stored in my BM5.

You could even email to B&O, but in this case they are not responsable if a lot of data present on the internet are incorrect or incomplete.....

Have a good job!
