Last night I visited the Winchester B&O store to see their presentation of the new AVANT which was fantastic and as you would expect I was also very interested in the new BeoRemote One..

I was very impressed with both products and love the way the table stand works and also the floor stand with its double counter rotation mode where the TV can turn in the opposite direction to the screen which move the screen out or in the distance of the diameter of the stand base. This means the TV can be close to the wall, but when it turns it moves away from the wall to allow for a complete turn left or right without hitting the rear wall.

In my view the BeoRemote One will sell like hot cakes because like the Beo4 it is easy to use. It still has the LIST button, but the display scrolls through the commands smoothly. It can be used with old B&O products for all the basic functions.

The following are the key features of the new BeoVision AVANT:-

  • Listed below are some of the key elements:
  • UHD
  • Integrated 3-channel stereo
  • Recording possibility via external HDD min. 500 Gb (from DVB tuner the built-in DVB T2/C/S2 dual-tuners).
  • DMR (Digital Media Renderer)
  • Automatic Speaker Calibration via microphone
  • Integration of net radio
  • Integrated music services (Spotify and Deezer)
  • Media browser – view photos, film or listen to music from USB or NAS
  • 3D TV (not on UDH)
  • Bang & Olufsen Smart TV (called Web Media in menu)
  • HbbTV (Hybrid broadband TV)
  • 6 x HDMI inputs (1-5 UHD, and HDMI has HDCP 2.2)
  • Automatic Picture Control with Chromatic Room Adaptation
  • Superior sound and picture performance
  • LED backlight with 1.5 D local dimming
  • Omni-directional ambient light sensor
  • Global power supply
  • Bang & Olufsen Network Link based system TV for integrated setup and sound distribution
  • Wireless Power Link
  • Wireless LAN
  • Easy integration of an Apple TV
  • Flexibility in placement through multiple motorised placement options (floor, wall, table)

The recommended price of the new BeoVision AVANT in the UK is £5,995 including VAT

The recommended price of the BeoRemote One in the UK is £225 including VAT, but currently only available when you buy the TV. Apparently you will be able to buy it separately in about a months time.

Looking at the various reviews now appearing online the Avant is an out and out winner.

Latest specs ahead of the competition, the moving stands/ hinges providing the wow factor, and for most reviewers it seems that they cannot believe the price (in B&O terms!) notwithstanding the fact that it is still expensive relative to run of the mill TV's.

So will the Avant plus the WiSA speaker systems finally give B&O the financial lift that it needs?

Hopefully... if they can only produce enough to satisfy the demand while the advantage lasts. This is the turnside of pricing the products so that they will sell more. If they run out of production capacity, rectifying that would need large investments again. I suspect that is one of the reasons why so many products have been discontinued lately.

If you can get the grille in black I'm sold.

Amazing spec and amazing vfm

If I was Loewe I'd be VERY worried by this tv and the direction bno are going , in many ways the top end Sony's and Samedung's are finished too.

Who on earth would buy a  boring sony instead of this ?

I was told that B&O won't be bringing out any colour options from this release onwards. No dark grey's, white etc alternatives :(

Looks like we'll be stuck with the grill. But I can live with it, I think. Let's be fair, the TV is off for 80% of the day and, when off, the panel looks awesome. Like a BV12 on a floor stand.

I'd have mine on all day , use it as a monitor for my new black mac pro etc , gaming with a  ps4 ( might even watch the tv occasionally ) , this thing is blooming amazing , wish I'd waited now , makes the bv11 look almost stone age

Maybe I'll just stick a black apple logo over the grille :)

6 x HDMI inputs (1-5 UHD)

No, only HDMI 1 input can be used for UHD. And this with restrections: No 3D, no Picture in Picture, no recordings from UHD sources, no Volume feedback...

And if it's possible to receive UHD TV channels in future, you can't use the internal receiver (it's only a HD module), means you have to connect an external settop box to HDMI 1. And then you cannot connect any more UHD source to the Avant.

The sound figures are impressive (480 watts in total in a few litters or air compared to 192 watts for bv11) !

Absolutely don't like the design (makes me think of an old black Loewe crt) but will whait untill I see the real thing.

9.000 € with stand for 55" is still a lot of money though...

UHD HDMI 1-5, not HDMI 6. Recordings is from the internal DVB-module. What do you mean about no volume feedback? Of course there is no UHD-tv receiver in it since it does not exist. I think Full HD is enough for most by the way.

See manual, page 15:

HDMI IN (1–5)

The High Definition Multimedia Interface allows you to connect many different sources, such as set-top boxes, multimedia players, Blu-ray players, or a PC. HDMI 1 is recommended for UHD (Ultra High Definition) sources.

Some infos (Volume etc.) are shown on the screen when adjusted (same as BV 10/11), not on the top right display (only a sensor with green/red LED). These onscreen infos doesn't work with an UHD source connected to HDMI 1.

A big shame it misses the new HEVC H265 codec. This is the base for all UHD broadcasts, including Netflix in 4K.

How is it possible if Bang & Olufsen launches a 4K television in 2014, that HDMI 2.0 and H265 is not included !!!

According to FlatpanelsHD HDMI 2.0 is a software update that is coming. And I agree that the lack of HEVC is bad but you can get 4K content on the screen from other sources. Netflix is not integrated because of the costs Netflix wanted (or so I was told) and I guess a new Apple TV will take care of that problem. Perhaps HEVC can be added too, who knows?

For my part I bought it because it is an interesting TV and I wanted something different. It is 4K resolution and that is cool but I don't believe we will see too much 4K content very soon. I just hope it can scale SD and HD in a good way. It was hard to take a serious look at that during the launch.

By the way, the grey grille in the front. I did not like it at first, it made me think Bose SoundWave but I kind of like it more and more. Perhaps it can be removed and anodized in black? That would be a little more discrete I think. The frame around is still silver and very nice.

Yes it is true. The Beovision Avant 4K misses HEVC H265 and HDMI 2.0.

If you look at the specification, you will notice.

From the specs on 'my' site I read it different:

5 UHD-compatible HDMI's (which can only be done with HDMI 2.0)

The one HDMI on the top is not UHD-compatible - you probably wouldn't need that for that one anway!

That is also what my dealer told us yesterday evening.

N.B. If not, how would they have been able to demo UHD material from a UHD player (which by the way was hidden in the back of the Avant).

It might be that by now one one of the HDMI's (HDMI1) is 2.0 enabled (?). As of today there is not much 4K material to show, and the HDMI 2.0 specification has only just been released.

I don't worry - these things will surely be done/enabled in a (or more) future SW-update(s).

P.S All BV7-owners best get rid of their old gear now - the BV of today and of tomorrow has arrived!

Maab:
Two early questions for the people in the know:

-

-can the speakers be used as a dedicated center channel for a separate surround system (bl5s would be standing on the sides)?

if you want that, then you just configure the speaker to be so.

In fact you could - i you want to - make a very slim setup making the 'center' a center, the 'fronts' right/left speakers and add a couple of (small) surround speakers. Voila!

Lots of configuration opportunities in fact!

From twice.com:

"The Ultra HD set includes HDMI 2.0 connectivity, HDCP 2.2 and a pending software upgrade will deliver HEVC H.265 decoding, executives said. The set is equipped with a streaming media player, put at launch will not directly support any 4K UHD streaming services (like pending 4K Netflix), executives said."

People just hear about new technologies and want them directly in their living room.

The fact is that there isn't ANY TV nor ANY set top box / media player that supports the HEVC codec on the market currently. The first products are awaited for december, and it will be only a few niche products (like Dune).

Saying that this beovision is outdated because it doesn't support HEVC is just showing a complete misunderstanding of current tech.

If you buy a UHD TV in 2014, may it be a B&O, a Samsung, a Sony or anything, you have nothing to feed it with UHD content appart from a computer.

First the 4K question, it is. Now not enough codecs?

I am curious if you're able notice the difference between a full HD BluRay and a (lossy) H265 codec.

My mediaplayer plays 4K mediafiles over hdmi 1, so when do you need hdmi 2 while there isn't ant streaming content at the moment or in the near future.

Broadcasting/streaming content in 1080p isn't available yet due is bandwidth it needs. So what about a bigger res like 4K?

Managed to get to my local dealer at lunch. Saw the new Avant and BL20s.

My opinions of the new Avant:

- Looks better in person. Looks like a BV12 on a floor stand, when the speaker is up. Really love the stand, too.
- Design is rather 'formal'. Black, silver. I think I've moved on since owning the BV10/BV11. I quite like...colour.
- Less keen on the speaker, but could live with this
- Picture quality was superb for upscaled Blu-ray. Didn't see any UHD content. HD seemed good. SD very blocky.
- Audio wasn't as good as my BV11/BL11 combo. Sounded more like a BL7.4 centre speaker to me.

Would I get one? Yes, but definitely not in the short-term.

I definitely want the new remote though.

BL20s look stunning. Didn't get to hear them, due to a lack of time at lunch, but they look great.

+1

While there is definitely passion around the brand... There never seems to be enough codecs, or hZ or resolution or whatever to satisfy some.

All technology is always out of date.

The reality is.. This new set is fantastic. It's priced appropriately and sounds great. Not to mention it comes with a wonderful new remote.

Let's enjoy!!!

At last nights lunch watched a demo of gravity from a movie server which has got to be 720p and was fab, also an outstanding UHD demo as well.

If an update for the codecs is coming it wiil be a great tv and 4k content is not far away.

I took the remote apart (you just need a pin to "unlock" it. The aluminium is made of one CNC machined piece, much like Apple makes their products. The batteries are AAA and sits under the remote electronics. Genial design and no more broken battery doors! It looks like a small piezo speaker might be on the electronics so perhaps it can make sounds too(?!).

Heres a comparison between the Beo 4 and the BeoRemote One (I wonder if one can still mute the sound by pressing the middle of the volume buttons):

I like the "V" shapes that is on both the BeoRemote One (the bent shape) and The BeoVision Avant 55" (can be seen both on the sides and on the eye/led on the top corner etc). The aluminium on the V-shaped edges around the Avant makes me think of the Penta-speakers. I think they might go well together actually.

The back is also very nicely designed with sliding metal panels. Note that a black panel is removed here to reveal more connectors. The back is more elegant than BV11 and other TV´s because there are no small panels just the two silver panels and the black one. It looks really good so it can easily be placed in the middle of a room.
