olvisab:Hi Is it possible to use another center speaker with this new avant. Could you please check if we have some choice in selecting the center speaker ? Thanks beosound 5/BM5 , beosystème 4500 , beolab 1, beolab 3, beolab 7.2, beolab 5000, beolab 14, beolab 3500, beovision 7-40 mkIII , beovision av 9000, IWS 2000, beotime, MLGW

Apart from using an other speaker as center, it does make sense to me to disable the built-in speaker. In situations where you want to listen to music, only through the external front and surround speaker, for example.
It seems only logical to me that the speakers should retract when not being used by the current 'sound profile'.Not sure if B&O thought of this. Maybe someone here knows, or can try this out?
Related: what happens when the picture mute is on and the speaker is not being used? I'd want it to retract, but I guess it won't...
Beolit 12 - Beolab 4 pc (dead now) - Beoplay H5 - Beolab 9 - BeoRemote One BT - Beoplay M3
No they don't retract when not in use. You can obviously choose your different speaker groups for playing back music etc. I have had my Avant now for two days. I am currently switching to my 8000’s for music in favor of the built in speakers - and the built in speakers do not retract. They only retract in standby mode.
Adding a separate center speaker will be a bit odd I imagine and difficult to achieve if you intend to use the moving stand.
Yeah I agree. I would think it would be a simple software update to make it disappear when not in use.
Michael:Why would you do this? The beolab 7-series are -fat- and the tv is not. It would look very strange.. And the speakers that are built in are very good. Using a 7-2 makes no sense at all - they don't even have a center channel. Sure you can connect a center and use that instead if you really need to but it feels like putting a plastic pool beside the ocean.

Michael: • The interface is a little blurry so I think it is 1920x1080 and not 4K native (odd!)• Tried 4K over HDMI from my MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2013) and in that resolution the Beovision interface is not visible(!) as someone said before. I think it feels a bit odd that the TV seems to work in 1920x1080 mode and not 4K. Since the interface/gui is not available/visible in 4K (as of now at least) it makes it impossible to easily adjust settings or choose a source from the screen menu etc. I don't like this. I used the remote to change between picture modes and I think it did show a second of feedback but without the source (4K) shown at the same time. It looks like it does picture enhancement on 4K sources but I am not sure yet. Perhaps B&O need more time to make a GUI in 4K but I find it hard to believe. It might just be that the tv is not designed to work in "true" 4K "all the way". I want to find out more about this since it is very relevant. When using a connected Mac for movie playback of 4K or any other 4K source I want to be able to use the Beovision menu, see the volume, set sleep timer, watch the clock etc. Overlay on 4K sources is a necessity. This is the interface we are familiar with on these TV´s so it should follow through always!

Hmm, having read this, I can't stop thinking they have pushed out this tv too soon.
I completely agree that it is simply ridiculous how it is not able to show the interface with a 4K source. I mean, how hard can it be? (Speaking as a computer scientist, I know a thing or two about software.) I sincerely hope a software update will be 'enough' to overcome this, but I fear the worst.
I suppose 4K is currently being processed by a completely different engine and there's no way of joining a 1920*1080 GUI with a 4K signal. In that view, the 4K stuff is probably not part of the core engine. (and then maybe there isn't picture enhancement on 4K signals. Or if there is, it could be separate from the 'regular fullHD' engine.)
I suspect the core system to be only full HD, and it handles everything (more or less) like the BV11 would. Then, the signal which would be sent to the panel on a BV11 is delivered to the 4K engine, which upscales and sends it to the panel. A 4K source is directly lead to the 4K engine (as the core can't handle it) and displayed on the panel. This would explain why there is no GUI on 4K signals, those signals just don't pass through the core engine. I can't see any other explanation to why there is no interface on 4K signals.
I fear though, if this is how the avant currently works, that a simple software update can not change this architecture. The answer to 'how hard can it be?' would be 'it's impossible'.
I'd love to be proven wrong, I really do! I hope I'm completely wrong on this matter. I don't understand why anyone would build a system like this. The only explanation would be that it is immensely cheaper to take an existing system and to simply add 4K capabilities in this manner, than to completely rebuild the system from the ground up in 4K. Unfortunately, I have seen enough projects where this approach has been taken.

I have to answer quickly due to my vacation starting tomorrow and I have yet been able to pack a single shirt! I tried 4K from my macbook pro and it can only output maximum 30hz (according to apple). I first put the tv in the picture mode "Monitor" which disables all picture adjustments to show a neutral picture (like a computer screen). Then I watched som 4K material. I tried changing picture mode to adaptive or what it is called (number 1) in blind via the remote (hate not having the gui!) and it all went smooth then, so it seems it is doing something actually. One thing I´ve noticed is that my Avant gets REALLY hot inside on the back side where the ports are. Like burning hot. I wonder if this might affect lifetime of the tv. On iMacs you often see how the picture is "burned" where the hot parts are.

Well, when I heard the avant, the center channel was the problem for me. The bl7.2 would give me a wider image from the center. This sound coming directly from this bad looking grill chocked me. Not bad at all but it sound like it lacks the volume of the 7.2 and too much directiv. On a wall mount under the avant, it won't be so ugly. I do prefer something more ugly but more efficient, that's a choice. Of course this is only possible if the avant is wall mounted.

You need to watch this video so you understand the need for a real center. Perhaps it can be changed to 2.0 also. I have to check after my vacation.I think the Beolab 7-series is to deep for the avant, but if you don't mind then you don't
olvisab:The use of a bl7.2 stereo doesn't mean I don't have a real center in a 5.1 setup or speaker 3 set up.

Raeuber:This is exactly what I assumed after reading specs and manual of the new Avant. The Beosystem 4 is a full HD but not a 4K engine, so there must be an extra 4K engine on top. In that case it's obvious that there is no - and there will never be - GUI on 4K. I would say the Avant has a Beosystem 4+ engine, but not a Beosystem 5. As I already mentioned in another post the new Avant is only a slight beginning in 4K era! Regards Räuber
Michael:I answered this but I want to add that there is motion optimization happening on 4k In the adaptive video mode. And not on monitor mode - so the tv can process the signal at least in some way. I think B&O should have hold off 4K if they have made a "sloppy" solution instead of a real one. Full-HD looks nice and 4K looks nicer. Not having the interface is very strange. Anyone know how other 4K tvs behave?
Raeuber:Ok Michael, but there are still some other questions regarding 4K engine of Avant: - Why B&O recommend only using HDMI 1 socket for 4K sources? - Why you can't watch 4K videos in 3D? Räuber

Yes, I think it might be as you and crossbytje say also that there might be two different engines doing not exactly the same thing. I don't know really. I emailed beocare (because I also want to know how to properly attach an Apple TV, I cant find a dedicated slot for it or a hdd). Probably the space between the connectors but I want it to be "airy".I just went to my retailer to pay the rest of the TV (I just paid a deposit on ordering it) and I got a big box of fresh chocholate from a store in the same town. How nice! I´m on a train now so pictures will follow before I eat it all - I kind of promise .
Michael:I have to answer quickly due to my vacation starting tomorrow and I have yet been able to pack a single shirt! I tried 4K from my macbook pro and it can only output maximum 30hz (according to apple)
As far as I know, this is a limitation of HDMI 1.4. HDMI 2.0 should allow frequencies of at least 60Hz.
I know that a lot of people are talking about 4K but I have found that there are a lot of other, more immediate things to be worried about. I have had my Avant for two days now and I have run into a number of issues. My B&O dealership are already ordering me a replacement.
1. The Motorised Stand. When the technician installed my Avant, the movement of the stand was absolutely silently. We both commented on how amazingly quiet it was. But later that evening it seemed to get louder and sound more laboured in its movement. It has continued to be loud and laboured in its movement. The technician returned today and confirmed that the sound from the motors had indeed changed. It sounds like it is whining more.
2. The Motorised Speakers. Just like the stand, when the Avant was installed, the movement of the speakers were smooth and silent. But later the same day again, when the speakers moved down from the body of the TV they made a slight grinding noise. Obviously this is not want you want to hear! But it got worse. When the speakers then moved out to the sides, they then made a LOUD BANGING SOUND. Needless to say I nearly had a heart attack! It sounded like they were caught on something. I tried turning it off but whether I turned it on or off, it would make this horrible loud noise. I rang my dealership and they confirmed that B&O were aware of this problem and it "may" have something to do with the back removable panels on the TV or the speaker frets.
3. The Screen. When the Avant was being installed I noticed some smudges around the screen. But when I went to clean them off later, I found that these smudges were BENEATH THE SCREEN. The more I looked, the more I found. They are like residue - smears and spatters between the panels of glass. They are very obvious and big. I've included some photos below for you to see how bad it is.
4. Performance. While the picture and sound looks and sounds great for the most part I found major problems with movement on 1080p sources. I played a few blurays and found that most horizontal movement of people of objects left ghosting and judder. In fact in some cases where people were running, I found that the actual area around the movement seemed to break up. It looked almost like a corrupt file but localised on the movement. I tried multiple films on Bluray - Avatar, Star Trek and The Hobbit and found it the same on all of them. This does not happen on my 7 year old Panasonic! I tried every setting on the TV to fix the issue but nothing worked. The only thing that seemed to lessen it slightly is ironically turning the "anti judder function" OFF. But this only lessened it slightly, the problem was still there. I fear that this may be a wider problem as I had noticed it along with my B&O dealer on his Avant in the store weeks ago. He assured me that B&O would be sure to address this very obvious picture issue, but alas here it is again. Anyone out there with an Avant, please take a look at some 1080p content, particularly bluray and pay particular attention to fast movement of people or objects.
Another issue I've had every now and again is with the room adaptation function. I know this is supposed to gradually change the brightness and colour balance of your image so you don't notice it BUT I found at times I would notice it jumping darker or lighter mid scene. There was nothing gradual about it at all. I didn't find this all the time but I have since turned this function off.
So needless to say I am a disappointed particularly since this is my first B&O product. I do really hope B&O address these issues and I really hope they haven't released this TV before it is really ready.
Here are those images of the smears and spatters beneath the glass of the screen. Note that the actual surface is completely clean. All those marks are below the surface.

Sadly this is not unique to the Avant. My BV11 has smears under the glass in a couple of places. You only see it if a) there's sun shining on the screen and b) you look closely. ie. you go looking. In normal every day use, you don't see them.
Clearly they come from the manual hand-construction of the TV. When my BV10 had to have the panel removed, I noticed the next day there was a coat of dust on the inside of the panel, after it had been replaced! Incredible.

Again, this isn't an Avant issue, it's been discussed widely on here a few times. This also happens on the BV11. When dusk is coming, and the room is darker than normal, the light adaption doesn't work properly and it's constantly changing the panel lighting. You can see it physically adapting (by a few shades), every few seconds! I find this particularly irritating when watching sport.
I'm not saying these should happen or there's any excuse for them, but these two issues have been around for years - both have been present on my BV11 since 2012!
Wow that doesn't look good at all, and that's something i wouldn't have expected. I hope you get it sorted out soon for the price i would be expecting perfection.

Chris Townsend: Never buy the Mk1 of anything.
I got an extended warranty to five years from B&O. Remind me again which MK you have on your tv? (or nevermind I saw MK2 now :) but someone has to be the early adopter - and it is fun - while it is disappointing to find flaws. Being part of development is something I enjoy, especially if they can fix it.

Me too! For the price I would expect the quality to be far above everything else - not worse!
Anyway, I won't be settling for this one. They are ordering a replacement at the moment. I just hope they sort out any issues in the factory before they send that one!
I'd love to hear anyone else's observations of the Avants picture performance with Bluray - particularly with the movement issues I've noticed on two Avants so far.

If I where you I would ask them to wait! Perhaps they need new directions for the factory floor on how to assemble and how to maintain the glass from dust and smear. Etc. If mine has to be replaced I will wait perhaps a year or at least half a year if nothing serious happens to it. (which of course yours seems to do). I noticed that the back panels can be moved a little and that the one where the bass is vibrates if the music is loud (can easily be fixed with some soft materia inbetween).
moxxey:Clearly they come from the manual hand-construction of the TV.
Not acceptable on any new product, let alone something costing £6K. I can't believe they aren't made to were gloves when handling any polished surface, nevermind the glass or panel - even then, to get past end of line inspection is inexcusable.
I've seen cheap kitchen appliances rejected at end of line by Chinese appliance manufacturers for much less.
Ban boring signatures!
Hi solidsnake good to hear that your getting a replacement, can I ask what settings you have on your bluray player??
ignore this if you have already done the following. Set the resolution on the bluray player to 1080p 24hz and picture format to 16:9. On your avant does it have a screen fit or an unscaled option which provides a picture without overscan?
Also if your able to switch off the noise reduction I would turn it off, hd sources don't require noise reduction as it does more harm than good to the picture. I would also suggest that if the sharpness is set to high to reduce it as that can add ringing which will effect the picture quality.
i do find that B&O set there sharpness a bit to high. Give what I said a try and see what results you get if you have already done following please ignore my post.
Even apple mess up , I bought a Mac Pro mk 1 in 2007 , they managed to wire the Bluetooth and the wifi internal cables the wrong way round....
Regarding solidsnake's problems , they're pretty outrageous tbh . Send it back and get a bv 11.

BeoGreg:Dead pixel, noisy stand and speakers, dust and smudges under screen, no menu on coming 4k viewing, heated back with vibrations, instable picture, visible colored leds on the back... Two first Avant summary ! It´s really not a surprise for the B & O fans but it´s still hard to believe for the most expensive 55" non danish led television. One more observation : I showed my wife a picture of Michael Avant I liked (Eddy Murphy on screen) saying the tv looks are growing on me. Answer of Madame : what's that huge cable on the back ? She's right, there is really no way to hide the cables inside the stand like the BV11 stand ?
Does the sock come with the tv?
markiedee: Does the sock come with the tv?
With the stand, its much better than the one I got with my V1. This one is a "wrap" so you can put in cables by pushing them into it. You dont have to pull them all the way trough.

Remember the photos of the three Avants from the B&O unveiling? Did anyone notice that the cable / socks were standing straight up from the back of the stand? At the time, I figured this was B&O's pretty nifty solution to dealing with a visible cable sock behind the television -- to push it to the edge of the base and "down the wall"... (See image below)

I would imagine that this would be something relatively easy for B&O or a Beoworlder / tinkerer to fabricate, a PVC / metal pipe which extends up, with a sock around it. Good luck to everyone who purchased the Avant and are having issues. You're all still in the presence of a fabulous product that most of us don't have. Hopefully B&O can sort out all of the initial issues.

It really saddens me to hear about the various issues people are having with the Avant – build quality issues for both the TV and the floor stand, and software shortcomings such as menu overlays (GUI) not working with UHD pictures. Hopefully the latter will be fixed in a future software update when the 4K features of the Avant are updated to their full glory as B&O has stated.
The build quality issues leave me speechless, however.
I have not ordered my Avant yet: I have the issue of getting my BV11 out of the way, and I also promised myself to wait for user comments (which are now coming in...) and maybe some thorough reviews of the Avant before upgrading.
Now it seems I might have been lucky in NOT ordering one yet.
I definitely want to be sure that the issues mentioned in this thread are fixed by B&O before I'll part with my BV11. Also, I'd like to know more of the 4K implementation in Avant, and what exactly software updates can do to improve it. Now there's too much speculation and some obvious shortcomings – even if I were to use Avant only with Mac Pro as the 4K source for the foreseeable future. I don't want to find myself in a situation where Avant MkII with "true 4K video engine" comes out in a year from now and I need to upgrade my TV again. I want a 4K set that is as future-proof as it can be, which in my case means a TV for about 2-3 years. Then I'll upgrade again anyway.
So I'm putting Avant on hold for a while, wait for more information and experiences to emerge, and hope everyone has their issues with the TV sorted out quickly and easily.

markiedee: Hi solidsnake good to hear that your getting a replacement, can I ask what settings you have on your bluray player?? ignore this if you have already done the following.
Thanks markiedee, I had the Bluray at 1080p 24hz 16:9.
On the Avant though there isn't an unscaled option that I could find. I found a cropping/overscan setting which I turned down to 0. I also hadn't turned down the noise reduction or sharpness. With these changes as well as the judder cancel off and the room adaptation off I noticed a VERY noticeable improvement in motion.
Thanks so much. If you have any other ideal tips for great B&O picture settings do let me know.
I'm glad to have been able to help.
