Hi,
After three years searching, I've finally found a nice pair of Beovox 5000 speakers to match my Beolab 5000/Beomaster 5000 setup.
Here they are:
The cubes were ludicrously expensive, but another pair might come up pretty soon...
What to expect from these speakers then? Will I need to do anything other than enjoying them ?
Jacques
Nice to have got a pair at last. Looking forward to your opinion on the sound of the 5000s.
Yes, that's nice.
Have you got a pair yourself?
Congrats Jacques, you won the bid from Ebay France?
Thought a pair of cubes was included?

Leslie: Congrats Jacques, you won the bid from Ebay France? Thought a pair of cubes was included?
No, they were a separate bid, and they went very very high. I've got another opportunity though (local ads) for much, much less outlay!
What do you do on those leslie?
I could have sworn that the cubes were included, cause I did a bid myself. In this case I'm not that dissapointed I lost the auction. I'm still wondering how he would have shipped these giants to the Netherlands for just 45 euro as mentioned in his ad.
Not sure what you mean by "What do you do on those"?
The BV5000 looks fantastic.
there is a pair right now on german ebay with 3hrs left - seems to be for repair though.
best rgds,

Ifthey have not already had the cross overs looked at and old capacitors replaced, i would suggest this would be a good idea. I have Mk3s (yours arev Mk 2s) and I should really do mine. I confess to never using them - too big and just not as good in my view as some of my other speakers.

The 45€ were for the cubes mate! You got confused because they were presented on top of the Beovoxes!
Not confused mate, checked the shipping costs and they were 45 euro for shipping to Pays-Bas.
Here, local pick up only. Well well.
I mean, do you change anything, like capacitors, foam gaskets?
Probably have been looking at the cubes.
Just caps..
Do you use à Dillen kit?
Depends how fast I wanna have it. Most of the cases for filterboards I choose Martins bipolar caps because of the colored workinstruction included. Regular ones from a local store.
My new goal: finding a nice pair of cubes...
I almost grabbed one but was too late.
chartz: Have you got a pair yourself?
I have a pair waiting on collection but that's a while away yet.
Good luck on the 2500s

Congratulation! Very nice pair.
It is coincidental but same as valve1, I am also waiting for collection of one nice pair, unfortunately without the stands / feets
I am very impatient to get them (have to wait few days) but I would be very glad to hear your first impressions.I never heard them live.
Do they sound good for you?
Vintage Bang & Olufsen
the_o_master: Do they sound good for you?
Promise, I'll tell you as soon as the xovers are finished!
My Beovox 5000 speakers will be here in 10 days.
But the good news is, I've finally found a pair of very nice cubes! They cost me 150€.
I am one happy camper I guess...
Now I wonder about that Thorens Beogram 3000.

Nothing wrong with being ambitious

I guess the Beogram 4000 and its MMC20CL will do until I find one.

Not only have I found the Cubes, but the Beovoxes are at home, finally!
More to come...

Congratulations! I'm eager to see some pictures!

Veneer in excellent condition. Nice to behold! Serials 39539, 39542.
They belonged to an elderly B&O dealer, so these were cherished and no wax or varnish was applied to the palisander veneer, which is good because I won't have to get rid of years of grime and stuck dust. The wood surface is almost perfect.
Okay, DIN plugs cleaned. Grilles vacuumed.
Beovoxes plugged to the Beolab. Speakers well into the room, one and a half metres off the back wall.
First impressions, not too good. Ms Bush's The Kick Inside, a bright CD. A very muffled sound, very little treble, especially with grilles on, almost no bass to speak of. All drivers work.
Well well well.

Thats half the battle !
I am sure you will get the speakers up and running in no time.
The speaker is big indeed!
Very sturdy legs, I guess they are screwed from inside the cabinet.
Look at the beautiful veneer...

Yes, but what can I do to get them to sound good, or as they should?
I've tested different frequencies and they appear to give satisfying level up to around 15 kHz (I can't hear anything above anyway).
They look beautiful!
I just listened to The kick inside on my 1500's driven by a beomaster 900 and it sounds pretty good in my opinion. Have you thought of the adjustment knobs on the back? New dampening material and a recap can make a huge difference!
I'll replace the capacitors, but as usual I don't expect much from that. I must say I've often been disappointed after a capacitor change. The last one being the M70s which did not improve a bit with the new caps.
Don't expect to much of those 5000's even after recapping. It's nice to have your collectible 5000 as a complete set but the sound? Hmmm, it's vintage right?
I experienced the same dissapointments after recapping speakers.
Having heard Frede's , they can sound extremely good. Obviously they are favoured by a beautiful setting and the warmth of a wonderful host and hostess, but I was truly impressed.

Were they placed against the back wall?
See the hammer's mark Who was the bloke who signed the tags?
I probably have a picture somewhere - if not Lee does. The speakers are in a special listening room and he has 4 cubes including two suspended from the ceiling. The cubes add to the sound stage massively - if you play them alone, you really can hardly hear any output but added to another full range speaker and positioned well, they are really quite impressive.
I can't wait to fetch mine then - they will be here in early September, I will have the new caps installed then.
We'll see!
I should however point out that I don't use my 5000s! I think they probably need new caps but they are simply not up to my BBC LS3/5As and AB1s!
Hi Jacques,
my Frede restored Beovox 5000's and cubes are against a wall as you can see in my avatar. I think it sounds beautiful as do any visitors - mellow and warm, no distortion and a nice stereo spread.
At the bottopm of the feet is a plastic insert which comes out. I may be mis-remembering but I think there is a screw or bolt that goes in there and into the bottom of the cabinet. I'll tip mine over and have a look.
Dave.
Hi Dave,
Do the cubes make a lot of difference? Could you unplug yours and tell the difference in sound quality without them?
Thanks!
Personally I think they do. It is quite subtle and if you actually put your ear close to the cubes you don't hear a lot volume wise but there is a clarity of the higher frequencies. I think it makes the music sound more clear and balanced - less muddy or bass heavy. They also look very cool on top of the Beovox 5000's too.
I like the sound of my set-up as it is so haven't really played about with the settings or the variable switches on the back of the Beovoxes.
Now you've asked the question, I'm going to have a play around tomorrow as I've got some spare time.
You've also got the stereo width box haven't you? That's also effective thogh my Beovoxes are relatively close together so it's hard to assess. The centre speaker is also quite subtle but noticable.
Hi again Jacques,
I've just had a play around with my cubes and Beovox 5000's. The effect of the cubes is actually much more noticable than I first remembered.
I adjusted the midrange selector on the back of the BV5000's from 1 through to 5. When you're close to the cubes, there appears to be a slight increase in midrange at each step up, which is much more noticable at distance from the main speakers.
I also unplugged the cubes and the effect then immediately becomes apparent. Without them, the sound from the BV5000's is great but quite flat, then once the cubes ar eon, the midrange comes alive. The midrange becomes much more clear and listening to music or voices becomes easier on the ear and less difficult to differentiate as the lower frequencies don't dominate. I always found voices got a bit 'lost' on FM radio but with the cubes it's crystal clear and less difficult to make out what people are actually saying!
I think you'll be pleased. Have you got a centre speaker set-up with the stereo width box yet?
