Yes, both 103 and 105 can be used as pre amps. I don't know much more, but happened to have been looking at this recently as need a new player and interested in possibility of connecting straight to my 18's for music only. No hands on experience though. Sure someone will be along to offer more detail.
Both Oppo 103 and 105 have optical output ... isn't that what one would use for a BL5 ?

Hi, after having a quick look found this, from February this year. Thought it might be of interest.
If you will be using the player as the pre-amplifier, then you will want to use the BDP-105. The BDP-103 has 24-bit DACs and has a low signal to noise floor, so it will likely produce audio truncations if you use the player's built-in volume controls and a hum will always be present as the amplifier will always be amplifying the noise floor.
If you are running through a pre-amplifier, or another device which will be doing the volume controls, then the BDP-103 will work in your configuration.

The BL5s give priority to an S/PDIF signal, over Line signal. Therefore, if they detect an S/PDIF signal, they will use that for processing and that will be your sound source.
If you don't feed them an S/PDIF signal, they will look for other input sources and use those.
You can use that to configure to various sources, with the knowledge that the S/PDIF will always override.
If you will be using multichannel playback, then you might want to use the LINE OUT from the Pre-amps of the OPPOs, for all your speakers. But even here you can let the BL5s be fed by the S/PDIF RCA OUT from the two models of OPPO players, while having your other speakers receive the LINE OUT signal from the Pre-amps.
The fact that the BL5s give priority to an S/PDIF signal is quite neat, as it gives you some options for how to configure your set-up.
I had my BL5s connected to an external sound card for 2-channel music playback, and with the LINE IN from the multichannel source pre-amp for multichannel playback.
When I wanted to listen to music, I would just send a source down to the soundcard, and from there to the speakers, through the S/PDIF connection.
When I wanted to watch multichannel movies, I would just not send a source through to the S/PDIF, and the speakers would join the other surround and rear speakers, for a nice multichannel experience.
If you use the pre-amps from your Oppo, then it's important to configure correctly, so that the Oppo understands that the BL5s will handle the low frequency, LFE portion of the multichannel signal.
Through the years, it's been humorous to follow threads here from people who are dissatisfied with the BL5 bass performance - the speakers are capable of moving a LOT OF AIR with their subwoofers, and it's often turned out that the set-up was configured wrongly, and that the subwoofer wasn't receiving much of a signal to go with, as the LFE was sent to non-existent external subwoofers.
Cheers.

BL5 have coax in and out, rather than optical, but otherwise yes.

And both the 103 and 105 have coax OUT, no?

Probably, was just answering the question relating to what's on the BL5s themselves. There is a simple converter you can buy even if your equipment only has optical out.
Quick look on the Oppo website gives this, it's the same for 103 and 105
