The BLC is more sexy than the Essence ! Beautiful metal (and heavier) compared to Essence "plastic".

Seems a pity to consign it to a cupboard ...

Simply because the Essence is wifi, so this big aluminum plate is not good for wireless antennas. There is not such a problem with the converter as it doesn't have any kind of wireless antenna.

Doesn't work as an excuse for cheap design for max profit, you have phones like the iPhone and iPod's that work fine in metal. Even my macbook pro work. The idea! Smile You only have to design antennabands or cut outs. You can even have the base in plastic for antennas. Just use a good designer instead of a generic white plastic box that could be your door bell.

Completely agree with Martin Yes - thumbs up

Bang & Olufsen have no excuse.

The BeoSound Essence box is so ugly and cheap for the high price ( 675.-€ ) ! No - thumbs down

What saddened me is that here we have three products from the same time frame that are all needed for an installation like mine.

One looks like it is a eBay electronic kit item.

One luxury item (boxed and not aligned design wise with its host).

One is bland.

One is B&O.

All three packages were different inside - two types of foam, rubber, and bubble wrap.

Even the manuals were wrapped (or not!) in two types of film or plastic.

And the two important manuals vary in design approach.

Only the three outside brown boxes made it all obviously B&O -- the rest shows the use of different off-shore sources -- or different design teams -- or a lack of design / brand ethos.

Sad after decades of products that proudly came from the same stable.

I agree. Times are over when B&O audio devices were design icons in your living room. Nowadays you have to hide them in a cabinet. Very sad in my opinion and not much fun to buy B&O anymore!

But I have to admit it's not easy to create great design with an audio device, because they don't need moving parts anymore like CDs. Look at this ugly tablet on a brick called 'Moment'.

For me the design icon in my living room is my BL18s. They always get positive comments when people visit. As does my BS5.

Also the box and manuals for the Moment looks really cheap. I remember the good looking manuals that come together with the MX televisions and the old Beosounds, they were inspiring.

Back to assembling the unpacked items

Batteries into the remote !

Easy-peasy except reassembling four black lugs into four black holes with limited visibility was not good with my fading eyesight

But I was impressed with quality of build and the ease of the decoupling design - just recoupling that was an alignment challenge

The quandaries Sad

Proper Planning Prevents P1S5 Poor Performance

I had deliberately not pre-ordered cables until I had shaken down the installation and settled on a configuration

However quandary 1 is I can't find an old switch/router for the BLC subnet - I have at least two maybe three but only found an ADSL router which may create issues

Quandary 2 is that I had forgotten the new FOXTEL had consumed the last spare port on the main router

Quandary 3 is where is that spare ML cable ? (At least the ML junction box has a spare port)

Quandary 4 is where is the IR unit that I know I ordered Angry (I have several spares from BeoPorts and Wireless 1s but are they all the same !)

Quandary 5 is where to plug the speakers ? BLC or Essence ? What will the different behaviours be ? Will it affect sound quality ? Will it introduce delays Sad

Essence up and playing Smile

Some adventures along the way though

EDIT:

> I thought I may have had a "dead on arrival" remote. I have tried three sets of AAA batteries: those supplied and set of spares and the "pair" light doesn't even flicker.

But I kept trying different pairs until I noticed a flicker of green light on the remote. From there it only took two attempts to get proper pairing. And it worked.

So I then reverted to the original as supplied batteries. They work too.

So it was just the intricacies of pairing and expecting remote's light to be bright ! Embarrassed

> instructions refer to "page 4" when they mean "cell 4 of the info graphic on page 5"

Anyway music is sweet ... now on my son's Spotify

Following purchase of CAT6e cables and a NetGear switch I now have the Essence hardwired and it works although iTunes AirPort streaming now has an old ghost definition and the new definition.

Just finished connect the BLC to ML and NL to the switch that connects to the Essence and the outside world.

And now the BLC is ready to configure -- but that can wait until tomorrow -- I hope !

And it mysteriously pulsates straight out of the box! I'm afraid that the aesthetics of the design do nothing for me.... it doesn't look like a high quality design or finish.

Design is a question of taste.

But quality is here. The chassis is made of aluminium and finish is perfect. The sound is amazing for the size.

If you have a dealer near you go to see and hear it before to judge the product. Wink

Well it is still work in progress !

This morning I wired it in and started getting my head around its configuration settings and what they mean. Before the Essence, my first NL product, neither set BeoSetup or BeoMusic worked - not even with blank menus so I have had a steep learning curve. And so I am still experimenting....

Here is what I have currently set, followed by our granddaughter listening / dreaming to TuneIn Smile

One thing that puzzles me is that a V1 shows up in a couple of menus for being linked to even though we don't have one !

And in another place as you can see in the previous post we get this string 9503.1856103.23861637@products.bang-olufsen.com

Where 9503 is the product code for a V1 and I presume the rest is some form of part and serial number configuration.

I don't know if this a remnant from development / testing the BLC NL/ML or whether there is a spurious signal on the network (Philippe's LinkPlayer running behind my BeoPort ?)

PS Spotify Connect proven to work.
