On the occasions when you get a picture, can you get into the service menu to check whether any errors are listed?

This was my initial thought too - it sounds like an HDMI / HDCP handshake issue, usually caused by a faulty (or excessively long) HDMI cable, but the mention of the problem occurring on multiple sources is a puzzle.
Definitely worth ruling out a cable problem though, and maybe also try connecting only one source at a time in case it is related to one faulty external device.
