Wood is a funny thing. No two trees of the same species are the same when you harvest the wood. Different colours, figure, density for example. Rosewood safe mostly protected now and can be difficult to obtain or are subject to CITES regulations, import bans etc. It is actually now illegal to trade true Rio rosewood (Dalbergia Nigra). It is a 'vulnerable species' and threatened by illegal logging in Brazil. This can be red through to brown in a variety of shades.

The Indian Rosewood (Dalbergia Sissoo) is also found in S. America as well as Asia. It is an excellent veneer wood. It can be much lighter and variable in colour, especially the sapwood which can be white. The heartwood is a golden brown rather than the more reddish colour of the D. Nigra.

You will need to buy whatever you can find. Veneer sellers show the actual veneer on offer - often moistened with ethanol to show the final colour after polishing or oiling.

Search for 'Rio rosewood veneer' on eBay.uk or for seller 'woodworker63'. He has some at the moment. Getting a piece the length you need may be the challenge.

I may have some in my workshop.

Dave.

Can you send me the dimensions that you need as I have to build in some excess.  i.e. length and width of pieces needed.  I have a ton of veneers but I'm not sure if I have any Rosewood.  I haven't looked for ages.  The pieces my be too small also which is why I suggested the seller earlier.

Are you used to handling veneers?

Dave.

Hi Shaun,

I checked in the workshop today and I have no Rosewood of any type!  A bit remiss of me as I will also need one at some stage.  Sorry.  I do have some fantastic veneers with gorgeous figure and colour but it would make a unique B&O piece!

I'd try the bay seller I mentioned earlier - he has the Rosewood you want and good feedback too.  You can still find it.  It just takes some hard searching.

If I can help in any way, just ask.

Dave.
