Is it what is to be expected when playing a phonograph record on a Beomaster 4500 that the volume needs to be set considerably higher ‘vs. a CD, 72 for the record and 55 for the CD to achieve the same level of volume?
The Beomaster 4500 does not come with a RIAA phono pre-amp, so I have an external one. I am sure it doesn’t matter but I am using a Beogram 8002 with this Beomaster 4500.

MMC cartridges have a slightly lower output level than the usual MM cartridges from other manufacturers. B&O's kit obviously knows this and is designed accordingly. Since you're using a 3rd party RIAA preamp, I doesn't compensate for this. Your options are to get a preamp with adjustable gain, or just forget about the problem.

The gain of your RIAA pre amp is designed for "normal" moving magnet cartridges. However the MMC range from B&O have an output at around 60% of "normal" and hence you need to increase the volume on your Beomaster to compensate.
This is quite normal unless, like me, you have an RIAA pre amp with increased output such as the TC770LC from www.phonopreamps.com
***edit*** Damn, you beat me to the post!!!

Thank you Graham, Your information was most informative and helpful!
I just ordered the TC770LC you recommended.
Hi Graham,
I just received the new pre-amp you recommended and it did EXACTLY what it is supposed to do, as you said it would.
Suffice to say I am delighted at the difference and the need to turn down the volume when switching to CD or tape no longer necessary.
Thank you so very much!
Another satisfied customer!
Thanks Jeff
I am entirely so, and thank you very much!
