Hi Guys,

The BG4000 adjustment saga continues....

I have followed beolovers advice regarding aligning the platter and chasis but I have hit a snag...

I have adjusted the platter height and tilt to get it to the correct 23mm from the top of the detector arm to the platter in all directions. The platter seems to run true and spins perfectly. I then adjusted the suspension springs to get the platter to line up flush with the top plate... the issue I have is the front spring is much less "bouncy" than the rest... any thoughts?

Secondly... if I drive the tonearm all the way to the centre using the fast transport function it continues too far and becomes stuck... the motor tries to reverse it but it can't without help. If I stop it just before the very end it returns as normal. Is there an end stop adjustment?

Thanks.

Welcome to more fun in adjusting the Beogram 4000. Smile
It is a wonderful turntable and I really enjoy mine but it does take some patience and effort to get things adjusted. All of the Beogram 400x series can be fun to adjust the suspension if it is a little off. What I sometimes end up doing is taking all three leaf springs off and putting them back on carefully where I try to keep them all equal as I tighten the adjustment bolts. That process is pretty tedious though. Beolover has a nice thread on those adjustments which it sounds like you have already looked at.

On your second issue, I have experienced that as well. For some reason the fast forward  (and slow forward) engage button causes the end stop switch signal to be ignored. The result is the tonearm assembly reaches the power supply board and lifts up a bit. That keeps it from returning without some help. I was able to adjust mine where the tonearm assembly doesn't lift up too high to be able to reverse it.  I'll take another shot and going through the control logic to see how the fast forward/slow forward signals affect the end stop switch signal.

At home the front is less bouncy too.

However, I could never get the platter to be aligned to the top-plate - ie flush - with the suspension properly aligned and floating.

If I rise the suspension so that the platter is flush with the top plate, then there is no more bounce. I could cheat and rise the bearing a bit, but then of course the cartridge relative to disc height will be wrong.

I think there is no solution. And believe me, I've spent hours trying to adjust it perfectly, as per SM. To no avail.

Hi Jaques,

After discussing this with beolover he suggests making the detector arm perfectly level with the chasis first by raising and lowering the rails on which the arms travel. Once the arms are correct you then make the platter height correct and level with the chasis. Only then can you adjust the springs to get the whole lot aligned properly. Sounds like a mountain of work and I have decided to save up some cash to have it done professionally... it would drive me up the wall and I'll never be satisfied I have done it correctly.

Hi Lee,

I get that, but I've already got the factory spacers fitted under the guides, and there's not much I can do about it because the arm back cover travels about a millimeter under the alu black part of the lid.

Hi Jaques,

What are the factory spacers?

Little metal parts that rise the guiding rails at both ends so that the arm can be at the correct height. Undocumented in the service manual but there nonetheless.

Ah I see. Mine seems to have screws that can be adjusted from the underside of the floating chassis to change the height of the rails.

Towards the lower section of this Beogram 400x page I showed making my adjustments for the suspension. There is a picture there of the set screw when I was leveling the tonearm transport rails.
