I have been trying to upgrade Beomaster HD to SSD for quite long time. Funny thing is I can clone my original (1TB) drive to another 3.5 inch without any problems, but could not succeed cloning to Samsung  EVO and Pro. After start would get booth error etc.

There have been write-ups about this, basically most posts said - it cannot be done. Some guys recommended Crucial SSD ......... saying this is the only drive could work.

I have contacted Samsung and was told that the issue is with cloning software, cloning software guys said - Samsung drive is at fault. I have tried few cloning software including Acronis, Aomei, Macrium Reflect, Drive Clone etc. all attempts failed.

Reading one of the forums someone recommend EaseUS Todo Backup Free ... and to my surprise cloning worked - I have cloned original drive to Samsung EVO 1Tb (sector by sector - there are two options in the software , do not remember exactly what the second is - if you try select both) - and for the last 3 days everything is working as a charm.

If someone would want to try, please let me/us know if I am just being lucky or the issue is with cloning software. I will monitor and let you know if my luck will continues.

Regards

I have bought a Crucial MX100 512GB SSD and a Deleycon Cloner today.

They should arrive by Friday and then hopefully I can clone the original B&O HDD to the SSD.

All I want is for it to even boot up once and then I will "Start Recovery Process" straight away. This will resolve and clear any restart/booting issues.

Will update you by the end of the week :)

Hi

Thanks for this I can see it now.

Unfortunately, I do not have the Beomaster Service Tool on USB. I did not receive this with my Beomaster/Beosound 5.

I will be using the Deleycon Cloner to clone the original HDD to the new SSD.

Should the Service Tool USB have come with the Beomaster/Beomaster 5?

I have just told my dealer that I should have received the Beomaster Maintenance Tool on a copywrite protected USB.

Will update you on what he says.

Hi

Good luck with your project. What I know only crucial MX100 drive worked for few, so please let me know the outcome.

The tool is available (or should be) through B&O distributors but I had no luck to put my hands on one ..

Best regards

Hi

I have tried crucial MX300 1050GB with Sharkoon QuickPort XT Duo Clone and my original HDD 1TB. Cloning will not start. Maybe the SSD needs to be formatted in some way. What format do you propose? I have tried Fat32 - no start. But with that, the SDD shows 986 GB wich is less then the HDD.

Maybe it now doesn't start because the SSD is too small??

Every hint is most welcome!

I don't own a Beomaster 5 but I do know a few things about storage devices so maybe I can help.

If you are cloning the drive sector-by-sector there is no need to format it in advance, this is because the filesystem (which is what formatting creates) will be copied over too.  There issues with cloning the drive this way, for example if the original drive was 500GB and the new one is 1TB, you may still be limited to 500TB usable space (because the original filesystem was only 500GB in size).

It is more likely that the cloner is unable (or refusing) to copy because the drives are of a different capacity.  Other things that could be coming into play include block size (the HDD was almost certainly 512K, the SSD is probably 8K).  Many older devices have problems with drives that report > 512K block size.  The Beomaster could be such as device.

I have tried many different cloning software, the best result  from EaseUS - the drive worked for few days.

The problem must be in the drive Samsung 256G or 1TB for sure will fail, even doing restore. Reading in the forums, some say that only Crucial MX100 500G works with B&O BM5 - I do not have one and do not want to spend few hundreds to try.

My problem is that my BM5 gets sluggish after while, this can be fix by going to Windows and defragmenting the files, but  is troublesome.

Someone downloaded the Crucial system scanner and ran this on the BM5 which advised to use the MX100 only.

👍🏻👍🏻

Is there any company or person offering a service wherein a BM5 is sent in and it's drive copied and verified to operate properly with a 500mb SSD drive? And maybe offering installation of an updated anti-virus program, along with chrome or Mozilla?

Makes sense. EaseUS cloner has an option to clone "sector by sector" and this is probably why drive lasted working for a while.

Hi Andy

Thank you for the advice. It looks as the problem is getting too serious for my knowledge in computers. I will try to get support from a local specialist - as you mentioned it has not much to do with B&O, but Windows XP.

I put the SSD in last night and it booted up perfectly first time.

I selected NAS as music and played while it was gathering the rest of the music.

Today, when I press N.Music, it just keeps rebooting every time I press N.Music (it reboots perfect every time).

So I changed the music back to internal hard drive and everything is working perfect back to normal.

Now I'm wondering if it is because I don't have Twonky on my NAS?

I have a Seagate NAS and I don't think it can do Twonky?

I've done some digging and it seems the Crucial M550 range uses the same 'Marvel 88SS9189' controller chipset as the MX100 so I'm going to see if I can get the M550 1TB SSD drive to work in the BM5.,

I'll update the thread once I've received the drive and had a chance to test it.

Martin.

Hi

Would it be possible for you or anyone else to download Scanner from Crucial website and run it on MB5?

Crucial told me that this is only way to know which drive will work with the system.

Thanks

This has already been done by another forum member, it's where the recommendation of using the Crucial MX100 drive came from as it was the only drive shown to be compatible by the tool.

Hi to all and thanks for the previous recommendations. I honestly think it is a shame that B&O offers no support on the SSD / upgrade issue, considering the price level of the BeoSound/Master 5.

My BeoMaster5 has a Western Digital 1.0 TB HDD. Unfortunately, the biggest size of the SSD Crucial MX100 is 512GB and therefore I cannot use this model as the clone drive should be the same size as the original HDD. I am now contemplating to try to clone to the SSD Crucial MX300 1.0TB, any opinions?

Thanks, Robert

Hi

if you want to try 1GB Crucial I would suggest you invest some time and run their "Tool" on your BM5 and see drive recommendation. Maybe they have updated compatibility list? If it does not work you can always go after them and ask for help.

Of course if you have another use for 1TB in case it fails, why not!

Fully agree, it is shame that B&O  does not want to help many users with an official upgrade path.

Let us know the result

Hi,

thanks for all valuable suggestions. It is very encouraging that the MX300 seems to work despite of the fact that there is a different controller. The only point I do not understand in Ruedi Wilds report is the fact that he formatted the SSD prior to cloning to MX300, as the sector-by-sector cloning process would also copy the format of the source drive.

I have now ordered the deleyCON Dual USB 3.0 Docking Station as a cloning device. I have also ordered a relatively cheap Western Digital WD10EURX HDD 1.0TB (identical to the installed HDD) to create an exact image as a backup should the HDD fail or crash, as long as this exact hardware is still available in the market (this is my main concern). I will then resume "experiments" with the SSD upgrade.

I have also investigated into the capabilities of the Windows XP Embedded package which is used in the BeoMaster 5, the limited functional scope could be the reason that there are so few compatible SSDs.

I will keep you posted in this forum.

best regards, Robert

You will have no problem to clone present drive to 3.5 inch drive. I have done it to Seagate, WD drives even not the same capacity like 1Tb to 500Gb - no issues. Cloning to SSD is a problem.

In all cases I have used free cloning software, no need to buy DelayCon device. WD, Seagate, Hitachi use own "Acronis modified" cloning software, you can download from their websites and clone your present drive.

I had the best results with EaseUS (also free software) as it offers sector by sector cloning, hope tests with Crucial 1Tb SSD will work, if not please try EaseUS cloning software and clone sector by sector.

Someone mentioned that to succeed with SSD we have to do restore function on BM5 2-3 times (time after time), than the software will put all files as they should be - no idea about this, but it would be good to check with MX 300

Regards

Good luck

As the cloner seems to be used unplugged from the PC while cloning, I think the SSD was formated first so the cloner would recognize it and may use it "offline" from the PC.

There seems to be a second cloner to work well:

deleyCON DUAL USB3 Dockingstation

Kiran tested it in this thread on JAN-19-2017

Ruedi Wild used the Sharkoon Quikport XT Duo Clone

I just completed the clone of my 1TB HDD to an identical HDD by using the offline cloning function of the deleyCON DUAL USB3 Dockingstation. I can confirm that the new HDD boots and works flawless. As such, my main concern regarding the risk of a HDD crash (after the many years of daily operation of the BeoMaster 5) is resolved. Next will be an attempt to copy the HDD to a Crucial MX300 1TB SSD. I will post the results here.

best, Robert

Hi to all,

good news first: I completed the clone from the original HDD WD10EURX 1.0TB to the SSD Crucial MX300 1.0TB, using the offline cloning function of the deleyCON DUAL USB3 Dockingstation. The SSD so far works flawless in the BM5. In addition, I have a back-up on the HDD I copied last week, just in case that the SSD will stop working.

Having said this, I have spent (and lost..) a lot of time in trying other options and improvements:

Initially, the clone operation did not finish, after installing the utility "Crucial Storage Executive" and installing the latest firmware 40, the clone passed without problems. Please note that no previous formatting is required, even if there are data and/or partitions on the drive (all will be overwritten, including the format of the source drive and its partitions).

I have initially tried to create a clone by using the utility "Acronis True Image 2015", but the created clone did not work / boot on the BM5.

I have also attempted to align the partitions to the block size of 4096, which is the SSD format but not automatically applied by Windows XP. The alignment, using the utility "AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard" on the cloned SSD passed without problems, but again the SSD subsequently refused to boot properly on the BM5, producing write errors.

I initially also wanted to modify the Registry and stop some functions such as Defrag and Prefetch, but considering the limited functionality of Windows XP embedded I finally decided to leave all entries as they are.

Conclusion: a simple offline clone without any attempts to modify the system seems to be the pragmatic way, at least the BM5 works for now without any movable parts.

Let's see how the system performs and whether there will be any breakdowns (not really I problem, as I can repeat the clone or return to the HDD at any time...)!

Best, Robert
