Hi
I am currently using Beovox s45s as monitors for mixing and producing music. These were basically my living room speakers until last week and i thought i would give them a try and i think they are pretty much amazing for this purpose.
They smoke my focal cms40s.
so anyhow, i will sell th cms40 and will buy a pair for the studio, i was wondering if i shojuld get the s45-2s instead? are these better speakers. Accuracy and flatness are the most important aspects for me. Are there better Beovox speakers out there for this purpose?
i think the fact that the S45s have a sealed cabinet make them expeciially good for mixing. i cant imagine what i would have to spend to get speakers of this quality today.
Also, any thoughts on what is the best position for these speakers. should the tweeter be at ear level?
i also need to buy an amp, I am currently using a Sanyo which seems to be fine. Any recommendations?
any tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
cheers
jack
They will have the same sound signature. Excellent speakers.

They are superb little speakers - I prefer my LS3/5As when used with AB1s but on their own, the S45-2 is very well balanced with a much more extended and accurate bass. You may find the S45 easier to hang on the wall if that is what you want to do.

Thank for the info guys!
I have come across a pair of S80s? has anyone heard these in comparison to the S45s?
The thing I like about the S45s is the low end and transient response is pretty tight. I am not looking for hyped speakers by any means. How do the s80s compare?
Cheers
Jack
I find that my S45's give an outstanding performance and wonderful bass response, wherher used with my BM2000, or currently directly driven by an Olive One.
The S45s and S45.2s are almost identical, the main differences being moulded resin backs (2 or 3 types) on the 45s, and flat ply/ mdf backs on the 45.2s. The 45.2s have a metal trim on both front and rear edges, whereas the 45s have a metal trim just on the front fret surround.
There is little point in switching S45s for S45.2s or vice versa.

Thanks for the info Graham. Have you heard any other uniphase Beovox speakers?
jackerypie: Thanks for the info Graham. Have you heard any other uniphase Beovox speakers?
Yes. For many years I used Beovox 2600's with a BM1200. I would say that the 2600's also had a good performance but it's difficult to say whether they were equal to the S45's. They were much larger though!
I had S80s - not as good as the S45-2s though - the S120s are the closest but I am not a fan of the later tweeters in the later Uni-phase range - always sounded shrill at high volumes to me.
Great, thanks for your opinion. i will probably hang on for the s45s then. what thoughts do you have on the best amp to use? i am currently using a Sanyo stereo receiver from the 70s
It might need servicing, but the Sanyo is probably fine! We can obviously recommend a Beomaster but your Sanyo has stood the test of time! The best sounding Beomaster at around this time which suits the S45 is probably the Beomaster 2200 - lovely amplifier and AM as well as FM tuner. Usually very cheap!
