Question
I use a power line LAN from a WD4100 NAS to an Essence connected to a power line LAN across the other side of a room. Not 100% on whether the router plays a part - I suspect it does and that it is the "data pump" for the system.

In most cases a DHCP server already is running on the internet router - this could cause conflicts.
I am not sure, if that was part of the question, though.

No I actually did mean DHCP! I was assuming that there was no other internet modem/router, hence you would need a DHCP server to assign an IP address to the Essence, in effect setting up a mini network. Hence none of the conflicts that MM mentions.
I can imaging this being used in a holiday home, for example, which has no internet connection and hence no other reason to have a network. You would need some other method of setting up the NAS through a browser, perhaps by just plugging a laptop into this stand-alone network.

Darn good question ! (that needs some explanations on what you exactly want...)
If by "directly" you mean without creating a network, I think the easiest (and only ?) way is to connect the device that will store, play and convert to an analog signal your music files (a smartphone, a tablet, a computer...) to the line-in plug of the Essence.

If the NAS/PC is on the same network as the Essence (2nd gen), there is a DNLA server running on the NAS/PC and this has access to/is pointed to your files, you can use the Beomusic app to play back these files on the Essence.
Not a 'direct connection', but a 'networked connection'.
