Hi everyone,
For a while I have been contemplating getting a Moment but I keep reading so many members having issues with it that I talk myself out of it. What are your honest opinions of it? When it is working as it should does it justify the price? I really like the look of it and the way it operates but it does, at least from what I read here, seem to have had its fair share of problems.
I currently use an iPad for Spotify/iTunes via an Airport express directly connected to my BC9300. This works extremely well without any issues. What would I be gaining from getting a Moment?
I'm not in any way trying to talk up or down the Moment, just looking for members opinions before I decide either way.
Thanks,
G.
PS I've not, as yet, had a full demo in store of a Moment, only a casual look a while ago when I wasn't really that interested then. But now......
Livingroom: BL3, BL11, BV11-46 Kitchen: Beosound 1 GVA, Beocom 2 Bathroom: M3 Homeoffice: M3, Beocom 2 Library: Beosound Emerge, Beocom 6000 Bedroom: M5, Essence remote Travel: Beoplay E8 2.0, Beoplay EQ, Beoplay Earset
Not especially. I just wanted opinions, good or bad. I know there is internet radio and the 'mood wheel' but my interest is purely ease of use and, especially, reliability. I think the design is really clever and typical B&O but if the reliability doesn't warrant the price then that's a major consideration. I'm looking to potentially down size and going 'all streaming' would be a priority, hence my interest in the moment.
I think I need to go in store for a hands on with a moment and then decide.
Without risking repeating only what I've read about the Moment, I agree with Hiort. The Moment is basically a glorified ipad / music player.
If you're happy with AirPlay today what more can a Moment provide?
Personally I also use predominantly AirPlay with an AppleTV which works perfectly, no desire to 'upgrade'. Perhaps to an Essence at most.
The BS Moment is a soundsystem, that can be used directly with it's own connected speakers or with a connected BeoVision.
It's sources can furthermore be used from a remote NL-player, as can it play the sources of other devices on the NL-network.
It can be controlled directly via the interface and/or with a B&O remote (physical or app-based).
This makes it much more than a 'glorified iPad' - the fact that the user interface is on a screen not unlike a tablet (or iPad, if you want) does not justify a comparison with an ipad connected to an APE connected to a BC9300.
The purpose of the BS Moment is to offer a simple interface for playing music (online/offline) and radio programs using the MoodWheel and PatternPlay and secondly via searching for content to play in the secondary screens.
No iPad or tablet can do this.
These can be used to serve your needs (listening to Spotify/iTunes), but they can't replace the BS Moment functionality and integration in a B&O setup.

There is a tv - and there is a BV
I have just bought one, awaiting delivery......for what its worth, my thought process was this : using an iOS device to route music through my Apple TV and to my speakers (all connected to the TV), or even just using the Music app on the Apple TV......was convoluted to me, took a few mins to get things going.....
the Moment is a better experience for me.......Deezer, plus my CD library (ripped to FLAC), radio, and my turntable all brought together..........whiel it may sound silly, a dedicated music tablet / system has value to me......playing with different apps on my iPad was too fiddly to me, and streaming FLAC files around my flat isnt rock solid, and i can avoid both of these now.......
but its not perfect, in an ideal world, you'd be allowed to chose different streaming services, and Deezer's highest quality service only works with Sonos, though thats not been a massive issue for many, been more about software, which has had an apparently successful rewrite......
very much looking forward to living with mine.......
The software will be upgraded on Wednesday.
The experience will be transformed and the potential realises.
Feedback from Version 2 beta has been amazing.
Thanks for all your comments. Very much appreciated.
My next move is to visit a store and see for myself properly what is does . Key question for me is, does it serve my needs more than an iPad? Certainly the design appeals but I need to be sure it delivers on performance for the price.
Thanks again.
can't argue with that, though in my case, and having used most of the major services, they're broadly interchangeable to me.....been using Tidal last couple of years, more to try out the HiFi premium quality for size......but hey, as long as the catalogue is huge enough, any of Tidal, Deezer, Spotify, Apple Music will do for me........
It depends, what you want.....
With an ipad you have advantages:
The Moment has restrictions:
BUT
In my eyes the Moment is quite unique, i love this music system, because it is a (more or less) stand alone music system. If you wanna control your music just with your ipad, i don't see many advantages. If you wanna separate your music from the safari browser, your mails, etc..., the Moment is a wonderful device.

Hi G -- what all do you have connected to your BC9300? I'm certain a Moment is in my future; however, I will use it exclusively for music. That's actually a lie. I'll also use TuneIn for listening to the radio broadcast of my games instead of the TV announcers. :)
Whether or not it is worth the money.... Who knows; I think it will be to me.

I waited 2 years before I thought the Moment was mature enough for me, I would have hated my self, if I bought it and did not use it.
Here is my simple answer to your question.
1. Before the Moment, I had an iPad and AppleTV connected to TV/Beocenter2, I tried a lot to listen to streaming music, but I never got around to it.
2. After the Moment, I listen to streaming(and my old cd's) all the time.
The option to just press the moodwheel and the music just goes on, is fantastic, that way I don't need to take a choice on music whenever the song or album stops.
I think it is a very cool product, but only with the 2.x SW. It should be released today.
I will buy an M5 also, so I can use the Multiroom functionality also.

Hi Ciosad,
I have an Airport express box connected to my 9300. From that I use an iPad for Spotify. It's a shame the moment doesn't include Spotify, as I use that service a lot. The iPad doesn't have remote control whereas the moment does, but I guess you could say the iPad is the remote control.
I am glad to note no one has commented further on any technical issues which was part of my first post so I am assuming this is not such a great deal. I've read some quite favourable comments which is encouraging. Still haven't decided but will have a real good look at one when I can next get to a store.
Thanks again everyone.
Graeme.
To be honest, I think you should go try it out and be very sure what you are testing - don't assume that it can do X until you have tried it out.
I have one, running the new software. I like it now, BUT it sure felt like a step back from how I used Spotify Connect on my Beoplay A9.
The interface feels claustrophobic at times, especially compared to Spotify on an iPad where you can click on everything and it takes you somewhere that makes sense. If you search on the Moment and find the artist you like, don't expect to be able to click on that artist and go to his/her albums - if you click on the artist name, it will just start playing something from that artist and take you nowhere. You have to swipe down to currently playing to see a list of songs coming up and see what it has selected for you.
And when you're used to having a lot of stuff on screen on an iPad, it seems downright archaic to show three items at a time on the Moment. All that wasted space makes for slooooow scrolling, made worse by the refresh rate on the screen so you can't actually see what's scrolling until it's stationary. Plus for some reason, the lightness of the SoundHeart really bothers me. It feels like it's just an empty box - but that's really nitpicking.
My Jukebox has at least five defective pixels, either dead or on all the time. I think I might have to go back to the dealer on that one, but that was disappointing to see.
For me, the biggest downside is that there's no Spotify Connect. If it had that, I could forgive all the faults because I could just use it like any other B&O product.
The positives are the MoodWheel, I really enjoy that much more than I thought, and the easy integration to my FLAC library on a NAS box. Also the fact that you can use your (existing) BeoRemote to control it is really nice.
ThatGuyFromDenmark: For me, the biggest downside is that there's no Spotify Connect. If it had that, I could forgive all the faults because I could just use it like any other B&O product.
I have heard that Spotify Connect and Chromecast is coming eventually. Not sure when.
It surprises me that no-one mentiones it's sound quality!
You can easily hear differences between for instance an Airport Express, Gramofon or BS Moment. Both first sound flat, to say sometimes annoying.
And it can be used by anyone in the room and not just used by that person who started with its phone or tablet. What happens when that person leaves the room?
It's a system which can be used by more than one person in the room. Big practical benefit. If I start annoying music in precense with my daughter, she can take over without handing over my phone or tablet. Or small disadvantage you could say.
Spotify Connect does the same - you start the music from your phone, and then it streams directly from the cloud. It's not like bluetooth streaming at all.

I'd be surpriced if!
As of now neither Spotify (Connect) nor GoogleCast can be redistributed (in B&O language: linked) on the local network.
A lot BS Moment owners have their Moment connected to their NL-tv - which means: the stream is redirected to the tv via NL.
And also no multiroom of these sources in general.
Using Deezer is no problem, since they haven't restricted their service in the same way (same goes for TuneIn and DLNA content).
Then again - the guys in Struer are clever, maybe the have/will come up with some kind of solution for Spotify/GoogleCast ;-)

I know. that's a great advantage of Spotify Connect. Your phone or tablet becomes a controller.
The express and the Gramofon has this. So you have the advantage of a stable music experience.
But still less audible sound quality.
And what happens if the "controller" walks away Leaving the other persons alone. We're not always alone (at least I'm not).
Hiort: I have heard that Spotify Connect and Chromecast is coming eventually. Not sure when.
With the latest new about the growing number of paying Spotify-users (37-50+mln), they could attract a (small) part of those users. With restricted features possibly. But even a small percentage of these Spotify users would raise the number of B&O customers significantly. For these it could be the start to a whole new (B&O) world.
Beobuddy: And what happens if the "controller" walks away Leaving the other persons alone. We're not always alone (at least I'm not).
The iPad Mini that I have dedicated to 'control' my BS Essence etc never 'walks away'.
Just saying: if you want to use Spotify Connect and/or GoogleCast, you - of cource - have to take care that the rest of the family can access the device.
What kind of a dilemma? Whatever system you choose, the Moment or Essence, they all are an significant upgrade to the Airport Express soundwise.
I'm using the Essence in the kitchen with an IR-eye and its a perfect solution for listening to radio and occasionally the News coming from my TV set.
When, I want to have a serious listen to my ripped music collection, I take the Moments jukebox and have a very enjoyable listen at my bigger speaker system from within my favorite chair in the living room.
Now with the advent of the M5 speaker, the next project will be to remove all still present older ML systems and upgrade bathroom and bedrooms to this lovely small cake box.
A perfect pleasure that B&O has given to me.

StKong:I want to love the Moment so much. The idea behind it is brilliant. When streaming qualities increase and truly effortless and *seemless* linking is made available on the platforms mentioned above, I will be a happy buyer. Especially if they also offer alternative wooden finishes!
yes, its probably not the optimal way of showing off the BL90s (th Moment that is).....but how many people actually have the BL90s? the lack of Deezer Elite might be more relevant when the BL45s come out.......but even then , at 30k, how many will even have those.....
seethroughyou:....but what really settled the issue for me was noticing that whenever the Beolab 90 was demoed I never saw a Moment used by Geoff or others but instead an Auralic or a MacBook Pro laptop with a digital feed straight into the speaker.
seethroughyou:This has been a dilemma for me to and the word 'claustrophobic' has been used in a post by other Beoworlder here and that is how I found it. The dealer was also rather unexcited about it when I asked for a demo and couldn't help be drawn into speaking of its limitations at the time. I'm sure it has improved in recent months but what really settled the issue for me was noticing that whenever the Beolab 90 was demoed I never saw a Moment used by Geoff or others but instead an Auralic or a MacBook Pro laptop with a digital feed straight into the speaker.
Duels: That is true but the vast majority of people won't be using their moment with BL90s

The point is that B&O themselves does not deem it good enough to use for showcasing the BL90s, which should tell you a lot.

The majority of the BL90's, I have seen, were run via PowerLink (or WiSA) from a BV.
Then again - the BL90's are very versatile, when it comes to inputs.
You can run several other devices 'parallel' to it, if you want to - using an Auries or an Oppo.....
However, I would see no problem in connecting the 90's to a BS Moment, either direct or to a BV with the Moment connected via NL.
N.B. The 90'es are great as fronts for movies in a BV/multichannel setup.
iPad (if you want to dock it ) with AirPlay 2 connecting to a series of Apple TV and/or AirPort Express connected to speakers is superior to a BS Moment in every way and probably will cost you less even if you went with an iPad Pro. The only reason to get it is the design, but honestly, I find the iPad Pro looks better and even works better. But to each his own 🤷♂️
B&O in my life 😊:
What software / app you are using to access your local library? And / or what music stream provider and app you are using?
In the end it is all software (not hardware), unfortunately not at all a capability Bang&Olufsen is good in.

And how are you realizing the Pattern Play and Mood Wheel funtion, that were the original pillar funtionalty of the Moment concept with your combo of an iPad and AP2?
You may not need these or dislike the concept.....that is totally ok and not to discuss.
But why compare apples and pears?
Each to its own....as you say!
hasn't the mood wheel more or less stopped working? There seems to be a whole thread on it.
and I was under the impression the moment doesn't have a bl90 preset either...
