Dear Apple cult people,

With absolute dread I updated my iPhone 4s to IOS6 today, and low and behold, right at the end, I get an “unknown error”, the backup is apparently corrupt, time to start again!

I must be one of the few billion running iTunes 10 on a Windows 7 PC – surely it can’t be that hard to get it right.

APPLE IS RUBBISH (there I have said it)

What do you mean your backup is corrupt? You can always try to restore your iphone and then activate it via iTunes and that way restore from your backup. I hope that will work for you.

Running on Windows and/or with an old version of iTunes (you did update it first right?) is probably not as safe as running on a Mac but I can't say what might have happened. Antivirus software blocking something? I just hope you will be able to use your backup anyway. There is always a way. Let me know if you need assistance. I do work with this kind of things :).

Have a nice day anyway!

Thanks for the reply Michael,

I ran a manual backup just before the update as the backup during the automatic update returned an error.  After the IOS update completed and I got the unknown error I tried restoring from the backup I had only just made and was told it is corrupt and my only option is to restore the device.

I've restored it now and haven't lost much apart from a few text messages.

I too work in the IT world, mainly PC, but it still infuriates me when these things happen.

Thanks

Dan

It's more than likely your wonderful OS at fault.

Try using OS-X next time.

Good to hear. Actually I love to save some texts but never get around to erase most of them. So in one way I hope you won't miss them too much =). Strange that the backup became faulty. Usually you can select between a few different times the backup has been made.

Lots of good things in iOS6, and I hope the maps app will get better by time. They are new at own maps and I understand that they threw Google out even if their data is very much better right now.

Yup, I've been burned by that too. iTunes keep artwork in an iTunes database file instead of in the files themselves.

Well,I loaded iTunes on my PC,and the download of my music was glitch free,as also was the update to IOS 6 on my iPad.

Problems in updating the iOS appear to have been with iPhones, especially jailbreak ones.

Dear Apple cult people,

The iPhone is one of the most popular in the world. Apple one of the biggest companies etc. The days of Apple being a "cult" is long long gone. Maybe it was a cult circa 1998!

You do realise that just about every teenager on the street has an iPhone? :)

I do wonder if people think through their posts, before posting.

I don't know what all the fuss is about cults etc. Look at this perfectly well rounded bunch of individuals.......

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2206143/iPhone-5-launch-Apple-fans-world-streets-hours-go.html?ITO=socialnet-facebook-dailymail

Now all Tue has to do is to instil such a following for some fantastically desirable B&O entry products, and the rest will sort itself out. Not easy when you haven't got billions in the bank i admit. Bose and B&W are definitely going in the right direction about this, with B&W a virtually unknown name on the high street just a few short years ago.

Mad, isn't it? I was down the bottom end of town (after the gym), first thing this morning. At 8.30am there were about 70 people outside the Bath Apple Store, all queuing....for a phone!

Why queue for hours early on a cold morning? If you're going to get one, simply order it to your home or office. No queuing involved.

I wish people would stop these stupid posts.  The world doesn't care that someone has a problem with an iPhone.  There are a multitude of forums for cellphone problems.

This is a forum for Bang and Olufsen products?

It's the way the world ( including B&O ) are going . Don't fight it.

It could be worse - we could have microsuck dictating things - imagine the state we'd be in then. ( see the Op as proof )

1: Joseph Stalin: 'One day Communism will rule the World...'

2: Imams from around the World: 'One day the whole World will be a Islamic Caliphate...'

3: The movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" : 'You will be one of us - don't fight it...'

Apple fanatics: It's the way the World is going - don't fight it...Ick!

I think I may have touched a nerve here - all good stuff, Forums are about sharing knowledge and opinions, so to that end ' job done'.  Sorry to those who object to writing off topic posts - my main point is that even Apple can't perfect the software experience and there are many who criticise B&O.

To the person who called me "incompetent", I actually have a master’s degree in software engineering, and my first rule is that if someone has a bad experience it is very easy to blame that person. In reality, if people struggle to use your system then it is the manufacturer that needs to reflect and not the individual.

In this case Apple do claim to support their devices on Windows, so to that end the upgrades should be absolutely seamless.

You're quite right and I apologise for my silly remark. I was only joking.

I upgraded 2 x iPads & 2 iPhones without a hitch - via the wi-fi.

You'll probably find it's something to do with iTunes and connecting it to a computer that's causing the hassle - that's a seriously buggy program and needs updating asap -  they've only recently updated it to 64 bit and it's still a mess...

Next time , back up , but upgrade via wifi - after connecting to a power supply of course. That should work ok.

I am an Apple 'Fan' in that I've used Apple computers for as long as I can remember, and they have always worked more smoothly than the Windows OS's that I've used at work where there have been large back-up teams to sort out the endless glitches and virus problems.

Apple products are generally well designed and really are a joy to use. At least that was the case.

My main PC is an Apple IMac. It worked flawlessly until a software upgrade to 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Now we get occasional screen freezes.

Our iPad worked very nicely until a software upgrade that permanently removed the nine window thumbnails that linked to always open web pages; now the pages are on tabs more suited to large screens.

I've just opened the iPad and received a software upgrade invitation to upgrade to iOS6. Rather than hit the accept button I thought I'd look up some reviews first. The upgrade apparently removes Google maps applications and gives you an inferior Apple application (developed by Tom Tom). It also prevents you from viewing YouTube videos. So no Flash, and no YouTube. The iPad is just becoming an iTunes interface. It's more and more likely to just st on my BS8!

It was never brilliant for accessing Beoworld.

Apple seem to be losing their way.

Graham

I have an iPad 3 which I have updated to iOS6,and it is incorrect that one cannot view YouTube videos.

Additionally,I have never experienced any problems accessing a website.

In fact the benefit of iOS,as opposed to Android,is that one is presented with a full website page rather than Android's cut down version which one has to scroll down to specifically request a full version.

YouTube works great and is even better.  However I guess that is a a point of view sort of thing.  YouTube is an app now.  You will have to go the the App store and download it.

To bring this subject back to B&O, the big disappointment is Beoplayer does not work in IOS6.  My Beolit 12 is inoperative.  What rubbish!
