Sad news...
The cotton-wool inside literally caught fire: the wires are mostly burnt, as is the medium speaker can, melt and pierced. The resistors must have gone red at least. They are now pieces of carbon. There is carbon dust inside the cabinets too.
This is it. I give up. Back to the seller's place (which he accepted)..
Jacques
Hi Chatz
Have a look through this thread; http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/6294/60855.aspx#60855
The s45-2 model came with three tweeters, AD162 Philips mylar come clear (similar to the AD160), AD162 Philips Mylar Dome Shiny black and AD163 Philips Soft Fabric Dome which is a matt black colour.
I found the AD162 Mylar domes to be a little more engaging than the soft fabric dome and closer to the AD160 used in the original S45.
Drew
Thanks for the input, but I'm done with those awful speakers, which caught fire inside. Bad design, this shouldn't be anywhere near possible, this.
The second speaker I opened after the pictures is even worse, even the filter chipboard support is burnt !
Geepers just saw the pics, someone must have flogged the poor things to death. I wouldn't even want to think about the potential damage to the rest of the drivers from that abuse.Drew

Hence my giving up the project. I guess nobody will encourage me here!
Time to find a new set, I think that set is beyond help, worth it for parts perhaps!
I shall encourage you to find another pair!

Nothing (well allmost nothing) is beyond repair. It's all a question of effort and is it worth of it.
blah-blah and photographs as needed

Yes of course, but then the S45-2 are plentiful, so spending money to fix a wrecked pair is nonsense. Mine are in good physical shape, but the fire inside has made such a mess... Then again, it seems stupid that such a problem should arise at all. To me it is a silly engineering mistake, period.
I've never seen that before!
I'm very disappointed that such a mistake should come from classic B&O!
Yes, tha is strange, I have never seen a fire inside speaker! And I have seen speaker connected straight to mains.
BTW, how much power did you feed?
The temptation was too strong, I could not resist. I re-built the crossover, installed new Philips original tweeters (which I got for almost nothing) and re-assembled everything. I had to repair the melted filler unit housings with a sheet of plastic.
They work ! They don't have much bass of course, but I find them very, very pleasant to listen to, with the Beomaster 1900-2. Plenty of detail - that Philips dome is nice! - and very gentle mids.
Here they are after all! They will go to my daughter's flat, along with the 1900-2.
Great! Persistence pays

I knew it, we never give up, another pair saved, good job Jacques.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Now that's the Jacques I remember!
Good work Chartz.
Hopefully the woofers haven't been damaged so they continue to deliver good service for a few more years. Nice to see these repaired with some perseverance, the cabinets appear to be in very nice shape on the outside.
Mine burned the same way, every speaker was alright except for 1 tweeter. But the tweeters are quite common here.
Appraisal? Certainly!
Those incredible speakers have a tendency to completely disappear. I'm listening to beautiful chamber music, Beethoven's 7th trio, and it just sounds gorgeous! They can re-create the studio (?) atmosphere and they actually disappear!
What's more, they aren't aggressive at all in the mids, very nice! Voices are creamy smooth too.
They are ideal for that sort of music, because there isn't much bass energy.
Fixing them was entirely worth the effort.
Now, has somebody got lesser speakers for my daughter?

This was a good thread.Well done

I hate booming bass, be it because of the music or because of the equipment. I guess I'll need to find me a pair of these.

Yes. Beovox P30s were rendered redundant after restoring P45s.
But I don't think shipping to La France is going to be economical.
