Good as I can get them without drilling out the rivets.....
woodwork going back now...………..followed by the feet, may need to source some new feet, these are worn and quite hard
The top case is still in quite good shape with only slight water marks on the surface.....
Hardly noticeable really, but as we have come this far, steel wool and some beeswax will help things
Polished up nicely...…..
Frede posted my new front panels last Thursday, his return service is very good, so I'm awaiting delivery before I can complete.....perhaps Monday or Tuesday....however he doesn't have replacement aluminium trims for the cursers, cand be helped...new lens from Martin will help, the existing ones are quite yellow from time.
Jacques
I never considered that, I will need to invest in some toothpicks.....what about the tiny interdental brushes, may make a better job?
Worth a try I guess!
On speaker and DIN sockets I do as follows, using a small pic tool (tooth pics wont do it, has to be smaller) I tighten the contact pins inside the sockets, get behind the contact pins and press them against the middle of the pin hole, that done, I wet the pins on a speaker or DIN plug with contact cleaner, connect and disconnect a couple of times and leave to work for 5-10 min. in the same way clean with ISP and let dry
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
I guess toothpicks are smaller here then Søren!
More seriously, it has to be done really.
Collected these this evening.....
The man does an excellent job it has to be said.....
I gave the DIN plug sockets a good brush followed by compressing the small tangs inside together using two jewelers screwdrivers, found it easier that way
I think yours if going to be better than mine by the time you have finished! Have you got the matching Beomaster? That is a lovely bit of kit as well? And then you need the proper Beogram! And I do happen to have the matching speakers that I never use!
Peter
your very kind to say so....I didn't know there was a matching beomaster? I have however just recently bought a Beogram 4000 that requires some attention....
Pushbuttons turned out to be dirtier than I remember when I removed them, fortunately its only surface grime that soapy water can deal with
The Beomaster 5000 is the tuner that is part of the Beolab 5000 system. The tuner really was superb and has the capability to take its power from the two pin socket on the back of the Beolab. The speakers were the Beovox 5000, which were large floor standing speakers, of which there were three iterations. The Mark 1 was probably the most spectacular, with seven drive units and a rear socket to attach the Beovox 2500 cube omnidirectional tweeters which are a particularly iconic product. The tweeter was necessary as despite the Mark 1 having 4 tweeters, these were very directional, being cone drive units, and the cube allowed a wider listening position - and they do really work! The Mark 2 rationalised the drive units to just 4 units with only two tweeters placed at an angle to each other. Having played with all three types, this is the least successful, seemingly less impressively constructed than its two siblings. The final iteration was the Mark 3, (had you guessing there!) with the two cone tweeters replaced with three dome tweeters, which had a much broader dispersion and which rather did away with the need for the 2500 and its 6 cone tweeters but the socket remained nonetheless!
I have played with 2500s with a variety of modern speaker and they still add value as with good positioning they have a major effect of widening a sound stage. Worked very well with RL60s!!
Other units that could make up a 5000 system would be a Beocord reel to reel tape machine , a Beocord 2000K De Luxe being an obvious choice.
A turntable would be the next choice, and at the time of the Beolab introduction, the only Beogram was the 1000, which didn't really cut the mustard. B&O dealt with this by introducing the Beogram 3000 in two versions, the Thorens 124 Mk2 based version for most markets and a rarer animal based on an Acoustical motor unit that was available in the UK. Both were good though the Thorens receives more plaudits and is the more desirable really with the Acoustical model sometimes being mistaken for a slightly different 1000, which would sell it completely short.
The Beogram 4000 would only appear as the Beolab 5000 system bid farewell in 1972 but I have certainly used one with a 5000 system.
Ok...I knew there was a matching tuner, didnt know it was called a Beomaster.....could have had one from ebay a couple of months ago so will keep an eye out for one ;¬)
Having fitted the bottom panel I found I needed to lift the amplifier stage circuit board back up to allow adjustment of the switch assembly underneath due to misalignment which was preventing the pushbutton covers from moving in and out smoothly, turned out to be a more involved exercise than I was expecting....took most of an evening to get right
Second part of the front panel fitted along with Martins new lens.....
End product.....I'm very happy with the result, the sound is so sweet too. I will consider what to do about the text on the sliders, as for now I'm going to open a bottle of sauvignon blanc.
VERY nice work. And the bottle is VERY well deserved!
Martin
Dillen: VERY nice work. And the bottle is VERY well deserved! Martin
Perfect and agree with Martin
Before you go hunting for a BM 5000 receiver let me check the one I have here, I thought of using it for spares but I think it is salvageable, give me a week or so, busy with an aircon. heat pump installation.
I'll bring down the Beomaster 5000 when I next see you so you can try it out and see if you want to get one. Can also give you Beovox 5000s if you want some - I never use mine as I prefer my LS3/5As and AB1s. I did have them repaired some year ago but cannot guarantee that they don't need some love. They are the Mk3s which are the best sounding.
Sweet!
That was some project, Craig. Congratulations.
As far as wine is concerned, what is Sauvignon? Please state the origin and the vintage... Sauvignon by itself means nothing, the place where it grows is everything, and the wine can taste pretty awful too.
I much prefer Chardonnay, by the way. Chardonnay is a small village that is a few kilometres away from where I live, yes Sir!
Gents
Thanks for all your support during this exercise.....you all know how much I appreciate your input, wouldn't be possible without the knowledge and experience this forum consistently brings to the table, or workbench!
Soren.....of course I would be interested in the Beomaster 5000 you may be able to provide, but do finish the heat pump first! and I'm sure if Peter drops off his unit that I wont be disappointed ;¬)
As for the sauvignon blanc to which we have both become so partial, its a New Zealand wine....crisp and flinty, some may say sharp. Often with flavours of citrus fruits.....it seems to originate in several places, we like it more than the smooth creamy flavours often present in Chardonnay.....however I have no doubt the wines from the village itself are far superior to that which is available in our supermarkets ;¬)
We do like a good French Champaign however.....Tatinger preferebly
Look what's been delivered to The Lodge today...…...
Of course it was sold as "faulty for spares" and was described as "doesn't power up" (I haven't tried to power up) but I wouldn't have bought it if it was working...…..
The panels need attention.....does Frede refurbish these too, I will email him and find out.
Yes, it’s very rusty. I doubt there’s an economical way of fixing that. I’d try to find another example.
Shame on you...…..how could one not want to give it a go? and the satisfaction if one succeeds outweighs the economics ;¬)
Craig
Took the lid off and had a look inside, the envelope was empty...and both fuses blown...the two lamps where also open circuit
opened the bottom...…..nothing obviously damaged/burned
First suspect has to be the power supply...
Replaced the blown fuses, unsoldered the transformer and with the variac applied power...….transformer only pulled around 14mA
33VAC coming out....good to find the transformer is in good shape
And with the rectifier DC side disconnected measured a healthy 33VDC, rectifier in the clear too
