Both are known as the best speakers of B&O from the 80ies.
Which one do you prefer and why?

I heard both on my Beosystem 7000 side by side, Beolab Pentas and RL 60s. Both speakers sound clear and perform well, but In my opinion, the Pentas carry more range, especially in the lower frequencies. I went with Penta IIIs and had them for several years. I eventually had to sell the Pentas due to a move, as they were just too big to take with me. I'm using Dali Zensors now, which are also nice. If I ever do come across a good pair of Pentas in the future, I'd be mightily tempted to take them on as a project.
Hi Stereomensch
I still love my BeoVox Penta - Now put PentaVox number 2 as the front speaker for 36 years.
let's check out the specs :)
Rl 7000:
Net volume 38 litre
Frequency range +4 -8 dB 40 - 20,000 H (??)
Beolab Penta
Net volume 32 litres
Effective frequency range* 39 - 20,000 Hz
Can anyone help me? Why did B&O uses different methods ?
The Rl has a bigger net volume, so they should have a big sound? Am I right?
Here, specifications of all Penta speakers.
I have never heard the RL speakers described as the best of the 80s! The best were probably the MS150s though to be honest, the S45.2s, which were still around were ridiculously good for their size. Pentas lack real bass detail and I always felt RLs were muddy sounding - even the RL7000s. I love my Pentas though - bought a pair new and still have them.
Peter
Specs are fine, but it comes down to the sound. Why not just get both RLs and Pentas and try them out? Once you make up your mind, either sell the other ones, or use them for a multi-room setup.
Those were the days :D

Yesterday I got a pair of the redlines. Too bad all sickens are broken.
already ordered the foam version at audiofriends.
has anyone a good advice for me what I should keep an eye on?
they don’t have an ABR. Is an Beomaster 7000 powerful enough?
And another one :)
Many users point out the redlines are difficult to place. Although this was their main selling point. Flexibility.
Does it make a difference, when placed vertikal, if the woofers are on top or should the bassreflex be on top ?
Or is it the best idea to use them in the horizontal position. I have the stands.
I'm to Penta, and here's a tip-
Units can be mounted mirrored, in right and left speakers.

Here you can choose what sounds best in your room.

Questions over questions:
I have the version without the ABR.
But look at this, here is one guy who uses his speakers with two passive radiators:
Is a construction with passive membrans superior to an ordinary bassreflex system?
What do you think about this modification.
It could be found here:

My Beolab pentas have a switch. So you can decide if they're used right or left.
But I never watched at the diagram, if this switch really makes a difference?
@ Dimacri:
I thought the bassreflex solution is the just the cheap version. Usually the expensive speakers use radiators.
i have both. the pentas have a lot more power behind them but if the rls are being driven by a 6500/7000 then power is also excellent, too. both are one of only a few b&o speakers that decend to 40 hz.
i have the stands. along one of the short edges near the corner you'll see the DIN speakerlink connector. that side should be "down" so if you had speakerlink cable it would attach up into the unit. the bang olufsen name plate then reads vertically near the bottom IIRC. woofers on top. there should be an adjustment screw in the stand that lets you "dial in" the tilt from 90 deg vert to angled upwards. mine are at 90-ish.
are you using speakerlink or the original coiled speaker cable or something else?
Oh, my rl 7000 don't have a DIN plug.
They look like this one:

My stands don't have an adjustment screw :(

You may have misunderstood that.

That‘s the switch I was talking about.
Is it necessary to change the caps of the redline speakers? How long do they last 10 years, 20 years, 30 years?
I think the redline 7000 are a bit boring sounding. I use them with new surrounds made of foam and haven't changed any caps. But the redlines need more punch, I think.
The Pentas can realy create a wall of sound, that's great, they don't have a bass punch either.
What do you think?
If the surrounds are new, they will be stiff - just like when they were new. Let them play and losen up a bit.- But don't expect bass "punch" from 6,5" woofers...
Martin
The redlines are good speakers, very balanced, neutral sounding, perfect for classical music and long listening sessions.
But they're not party speakers. The two woofers were connected directly together.
Are the 6,5 woofers as good as one 13,00 woofer?

No.It doesn't add up like that. It's a matter of resonance points and many other things.(Imagine two 6,5" woofers side by side - still missing quite a bit of surface to cover one full 13" circle).
@ Dillen:
May I ask you, do you rate the M150 (not mS150!) over the rl 7000?
It's been a good few years but I had RL 140's from new with floor stands and then upgraded to Penta 2's. And it is a huge upgrade. The RL's are horrible for placement. They are so wide and in my opinion not a good looking speaker. Additionally they don't project vertically like the Pentas can. And Pentas take up minimal floor space and are just so nice to listen to. Much more detail, power and surreal softness. It's a no brainer for me.
Has anyone ever made a comparison between the redline 7000 and the redline 140?
Am I right that the rl 7000 have the tendancy to shriek at higher volumes (using a beomaster 5000)?
Pentas every time for me. I've always thought RLs were 'orrible things and have never heard a pair I liked!
DMacri: Peter Pan: DMacri Here you can choose what sounds best in your room. Normally facing right I thought I read elsewhere in the forum that they were all shipped as right speakers and one was supposed to be changed by the dealer to a mirror image, but not all dealers did so. Thanks for confirming this.

Just asked my dealer, and he said some enthusiasts flipped the panel on one unit, but it was not something they were supposed to do from B&O.
What happens with the sound regarding the 4 mid-ranges ? They dont play the same frequencies, so unless the top and bottom plays the same, and the 2 middle ones do also, then you turn the mid-range "upside-down" ? I have not looked at the schematic about this yet, just a thought ?
