I just tried that and I'm not sure it's going to work for me. There seems to be a good amount of resistance to cone movement. If I press on just one side of the dust cap at a time, I can just find a pressure point that makes less of a scraping sound. I think replacement is the only choice now, unless someone can suggest an outfit that can repair it, or can provide me with some DIY instructions. Since I'm counting on replacement, I guess there is no harm in trying a repair, but I don't want to go into it blind.
