Soooo... last Friday there was an introduction event of the Harmony at my dealer's place.

Some pictures here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kuyttendaele/albums/72157709213805051

My remarks:

The set is BIIIIG... but at the same time it's a piece of art when in the OFF/sound modus. What I didn't know was that there's a small led light between the speakers that turned on when the speakers fold open or close :-)

Soundwise no complaints at all... Picture quality to notch on 4K HDR and the set does a pretty good job on turning standard 1024p stuff onto the big screen.

Pricewise... This set is more or less the same price as the BeoVision 5 (or 9) if I recall. So there is definitly a market for the set!

I was hesitant when I first saw the pictures online. But you have to see the set in real life to appreciate it. B&O have done a very good job in turning a standard LG screen into something special!

Afterwards received a nice bottle of B&O rum... Haven't tasted it though.. But it'll probably have some software faults *joke*

Hi Karel,

Looks great in these setups. How was it on the viewing height when you're seated?

Also can I show of these pictures on the podcast tonight? And is there anywhere/anything you'd like me to credit(besides you Stick out tongue)?

I'm rather tall (1m96) and when seated I was looking at (from 4m away) somewhere at 2/5th to 1/2 of the screenhight...
No problem when showing them on the podcast.

It's Bang & Olufsen Gent - Knokke in Belgium. Owner: Wim Van de Loock.
They recently moved into this new shop. Been a customer since 1996 and very kind and helpful dealer!

Will do a descent photoshoot in a couple of weeks... although without the Harmony then.

Beautiful pictures. However, the video processing on the TV is 100% LG. As far as I can tell B&O are only making the TV stand with inbuilt speakers. Which is not a bad thing. The TV speaker +  stands look beautiful no doubt.

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beolab 8002 + Beolab 2 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Office)
  • Beolab 6000 + Beolab 11 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Bedroom)
  • Beoplay A9 Mk2 (Living Room)
  • Beosound 1 with wireless dock (Portable)
  • Beosound Balance (Dining)
  • Beoplay H95 (Focused listening, travel)
  • Beoplay H9 (3rd gen) (retired)
  • Beoplay P6 (Portable)
  • Beotime wall clock (hallway entrance)
  • BMW X5 50i with B&O Audio Package (Commute/drive)

Agree with this. But, is it just me, but every time I see a B&O presentation at a dealer it's only populated by grey-haired people in their 50s and 60s? A major worry/concern for the future of the business.

Not an ageist comment, just an observation on the type of audience who typically turns up to a dealer to demo a new product - it's the same in the UK.

I had to miss a recent similar presentation at B&O Wilmsow. According to Nick the manager it was for one night only. Apparently there are  only 5 Harmonies currently doing demonstration rounds in the whole of Europe.

Core customers. People with lots of disposable income who have owned the brand for years and aren't really that bothered about the very latest technology.  Harmony maybe not a case in point, but they're still knocking out the Eclipse with a C7 panel.  LG are selling the C9 now...

I think the business is too far gone to change the model.  People in their 20's and 30's no longer aspire to own the brand, so you trim down your dealers to meet the reduced demand whilst you regroup and think of a possible way forward.

Maybe I'm cynical, maybe I'm observing the facts, maybe I'm just wrong - but on an almost daily basis I'm collecting home systems from people selling their B&O and leaving the brand for good in favour of Sonos, Samsung, LG, Bose and even Loewe. I've been doing this for about 4-5 years now.

Well.. no.. I was 2h's late due to a huge traffic jam... at other events by the same dealer there's a good show up of people in their 30's and 40's too. And as shown in the last picture even families with kids :-)

About the younger audience or lack there of. I don’t think most young people are so interested in mingle parties for watching a TV launch. Some have also young kids and a family to take care of, or other fun things to do with their spare time. Old people probably work less, have more time and enjoy mingling more.

I see a lot of friends in my age (30ish) that also buy a lot of B&O. But since things are expensive it’s more after sale and older products. Building an interest in the brand. I think it’s more or less the same as with other exclusive products that costs a lot. Furniture, cars etc.

With that said, I wouldn’t worry to much about an old audience. But I would be happier if B&O uses the advantage of not incorporating a TV in the design so hardwired as before in a way to keep their models up to date. Like the Eclipse, it should definitely have a 9-series display, and one with the best algorithms in it. Is the C9 that good?

just saw a review of the C9 and in terms of PQ apparently it's pretty perfect out of the box with regards to colour reproduction in all modes and with upscaling too and better than the rest. The only thing they said was that obviously it doesn't go as high in brightness as led panels do. They were very impressed and called it near perfect but they didn't like the price vs the c8 Stick out tongue

Good stuff, although many of the Ces announced flahsgips haven't been reviewed yet.

The Panasonic flagship OLED goes to 1000 nits they say, but reviewers won't have it for a few months yet.

I'm expecting it to easily top the other OLED flagships in terms of picture quality.

I somehow doubt that panasonic gets more brightness out of the exact same panel, maybe on a 1% box but certainly not on a 10% box. The review I saw said the lg basically followed the sdr and hdr brightness curve perfectly up to 800 nits and then sloped a bit. apparently what ever ''short comings'' the c8 panel had are totally gone. It'll be an even closer margins game this time around I suspect, as in the tv's will be with in 2% of each other and that probably is close enough that cherry picking the actual oled panel starts to matter.

Subject to the caveat that reviewers haven't got their hands on the Panasonic GZ2000 flagship....

The deal they have with LG is to take some panels early off the production line, just before LG finish off the process.

As such Panasonic have changed / improved the heat management, and has allowed them to run the panel at 1000 nits.

Thats what they have told AV Forums, with whom they seem to have a good open dialogue.

As for whether Thera re other benefits from their early selection of panels (uniformity etc?) I can't remember. But the above is the relevant point with regards to brightness. This applies only to the flagship GZ2000 Pro Panel, not the rest of their 2019 range.

Regarding OLED and brightness compared to LED backlit screens. The OLED pixels themselves produce light and can usually flow extra bright for a shorter time whereas LED backlit screens can shine at the maximum level steady usually.

The OLED panels suffers from getting dimmer due to the organic design and also heat and power issues over the panel area. So even if an OLED can shine bright, it can only do so for a shorter period of time before it has to dim down to not wear out to quickly in spots, or to heat up to much to cause lower life and also because the panel can’t output enough power to shine the entire screen at full brightness - neither for longer periods. Meaning that OLED screens can shine bright in smaller areas or dispersed over the screen in smaller segments and just for limited time.

A LED monitor with a good backlight system is usually better brightness wise. Just look at Apples new Pro XDR screen for example.

Even on an iPhone you’ll see that they throttle down the max light if there’s a lot of bright areas on screen or high brightness level - if you have one with OLED. The LED counterparts shine brighter and stays bright.

OLEDs main selling point is that they can turn off and therefor show complete blackness. And also be thin. But the negative side is simply that it struggles to shine.

sort of explains what Panasonic are doing with the LG panel.

But as they say, we'll have to see in real life.

@ Michael

Add to that,- on smaller panel sizes the problems you list will increase due to the smaller active area. There was properly some cleaver reasoning behind choosing the 55 inch as the starting size.

Interesting the price point is 10% below one big store. So the question is: Where would you want the warranty for the OLED to be issued?

It’s also without stand, remote and speakers. The warranty should come from B&O if you buy the TV from them. I remember B&O saying that a screen could also be bought separately but that’s another story.

My wife and I went to see the Harmony launch last night and were reminded what makes B&O special. Having the demonstration and background story about Valeur harking back to the original “wheelbarrow” tv made it all make sense. All except the sheer scale of the Harmony!

The BV Harmony isn’t released yet.

How will the price of a stock C9 be in October (when the Harmony will be in the shops) - probably not like in your screenshot.

Apart from that - it is weird that a specified pricelist is already released by now - why?

Hallo Michael,

The TV is with Stand, remote and speakers, it is the same C9 as you can buy in other shops.

So yes the price is cheaper than there common stores, but as Millemissen points out, lets see in October.

Regarding the sound Karel,

I was looking up the specs of Harmony and saw that they are 450W and the eclipse is also 450W

The speakers on the harmony look very tiny and not near as big as the ones on the eclipse.

Would you say, if you have heard an eclipse,is a harmony better or?

To me it seems all of the space of the butterfly effect of the harmony speakers is taken up by plastic rather than actual speakers.

Happy to hear your thoughts as you have heard it.

Thanks

the harmony isn't tuned yet. the speakers are mostly the same. tweeter and full ranges are the same. the mid range is the one from the bl50 and the two underneath are the same a s in the eclipse.

So it should sound better probably, but nobody has heard the final tuning yet.

All that cosmetic real estate and so few small speakers. Now I’ve seen it if I owned one I don’t think I couldn’t keep thinking about it. Potty I know but still.

As it is a standard LG C9 the answer is yes.

I am curios how well it will work, personally I think I still would go for a Apple TV.

I believe only Samsung (18 and 19 models) will get the Apple TV app natively.

The announcement early in the year was that LG (and others) would get Airplay 2 and Homekit, but that Samsung would get Apple TV app plus Airplay 2.

At the time of the announcement, they said the Apple TV app would (may?) come to other TV brands in the future, but there is no firm commitment or date as far as I can see.

So no, the Harmony won't have the Apple TV app, at least not for quite a while I would suggest.
