A BM5000 fell into my lap....what could I do?
It was staring out of an add on Ebay like a puppy in a rescue shelter...….
A number of switches are jammed into the selected position and its full of debris, but they all are after this length of time....and what is one to do, cant just ignore it....
Why am I calling it a BM5000.....Beolab would be more appropriate
These will have to go to Frede…….expensive but its the only way.
With the panels removed the selector switches freed up nicely, switched everything off and after a visual inspection revealed nothing obvious decided to connect up the variac and see what a little power does...….
And the answer is nothing....no signs of life and no current pull as the variac was would up, fuses checked out fine...….connections into the voltage selector switch also look fine, will check this out in due course.
Couple of measurements inside revealed no power was arriving at the voltage selector, inspection of the power cord showed the reason for this, a slight nick in the outer sheath.....when pulled apart discovered a break in the live side, the insulation is very flakey, peeled back far too easily. Will be replaced with a new length.
This time I powered up I was rewarded with a current pull of around 140mA, quite happy with that...
No power on lamp however.....inspection revealed a broken filament, replaced it with a spare 60v 5w and when powered back up got a nice glow.
Decided to check the quiet current voltage before powering down, I feel it's a good sign if these readings are healthy...
Both look pretty good to me....wont do anymore powered up testing, time to start the dismantle and clean up, these units have a distinctive smell about them, not burning of course...more an odour of old electronics, Ok I'm a bit strange ;¬)
I do love these types of threads!!

I am only a member of Beoworld to follow Craigs threads
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
I'm only too pleased to entertain the other members who contribute so much to this site ……looking over this unit a little closer I noticed this piece of folded paper wedged in behind the shield and the capacitors....
Thinking perhaps it contained some dark secrets I removed it only to find it was completely empty....seems it was only there to prevent the shield from touching the can of the capacitor which isn't to well insulated on the end, the shield did spring hard up against the capacitor when the folded envelope was removed...…...
Could be.....looks as good as any other number! used a compressed air line to blow away as much of the loose debris as I could, and will go after the transformer bay first
Transformer, voltage selector and fuse board disconnected and everything removed for a good clean...….
I have to say I have seen much worse...……..
These fellows are showing their age, got some new ones on order...….
Ready for a clean out...…..
Bottom plate removed, looks a little dirty but in good shape.....some corrosion around the feet area which will need wire brushing down to bare metal and painting
Now is probably a good time to replace the perished power supply cables...
Cleaned all the grime from the transformer wires and took it down to bare metal......Soren would frown if I didn't do so...
And following a couple of applications of primer.....opened a bottle
Craig:.opened a bottle

No you're not,
I'm just quiet... for now
... replied to Soren about being the only one watching
Sorry
Always a pleasure to watch and read these threads.I just wish I had time to do more.New slider windows etc. on its way!

They are time consuming its true, so I do a bit at a time....its also very rewarding. Coat of primer for the inside of the bottom cover.
and following the removal of all the corrosion around the feet a coat of primer here too, I have tried to avoid the text as best I can...if you look closely you will see the front two right side struts (as you look at the picture) which support the transformer have parted company, cant imagine how this happened, would take a fair amount of force to do this. I don't think it will be a problem as the rest of the structure is still sound.....

Minor modification to the brackets and replacements caps in place....
Bottom plate now complete with new feet......
Thought I would go for green hammerite for this one, so I don't get it confused with Sorens ;¬)
Removed the bracket assembly to get better access to the power switch.....its a bit grubby too
Top of the switch assembly...power,test and speakers 1 & 2
