Seems that B&O is demonstrating some impressive (car) audio at CES:

http://www.heraldonline.com/2013/01/08/4528962/bang-olufsen-partners-with-audi.html

"As well as experiencing the new standards set by the Q7, you can also witness the revolutionary 3D audio technology for yourself at the listening room at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, located in the Audi booth 1130 in North Hall. The room will also contain an impressive array of Bang & Olufsen products, including:

• 18 fully active Bang & Olufsen speakers, including seven floor standing BeoLab 5’s and ceiling mounted BeoLab 3’s, all showcasing the patented acoustic lens technology as seen in B&O car audio systems

• More than 20 KW of ICEpower amplification built in the speakers

• A 103” BeoVision 4 plasma TV, the ultimate in home cinema viewing"

My friend's who is in tech has flown over to attend the CES. Maybe I should get him to visit the B&O booth.

Looks so so amazing and cool. I like! I hope I will get a place one day where I can wire all guest rooms with those loudspeakers!

I think they look horrendous, on or off. I wouldn't want my wall blighted with these speakers. I've seen something very similar before in a B&O showroom already.

Wow, didn't see those coming! I really hope they sound spectacular in the ceiling and that they can be used as surround sound as i am moving house soon and was wondering how i might get extra speakers in the lounge!

I assume they will take a line input from a Playmaker - really need to find a way of airplaying to multiple rooms without having to use stupid iTunes - i use only Spotify these days.

Has anyone seen anything of the rumoured new surround sound system? Which i assume would be BeoLab 14 if they miss out the infamous number 13?

Just to be clear - these speakers do not have the amplifiers built in - there is a separate unit called the Amplifier1 which contains the six amps required  to drive a pair of BL15's and a BL16. This amp is quoted as "rackable" which sound to me like it needs to be hidden somewhere. I assume that this will have multiple input connections and switching etc. but I cannot as yet find any specs or puctures of said Amp.

The first google i read said a total power output of 195 watts - i didn't believe that for one second! Thankfully the second google corrected this at 690 watts total - similar kind of power to the A9. Substantial!

I'm not so sure until more details of the "digital sound engine" that is the Amplifier 1 are released. Firstly I haven't seen any pictures but it is referred to as "rackable" which suggests you may not want it on show in your living room but mainly that the BL15/16/Amp1 seems to be an active speaker system, albeit one with the amplifiers remote from the driver enclosures and therefore each amplifier/crossover is tuned to each particular driver in the BL15/16.

Of course all of this might be adjustable/programmable within the Amplifier 1 to suit other speakers etc. but, as I said, there seems to be zero information available on the Amplifier 1 at the moment.

"you can easily transfer morning news audio from the Bang & Olufsen television in your living room over to the BeoLab 15 in your kitchen"

If you look hard into the B&O-homepage, you can find this statement. But no further details.

Beolab 15 and 16 look like variants of the Beovox 1&2 to me. As beolabs there is the suggestion that they have built in amplifiers, but I find the B&O website so uninformative and difficult to navigate these days I have given up trying to explore further.

These are not at al BeoLab speakers since they lack amplifiers. But still they are named that? I don't really see the point then. They are powered by an amplifier up to 100 meters away. Just like BeoVox + BeoLink Passive (which is what it is?).

I don't like the look of the speakers, they look quite strange. If I had done the B&O pictures I would have put the bass-speaker somewhere else. I think the BeoLab 3 + BeoLab 11 looks much better, and you can also take them with you to your new house without a problem.

And they are truly powered speakers!

Beolab 50, Beolab 8000 x 2, Beolab 4000 x 2,
BeoSound Core, BeoSound 9000, BeoSound Century,
BeoLit 15, BeoPlay A1, BeoPlay P2, BeoPlay H9 3rd Gen, BeoPlay H6, EarSet 3i,
BeoVision Eclipse Gen 2 55", BeoPlay V1-40,
BeoCom 6000 and so much else :)

They are called Beolab because it is an active design —there's a difference between powered and active. I guess building amplifiers in walls are against building codes, maybe?

Active: The crossover is placed before the amplifier and each driver has its own dedicated amplifier.

From what I have heard, the amplifier has separate outputs for treble and midrange as well as a sub-woofer output. This would imply that the cross over is before the power amplifier and hence these will count as active speakers. In other words, the amplifier is tailored for the particular driver, or has the ability to be tailored. However I have no specific details.

Alright, thanks. Didn't think of that. Yes - thumbs up

I can imagine the speakers sounding quite differently depending on what kind of material/wall they are placed in?

Say you hack them into a half meter thick stone wall, there will be no extra volume. Compared to a dry wall that would be a non carrying wall with no insulation... I wonder how that will work? Confused

Like all speaker placements its suck it and see (or listen)  These speakers are not for every house but then a wall mounted flat tv will not work in my house in my current tv room. I think they are in line with the B&O clean unobtrusive concept.

Right, but what will I do with the gaping hole in my wall when I realize that was the wrong spot? Or the wife does some "re-modeling" ? Big Smile

I think in-wall speakers are great for the outdoor patio, sauna or jacuzzi. But hidden speakers... Hmmm.... There was a speaker made by ELAC with some third party technology (can't remember) ELAC imago was the name, the speaker was a "picture" you hang on the wall.

Lucky you! Those look like design classics from the 20s or 30s. It's very bauhaus. Never goes out of style. So many furnitures  made today are still based on that look. Actually some of the designs from that time frame are revisited constantly.

Linn have done it for years and sell extra backboxes to improve sound, also there is a company called artcoustic that put paintings over the speakers.

I am sure there is another company ,that makes a speaker invisable,as you put a thin layer of plaster over it and paint as usual. There is so much competition in this bracket, home cinema installs have used them for years.I personally think b&o speakers should be on show and active.

Judging by one of the cad renderings on the official B&O site, there are dedicated enclosures. This means the drivers will have a fixed volume of air no matter what wall they are placed into.

I am no fan of in wall speakers, but they are a massive market especially in cinema rooms these days.

These sound very interesting, and installation is just like the hundreds of other pairs of passive in wall you can buy.  Build the bacbox into the wall at construction, then fit the speakers later.  I see these as a good way of getting into the custom instal market.

We are not talking hifi for audiophiles, we are looking at a B&O competitor to the huge number of CI in wall and in ceiling speakers sold every year, and opening the brand up to a new market.  As stated by someone previously loads of people are plastering speakers into walls and they are completely invisible.   I don't like in wall and would have wal mounted BL3 or BL9 on the floor everytime, but for a company like B&O to ignore market demands would be stupid.  Just because the majority here wouldn't use this solution, doesn't mean there isn't a huge market in customers cinema rooms, home automations systems and new build houses.

beoworld is about as far from representative of what sells in the AV industry (or even B&O stores) as you can get, and many of those who post so negatively about new products should try and remember that.

+1 Chris,

B&O disappoint me with these new BeoLabs 15 & 16.

I was waiting for Satellites and the Boomer BeoLab 14.

Who will buy these speakers for more 4.000 euros in 2.1 sound system only ?!

Crazy, what B&O has launching yesterday !! Even Hotels don't will buy that ... too expensive.

Maybe the Labs 15 & 16 were conceived for the small market of Yachting only !

Regards.

If Video sizes gravitate to 65-95 inches, there will be ONLY room for in wall speakers in most homes.  I like them, but then I already own and like a pair of beolab 5000 panels.
