I am looking in to update my BeoLab 9 and have a hard time deciding on new B20 og used B5. B5 has fo me always been dream but too expensive. Now they are within reach used but for less price I can get brand new B20 with new technology...any thoughts?

I had BL9 and not really satisfied with them. To sharp sound.

BL 20 is much better, but I had go for BL5.

I got mine MK2 for aprox 5200€

Cheaper then new BL20.

But thats my two centsWink

Harmony 65 for better panel, sound and closer to a B&O design IMHO. I would go with LG GX + Stage over an Eclipse...

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beolab 8002 + Beolab 2 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Office)
  • Beolab 6000 + Beolab 11 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Bedroom)
  • Beoplay A9 Mk2 (Living Room)
  • Beosound 1 with wireless dock (Portable)
  • Beosound Balance (Dining)
  • Beoplay H95 (Focused listening, travel)
  • Beoplay H9 (3rd gen) (retired)
  • Beoplay P6 (Portable)
  • Beotime wall clock (hallway entrance)
  • BMW X5 50i with B&O Audio Package (Commute/drive)

I have 55” Eclipse and love it. Harmony is better on both sound and picture again. If you need the moveable stand you need Eclipse. I like the Eclipse design very much, to me it is more stylish than Harmony. The movement is nice and in off stand cool but when on it is a bit in your face and I do not like the little gap between screen and speakers.

BV Harmony 65 / Eclipse 55 / BL 50 / 19 / 18 / BS 2 all brass

BV Horizon 48 / V1 40 / BL 17 / Beoplay S3 all black

V1 / BL 3 / BS Essence MKII / Beoplay A3 all white

BS Moment / BS 3000 / BS 3200 / BL 400 all silver

Headphones / bluetooth speakers / BLC NL-ML / BLGateway

I know…B&O virus has grown on me !

Bit off topic indeed but only replied to the question above.

On topic: I agree with you that BL5 is even better then the BL20. I assume there is not much difference between BL9 and BL20, or am I wrong here?

I would always go for 5's too, unless you're in the US/your dealer of tech is prohibitively far away. In that case I would have more ease of mind with the 20's. but that's the only reason, sound wise the 5's are superior by a fair margin.

New: Beovision Harmony, Beolab 50's, Beolab 28's, Beolab 18's, Beolab 17's, Beosound Stage & LG, Beosound 2, Beoplay M3, Beoplay A1, Beoplay Portal, Beoplay H4 gen 2, Beoplay E8 3.0

No but yes, so possibly. We're talking about older speakers and depending on the year you get and how they've been used it could be so. but mostly that you don't get warranty(depending) and if something happens they are bloody heavy, 61 kg/134 lbs each. 20's are very easy to move compared.

in other words, it depends, new vs new (or refurb) then lab 5's all day long. I don't consider any real repair cost prohibitive for 5's unless you payed top dollar for a set, because you get so much value for money. But IF!! IF you need to do it and your dealer is very far away, it's a pain in the ass to get them there.

Thanks a lot for your reply Mikipidia and a very valid point...the B5's I have found are from 2009 but do not know the background. I buy from a dealer and will get 12 months warranty but it may be a bit of lottery but price is 7400 dollars which I guess is pretty fair...

12 month warranty is great, if anything pops up it’s usually in the first year of ownership. After that it’s just age and the price seems good to me Smile

Are they mk1 or mk2’s?

Beolab 5 has more power obviously. But it is also much bigger. Most people who is not into B&O think the 5s look like spaceships and Beolab 20 just like more subtle speakers.

I also toyed with the idea and might change some day but I’m pretty happy with the 20s. They have wisa, toslink and line inputs (the wired ones can be used at the same time as the wired power link). Beolab 5 has a sp/dif input and power link but nothing else. And more or less requires more cabling.

There’s also a lot of issues with the Beolab 5s that means they might require a new chassis for a hefty sum in not too long.

If you can get them for a good price, has a good place to place them and really need the power then I think it’s a good idea but remember the potential risk. Enjoy whichever choice you make!

Hello,

This is what I have found in the forum but there is not a clear statement regarding MK1 and MK2.

https://archivedarchivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/26433.aspx

https://archivedarchivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/t/39408.aspx

It looks like there are multiple revisions based on serials.

@Mikipedia: may you please clarify which serials are MK1 vs MK2 and main differences between the two?

Thanks!

I don't know of the top of my head, I usually ask my dealer friends to check it for me. Surely your dealer should know or a dealer on the forum here should be able to check them :)

I listened to them both side by side in the store once.

To me there wasn’t that much between them. I preferred the 20 but the look of the 5 is iconic.

The similar decision is whether given a choice you’d buy a new BMW 5 series (BL 20)  or go with last generation 7 series (BL 5). To me, I’d go with the current gen because of the warranty, support and technology.

B&O in my life 😊:

  • Beolab 8002 + Beolab 2 + Beosound Core with Essence Remote (Office)
