Hello everybody.
I have troubles with my CD X. I have read all topics here on the forum about CD X and its issues. I get my CD X many year ago as present in non-functional state. For many years I have been thinking the CDM fails. Last week I bought another CDM from eBay, change it and no change happen. Now I know it was pretty stupid move but it kicked me into fixing it.
I am not good in electronic but I do not want to resing.
Do you have any idea, what i can/should do next?
Thank you very much!
Should I consider recaping, or you think there is an issue in an integrated circuit?
Hi,
It is difficult to troubleshoot and fix electronic components without actually being able to have "hands-on". There are some common failures on various units that people share here though. With the CDX there are the griplets and I believe an issue with the electrolytic capacitor for the door closing mechanism. You said you have addressed the griplets and that didn't fix your problem. The next step is to dive more into the circuitry. You will need the service manual and some basic test equipment like a multimeter and an oscilloscope. The CDX can be a real bugger to troubleshoot though. You said you don't have much electronics experience so you will definitely need to remedy that :-).
You have to start somewhere but I would probably try something simpler than the CDX. I have found that the majority of failures on these audio components are related to connection issues. Failed solder joints, loose connectors, grounding issues. On a number of units the old electrolytic capacitors can certainly be a common failure but that usually isn't the case with the CDX.
It would be better to dive in and investigate what is causing the failure at this point since the griplet repairs are done. Start with the service manual and check that voltage supply levels are correct. Check all of the connectors for bad connections.

One other thing to check is if the door is closing good when the CDX tries to spin up and read a CD. There is a door open/close switch in there if I remember correctly that must indicate the CD is correctly in place to read. If it isn't I think the display will show that error you mentioned.
Thank you very much Sonavor. I was hoping for you response. You told me what I need to here. There are no shortcuts right now :-D I have all tools I need now so I am going to investigate. I will let you know about my progress...
Ok, it took some time, and to be honest I did not rush to solve it but finally, CDX is working. There is only one minor issue.
First of all, I fixed all griplets on PCB 4 and PCB 5, tried run CD X unassembled and it was working fine. Then I put it together and CDX does not start spinning the disc. So disassembling one more time, and we are running ok.
I just move the wiring of plug 74 and it was working assembled too. After the initial test, everything sounds nice. This morning the question mark is back but only until I tilt the player on its left side. All switches are completely fine and did the adjustment described in the service manual.
EDIT: Now it failed again and tilting is not the way to "fix it". It looks like sometimes the motor in the laser unit has some trouble to start spinning. It jerk one time after lid closed and then the questionmark appears.
Has somebody any idea what can cause the issue?
New member here,
I'm following this thread closely as my CDX is showing the same behavior. I found this thread in these forums that seems very promising and I'll try it soon on mine and let you know.
