Thanks! Coincidentally I have been listening to another Widor piece to try out the speakers, Toccata from Symphony No. 5.

The organ in it sounds amazing on the 5s, and just slightly less amazing on the 9s.

Yes, I am somewhat swinging back to the 5s. Trying to decide if I want to disconnect my Beosound 5 from the other room and move it into room with the 5s so I can try the digital connection and see if that adds anything to the sound.

If they're a good deal, buy them.. You sound like you're starting to love them.

If you don't and return them, you won't stop thinking about them!!

I would be asking for a bigger discount than that for that particular pair. Also, I would be asking for the full new product warranty as you'll technically be the first owner.

20% is nothing. They have been writing them off since 2007 over I guess three or five years. They should give you at least 45% off. They were demo units and there to sell other units so they have paid themselves over and over again. I would not accept the 20% discount. Six years old and probably cranked up quite high at times.

Thanks! That is what I have been thinking. Originally they were only offering me 20% off the current price for a new pair. I pointed out that that amount would still be more possibly than the full price of this pair new in 2007. That is when they came down to 20% off of the 2007 price.

I have been thinking of offering them the price of a new pair of 9s and see what they say.

45% off the current price of a new pair, or 45%  off of the 2007 price? Price I am currently being offered is 20% off the 2007 price.

You need to remember that those figures are borderline for the dealer losing money simply by selling on Pair A, then buying visually identical new ones to replace them- albeit with minor tech changes,

Only when there is a distinct new version (think BV7 versions) will dealers reduce prices 'to clear'.

Lab 5's from 2007 will be fine to demonstrate and take orders for new ones - why would a retailer remove/deliver/replace the old ones at a loss ?

Quite literally, a waste of time & money.

I have to agree, I don't think a 45% discount is reasonable. If I was the dealer, I wouldn't take such a hit.

I think the 20% off the 2007 price is pretty good, as long as the full warranty is supplied as well.

They are including a 1 year warranty, not the normal 3 year warranty.

Of course they would not sell if they did not profit on it... But the buyers interest lies in the price. And I believe they have quite large margins on the price, and they can surely buy new ones for the same or less(demo units and all..) - and sell those at a higher price.

Frankly I would never pay 20% off for such an old system that probably was on 24/7 for all those years. Perhaps carried around to events and previous customers.

I would ask a 20% discount on a new set instead then. Or much more as I said before for the older set.

B&O are offering great incentives at the moment, go on ask for at least 20% off a new pair Big Smile

You know you want them Smile

On another organ note! Just played Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor on our Lab5s, mind blowing!!

The organ is known as the King of instruments, maybe the Beolab 5s are the King of speakers!

I just a purchased a pair of lab5s today :-)! A demo pair since july 2009 got a great deal.

64500dkk(about 8600eur) with delivering and a two year warranty :-)

Hopefully they match my bv11! But I don't get a chance to try before moving out in march.

Sorry!
I was too fast there, on the way home from school.. The asking price from the dealer is 74.900dkk(about 10.000eur) but if i give my Beosound 5 encore, i'll get the pair for 64.500dkk, which i probably do, since i don't want the mess with selling it, myself...
Then he exchange my BL12-3 to a pair BL3 on floorstands Smile

One more week for me to listen to the 5s and decide. The room with the 5s was repainted over the weekend. Today I will be reconnecting everything. Going to set it up with 5s in front, 9s in rear, and then connect my 4000s as center rears. Then watch some movies.

I agree with this, I would try 20% off a new pair, if it includes an additional 2 years warranty and the speakers will be 6 years newer.

Not that the older speakers will be bad, we have four BL5s and we bought them used. We love them, except one is in for repair at the moment. New chassis/base driver.... 1500 CHF

So ... it is worth considering the value and security in the additional warranty.

I have been demoing the 5s in my house now for 3 1/2 weeks. I have them for another week and a half. I am starting to rethink my opinion and may want a pair. Since turning "LOUDNESS" to "ON" I find I am liking the much better than before. The question is whether I like them enough better than my 9s to justify the cost.

Question: Speakers I am demoing are a 2007 pair that have been in the store since 2007. They have been moved around for in home demos etc.

Any thoughts on buying the demos? Anything to look out for? Any changes been made since 2007 such that new ones would be different?

Thanks!

The lab5 are a "tour the force" great all round speakers... But because the way they are designed they need lots of space around, behind and sides, or the sound will be spoiled greatly. B&o stores, as i have seen, usually sets them in the corner with the idea of showing off, unfortunately...

Your room seems small for them, it will require appropriate positioning but away from the walls!

I love mine especially via digital cable.

If I may ask a silly question: how did you engage the Loudness feature?

I think you may be right. My room is such that I can not place them out in the open. The center of each speaker is 22 inches from the wall. BV7-55 between them. One speaker is near a 45 degree corner and thus is somewhat open, other speaker is right next to a Beosystem 1 cabinet.

Hi

I have my bs5/bm5 connected to my bv7 using spdif. I am now listening to Agnes Obel and I notice a difference when I listen via spdif compared to ML. For me the sound is a little more clear and crisp when Using spdif.

I don't know why there is a difference as the quality of the dac in bv7 and bm5 should equal good. Or, I would expect so. There is 15 meters of masterlink and digital cable from bm5 to bv7.

I would imagine a direct spdif connection from bm5 to bl5 would be a difference. That is the case when using bs9000.

I prefer direct digital as I detect a clearer sound. Don't know why. I do notice digital is much louder than analog... Maybe there is less strain on the amps to perform at a specific spl. I'm just speculating thou.

I do think thou, you room is to small for the bl5, unfortunately

I have been watching Skyfall today switching between the the 9s and 5s trying to make my final decision before the demo 5s go back to dealer Monday. I noticed in certain scenes the dialogue seemed much clearer with the 5s. So I unplugged my 7-4 and realized that in some scenes, dialogue is sent to the front left and right speakers in addition to the center, although at a much lower volume level.

No. I did not. Dealer picked them up today. I came to the conclusion that while they did sound better than my 9s, they just did not sound enough better. Maybe I will miss them and change my mind and order a pair, but right now I am missing the visual impact more than the sonic impact. LOL

My room, my ears, and my listening volume I am sure are large factors in what I hear and thus my decision.

I did order new white covers for my 9s.

A very good choice: the white covers for the BL9.

If you are not convinced with that much better sound from a BL5 (with a higher pricetag), then your existing speakers will perform very good with the correct placement.

Enjoy your setup and thank you for your posts about the comparison between the speakers very useful to read. I know member John will appreciate this test too. After long searching and testing he also selected the BL9 as perfect speaker. He is very happy with them. It just shows how good the BL9 speakers are.

Enjoy your music!

Interesting thread and interesting end result. I seriously consider an in home audition of BL5s against BL9 too. Only difference is I own the BL5s but consider "Upgrading" to BL9.  Lately they received very high praise in reviews here on the site.

I spent 100s of hours trying to make my BL5 sound good in my living room. During my two years of ownership I  received very kind help from members of this forum - including even Mr. Molton and Geoff Martin. But neither fibonacci backed placement, concrete slabs or absorbers helped.

I found that to get at least some amount of bass I had to calibrate the speakers outside on my balcony and move them all the way into the corners of my living room. I mostly listen to classical music and watch movies but I find myself prefering my headphones for serious listening.

I think that a simple switch for bass calibration will be a big step up with the BL9 and I am really sad it is not on the back of the BL5s too.

Interesting comments. I too wish the 5s had the option to adjust the bass with a switch, if desired.
