The tape deck on this monster works fine for play and rewind but will not fast forward. I believe there are two belts on this that are both in place so I'm wondering if it's a gearing problem. It's hard to get at as there are so many wires attached so I'm looking for some advice on what to look at to save me tearing it all apart.

Thanks as always

If you didn't replace the idler wheel rubber parts, I suggest you do that.

martin - thanks. any way to verify if that's the issue? I guess i'm confused as to why it would rewind but not FF

All of these drives will need new new belts and idler rubber parts by now. Symptoms can vary a little, but yours are common.
Cleaning off old lubricants and adding fresh will also be needed. This goes for the reel spools in particular.

Once you have the Beocenter open in service position, it's merely a matter of three screws and two plugs.
With all due respect, and don't get me wrong, but if you cannot take out the tape drive, you are not the right one to replace the idler rubber parts. It's a bit more involved.
