FYI.  This is a quick recommendation for the BL 28 Technical Information Guide.  Almost certainly written by Geoff Martin, it is at pains to make available to the layman (me) such topics as beam width control, ARC, ABL, room acoustics and speaker placement.  Much of the discussion is applicable beyond the BL 28.

Thanks. This will come in handy, as my 28s are being installed in my office next week (along with a pair of 50s in my family room). Very excited!

If you actually manage to stay awake while reading the TGS, and you find any typos or errors, please let me know and I'll clean it up on the next version.

Cheers

Thanks Geoff,

That is a really useful and informative guide, the notes on speaker placement should be particularly helpful to potential owners.  I didn't see any mention of the "Beosonic" control wheel in the app for making sound adjustments.  I think this could be useful to cover, particularly as the treble adjustment in Beosonic appears to act from a lower frequency than the treble control in the Equaliser?

Kind regards, Steve.

Steve.

Hey geoff,

I was wondering why the volume for the 28 goes from 0-100 instead of 0-90 on the 50s and 90s. Can you please illuminate us on this difference?

Thanks

I would love if this 28's Technical Information Guide could be updated to cover also technical parts like amps, dacs etc just like 50's and 90's guides. So wont be reason to take apart new speakers to see what they have been eating. Stick out tongue

I am also curious about that 0-100 volume range.

Beolab 50, Beolab 28, Beolab 19, Beolab 17, Beolab 12-2, Beolab 12-1, Beolab 11, Beolab 7-4, Beolab 3, Beolab 2, Beovox 2-2, Beocenter 2

Hi again,

Note that BeoSonic does not have an effect when you're using the Beolab 28s in Power Link mode.

The volume range of all B&O Products has always been decided by the UI/UX designers over the years, and, as those of you with older B&O Products can attest, has changed many times. Some examples: 0.0 - 6.0,  0 - 72, 0 - 90, and 0 - 100. The newer products have the 0 - 100 range, however, in order to maintain compatibility with older devices, the "old" 0 - 90 steps have exactly the same gains as the "new" 0 - 90. You just get 10 extra steps on top.

Some people who confuse listening level with volume setting may ask "Why do you need 10 more steps? Isn't it loud enough already?" However, it's important to remember that the output level is a result of the combination of the volume setting and the level of the signal. A quiet moment in a movie at volume step 70 might be nearly inaudible, whereas a Slipknot tune on the same device, still at volume step 70 might be painfully loud.

This is why, generally, people who listen to "loud" (aka pop and rock) music often ask me why the smaller B&O loudspeakers start having to protect themselves at volume settings that are lower-than-maximum. The reason is that some people (like me, for example) also listen to music that gets quiet sometimes - and then it should be possible to turn this up enough.

I wrote a blog posting related to this topic, if it's of interest:
https://www.tonmeister.ca/wordpress/2021/05/07/turn-it-down-half-way/

There is no "Technical Sound Guide" for the Beolab 5 - however, the "normal" user guide has some technical information in it.It can be downloaded from here

cheers
