Friends, I'm thinking about buying one of these portable speakers and given how close they are in price (Level with wood grill) but how much better the Level apparently sounds (it's more a competitor to Beosound 2 than Beosound 1), I wonder--why would someone purchase the BS1 if also considering the Level?
Aesthetics only? Perhaps the Mozart platform is more appealing because it's the new thing? Or the replaceable battery and upgradeability wins?
Level also has a splashproof IP-rating that would increase durability.
Any thoughts about what I'm missing?
I once owned a BS1 and love the look--moreso than Level, in fact, but wonder if the sound is so much better on Level that buying BS1 would be a silly thing to do. Thoughts?
Currently: BeoLab 17, BeoLab 18, BeoSound Core, Beosound Level, Beosound A1 2nd Gen, BeoPlay S8 Connection Hub, Halo, Essence Remote
Previously: BeoSound 1 non-GVA
Hey Curly, although they're both really nice speakers, in my opinion, sound-wise, the Level wins against the BS1 and given the choice I'd go with the Level for that reason alone. I have 2 BS1s (purchased before the Level came out), and I've actually just ordered a Level (well, 2, but one is for my daughter at college).
If you prefer the design of the BS1, then that's a good enough reason to choose it over the Level. The form factor of the BS1 does make it easier in some cases to place on a counter or tabletop, as it isn't as wide as the Level, if that's what you choose to do. (I'm going to wall mount my Level.)
Another advantage to the BS1 is that it has Deezer built-in, if you use that like I do, and can also take part in a multiroom setup. Multiroom is supposed to come to the Level, but who knows when.
Even though the Level is newer and to my ears sounds better, that doesn't make the BS1 a silly purchase depending on your use, needs and preferences.
Good luck with the decision, and let us know which one you go with!

It’s a difficult one! You and I should have a discussion face to face :). And you should have a listen at your dealer’s using the same tracks, to compare the speakers in question.
I do like the sound of both the Beosound 1 and 2 more than that of the Level. I remember the time when I heard all 3 for the first time. I felt unsure after having heard the Level (even if it’s good), and was instantly convinced by the BS1 and 2. Especially the 2.
Now, there are many that like the kind of «centered» and mid-range focused sound of the Level and maybe depending on your preferences it does sound better. Maybe the one I listened to at my dealer’s was not set up properly. But how do I describe a feeling you can only feel? To me the BS1 sounds like a flow, a river, there is some magic to music being spread out of that downward-facing tweeter that I didn’t have with the Level. Then again, you might be able to tune the Level more to your liking. That’s where I’m interested in owners who got both and who have got a long-term experience.
My biggest issue is that the BS1 lacks some bass. Which the BS2 fixes easily. My god the BS2 sounds good, and at my dealer’s the Level never seemed to be able to get close. Even more so, the Level seemed to lack on the bass front too. I’d say the BS2 is close to the Balance rather than the Level. Both my dealer and me agreed that the Balance sounded big, and similar to the BS2, but somewhat more capable, while the BS2 had a more pleasing sound signiture. That’s part of the reason why I’m divided if my next speaker should be a BS2 or a Balance.
I own a Beosound 1 in Anthracite, and love the look of this matt dark gray finish and the «floating» top more than the design of the Level. And since I have got one, I’m not sure I’d want the BS2. But I still haven’t decided. I’m in talks about a bespoke-edition Balance with B&O, but even if the Balance is fantastic in its sound, I’d still prefer the sound of the BS2. I honestly had the impression the Level wasn’t that convincing. But it would look stunning next to a Beosound 1/2 if you already had one.
In terms of tech and how future-proof they are, my bet is that the Level is a safer choice. Who knows, maybe an improved next gen of the BS1 will be released at some point. But what with all the confusion around Beolink vs. Mozart I don’t know what to expect. They are working on Beolink for the Level, but ’m not sure if they are working on a Mozart-BS1.
I’m in a serious trouble myself because my ideal speaker would be the sound image of the BS2, the performance of the Balance, tech that includes both Beolink multiroom, active room compensation and Mozart, and a design that is like a mix between the Level, the BS1 and the Balance.
You’re probably feeling just as confused as I am. I might end up getting both the Level and the BS2 or Balance. But I’m keeping my BS1.
I own the lot: 2 x BeoSound 2's, 2 x Stage, Level, Balance, Edge and a BeoSound 1.
Level v BS 1? Level by some distance. More rounded sound, far easier to move around, can be wall-mounted. What's not to like?
moxxey:What's not to like?
Price alert: The aluminum w/grey fabric Level, non-voice assistant, is $1301 rather than $1499 on amazon.com (US) (ASIN=B08SXPH879), at least for one buyer this week... (Not for @Curly who wants wood grille.)
“It looks like a speaker and not some alien artifact”.
SPOT ON.

3) Assembled in China vs. Czech (both with Dansk-Al pieces).
My BS1 causes me more issues than the Level. It constantly disconnects from wifi and the only way to reconnect is to reboot the BS1. Audio is good, but nothing special - Level is a, sorry for this, a level above it.
Level is just far easier to move around, too. I wouldn't get a BeoSound 1 if I was going to make this decision now. I'd get a BeoSound 2 - I own two - if portability wasn't the reason for purchasing.
Thanks for this, Moxxey.
I think it's coming down to price. I can get a pre-owned BS1 for about $1,000 but a Level will cost about 70% more. I'm not sure it's worth it when I like the look of the BS1 more, even if the Level has the wood grill.
We will see. I'm not in a rush so I'll hunt for a bit. :)
When the Level first came out, I trialed a Level and BS1, and bought the BS1. Why?
1) For all the praise from various sources about the amazingly awesome sound from the Level, I didn't hear it. It does sound nice, and in a perfect environment, it does sound better than the BS1, but to compare it to rivaling the BS2, to my ears, is flat our hyperbole. It's not even close (I do own a BS2). In my kitchen, the BS1 won because it had fuller bass and sounded better "off axis" (where most of my listening would occur). I spent a lot of time switching the sound back and forth between the BS1 and the Level, and decided I would be very happy with either. There was no clear winner.
2) The BS1 supports B&O multi-room. I have a BS2, Eclipse and Essence that I frequently "join" in one way or another. Use Chromecast? I've had so many problems with Chromecast that I have pretty much given up on it. Whenever I try to use it for some reason, it inevitably involves fiddling - restart the app, restart the phone, restart the device. This is both with a CC Audio as well as B&O equipment. In fact, it was poor CC performance that led me to buy a new device since my kitchen already has a BL3500 (connected to BS9000 connected to CCA), but the CCA was (and remains) too unreliable. Some say that it might be my mesh network or I should run everything at 2.4GHz, but sorry, in my house NL works sooo much better. It didn't help that at the time of purchase B&O and Google were having some issues with Chromecast working at all on some devices. Also, it would have been difficult to explain to SHMO that the new device has the same problems as the old device it is replacing/augmenting.
3) No need for portability so the Level's advantages here didn't help.
4) Price. I got a brand-new, recently discontinued "New York" / "gradient" edition BS1 for a great price.
This was my reasoning back in March, and I haven't changed my mind. The BS1 is a great addition to my kitchen. At the time, I also though maybe I was making a mistake, buying the "old" BS1 instead of the new kid on the block, but I looked at it more as "tried and true".
Curly: I can get a pre-owned BS1 for about $1,000
You might want to make sure you're getting a mk2 BS1 because I thought the original BS1 sounded weak (although, maybe they fixed it with the same software as the mk2 BS1). I'm no expert on this. However, when I first heard the BS1 when it first came out, I was extremely underwhelmed... yet, now I own one and think the sounds is quite good (for what it is, obviously, it doesn't rival my BS2). I attribute this to it being a newer version, but, again, it could be software tuning across the entire line, maybe someone more knowledgeable can weigh in.
I own a BS1 and have trialed a Level.
I like the sound of the BS1 over the Level. The Level sound more harsh and while it have an easier time producing a decent bass respons, it also falls apart fairly quickly (at least earlier than what I've hoped). The BS1 can produce a decent bass respons if placed right (near a wall or corner), while the Level doesn't need the same help from the room.
I think the BS1 wins on design, while the Level wins on ease of use. The touch interface on the BS1 is kinda bad, while its much more clear and easy to use on the Level.
The Level is based on the new platform, so in theory it should be more future proof.
As I already owned the BS1, the choice was easy. But both are good speakers in there own ways.
Beovision Eclipse gen2 (GX) w/ floorstand, Beolab 14.2, 4 speaker Shape and ATV4/Chromecast.
Beoplay A9mk4 GVA, Beosound 1 GVA, H2, H3, H8, E6, Beoplay EQ
Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.
Well, I made a purchase and thought to post an update:
First, I'd like to note that I would much prefer to give my dealer all the business I can. There were a couple reasons I was unable to do that this time including (a) being unsure if I would like a product I have not heard before--I wouldn't want to make a purchase from the dealer and attempt to return it to him when I could make a purchase from Amazon and return it with zero hassle and zero hard feelings; (b) he doesn't have any non-GVA products currently in stock and I insist on non-GVA--and again, I wouldn't ask that he place a special order for me when I am not sure I even want to keep the product; (c) price--I don't want to pay retail and don't have any negotiating power with my dealer when we're talking about a $1k-2k single "commodity" product sale.
When I purchase my Harmony, I will work with him--undoubtedly. That being said...
I was going to purchase a used BS1 on Amazon in "very good" condition. I waited and the price dropped again (<$1k). Then someone purchased it and I missed out. I took that as a sign and I have just been listening to my A1 instead, which is quite good, I think, alongside my laptop as I work.
Well, today on eBay I found a brand new silver non-GVA Level and I negotiated and bought it for even less than the used BS1 (<$900). At that price, even though I prefer the aesthetics of BS1, have never listened to a Level, would rather use TuneIn than B&O radio and am awaiting the Mozart platform update with Network Link... I couldn't pass up the deal.
I'll post again with listening thoughts when I receive it. Cheers!
Well, I hesitate to (potentially) "out" myself, but I bought that used/VG BS1 on amazon.com. (if you're talking within the last month; it might not have been the only one) ** But it was a snare and delusion: a BS1 generation-1 packaged in a generation-2 box! ** Mis-matched S/N, mismatched Type#. Clearly a previous customer had scammed amazon.com's returns, purchasing a new one and returning their old one as-if. I sent it back instantly. (Also it wasn't absolutely 100% unblemished as the VG-text said, there were minute scratches on the right side, and no power cable.) Because I put a note in with it, amazon can't ignore that they listed gen1 under the gen2 ASIN number, and so it's unclear what they do with it after that... Nothing really wrong with buying a gen1 -- but not if you are expecting a gen2 and want AirPlay2 not AirPlay (1).
Hope your Level will be less hassle -- 900 sure beats amazon.com (1300) and the Gulfstream Park dealer (1500). Bonne chance!
Hi everyone,
I've just spent a day listening to my new Level and in short, it's great. The sound is very strong. It's been a few years since I've listened to BS1 but from what I recall, the Level makes significantly more power and has a stronger low end. I've just wanted to listen to lots of my old favorites and turn the volume up to hear how they sound. Good speakers allow you to hear details you haven't noticed before in songs you know well. Level has done that for me today. I'm pleased with it.
I'm sure had I gotten BS1 I would have been very pleased with that as well. But I'm happy with how things turned on. For my office, Level is a great speaker. It's probably powerful enough to bring into a large kitchen or living room, even. I have the volume at about 45% and it's quite loud as it's sitting right in front of me, behind my laptop. But it's clear and full. I like the sound a lot.
The unit itself is surprisingly heavy. Very stout feeling. It feels quality. Even the touch-sensitive lights atop the unit somehow look very high quality. Not everything made in China is garbage, folks. The Kvadrat wool is very rich feeling but I am waiting for Prestige Creators to put together a "regular oak" cover.
B&O radio is similar enough to TuneIn that I don't mind. Some of the same stations are even available, so that's fine. For simplicity, I'm not sure why there could not have been consistency across the platforms but okay, B&O radio is fine.
Room correction definitely works and produces a noticeably altered sound.
Conspicuously missing is the "alarm" and "timer" function of the non-Mozart platform products such as BS1 and my Core. Come on, B&O, people would love to use these as alarm clocks--where is that functionality?
Those are my thoughts for now! I'm happy with the product and look forward to Network Link like the rest of us Mozart platform users.
Cheers.
Well, it's been about a week with my new Level (which now has the oak grill over the natural aluminum--stunning!) and I thought to post a few impressions:
Level is far, far more powerful than I recall BS1 being. This makes sense as it has literally 2x the 4" drivers plus an additional tweeter and full-range. For anything other than a large, open floor plan greatroom, I have to imagine the Level is absolutely adequate and this makes me think how A9 and Edge must really benefit from bigger rooms in which to breathe. If the Level is this powerful, those speakers (and Balance) must be monsters.
I remember BS1 being very "airy" in the upper range, perhaps moreso than Level, which I attribute to the acoustic lens technology. But audio memory is fallible and in every subjective measure, Level sounds awesome. I think the fullness of the sound, thanks to the "gen 2" 4" woofer is responsible for most of the positive impressions--though it sounds great throughout the entire range.
Level in natural aluminum with the oak grill is gorgeous; I still prefer the "doesn't look like a speaker" aesthetic of BS1 more but the Level is very, very beautiful with the oak grill.
Overall, I think either speaker would be a welcome addition but I believe I am feeling that the Level really, really out-muscles BS1. It seems Level is very much a new generation of B&O products, which, among other things, make very big sound from relatively small drivers (e.g., the Level and Stage's new 4" woofers, the BL28's new 6.5" woofer). It makes me wonder what is next for the BeoLab range in terms of BL17 and BL50.
If I had been able to steal a BS1, I would have gotten it and been very happy, I'm sure. But I happened to be able to steal a Level and for the price, I would not have paid more for a BS1 at this point. While not as attractive an overall design to me versus BS1, Level in silver/oak is gorgeous and with the performance superiority versus BS1, I'm very happy it all worked out this way.
Now, if Mozart software could just have Alarm and Timer functions added...
And Beolink multiroom. Coming soon, or «soon». I’m also waiting for a walnut or smoked oak version. It would be a nice match to my anthracite BS1 :).
Thank you for your detailed description! It helps guys like me/us keep the Level in mind when looking for the next B&O speaker! I do find it a very nice alternative!
Also glad you like your Level! :)

Csaba, talk to Prestige Creators; they're a few months away from having a Level grill but can do smoked oak and walnut. :)
And yes. Where is Multiroom?? Wishlist: Multiroom, Alarm, Timer.
Nice to know they are working on it. Right now I’m trying to lend a bespoke Balance with B&O, but in a while I’d like to have a Level. So there is no rush :). But thanks for the tip, I could have figured it out myself :)).

*land I meant, not lend :).
A bespoke Balance? Tell me more! I know the bespoke programme should launch this month, but I haven't heard anything more specific about it.

I use my Level every day (and BS2's), I rarely use the BS1, which sums up what I think between the Level and BS1!
The great thing about the Level is you can wall-mount and simply grab and move. BS1 feels a bit 'previous generation' to me. Wired, meaning you have to physically disconnect/connect when you move, it often loses the wifi connection etc.
1990: A bespoke Balance? Tell me more! I know the bespoke programme should launch this month, but I haven't heard anything more specific about it.
Well, I have heard about it over the months but I wasn’t aware of the process or if it was available in all countries. At first I was looking for a link on their website or a form of some sort, but through BeoTalk I understood I could just talk to a local dealer. I understand I am in a convenient position since there are two of them where I live. I contacted one of them about the Level, H95 and Balance in order to see if my descriptions of possible interpretations could be manufactured. My dealer forwarded my enquiry to HQ in Denmark where someone in sales checked feasibility, estimated price and estimated production time. First, I wanted to have a pair of H95s following the Anthracite version of the H9 3rd Gen or the current HX, with a long Bang & Olufsen logo according to the Berluti edition. B&O HQ replied that it costs a lot to run a new colour on the H95 (probably meaning one pair), so he had to decline. Regarding the Level I was told that they were struggling to keep up with the demand for the two options already on the market, but he had forwarded my enquiry to the design team for a future consideration. The way I wanted to have the Balance was possible to make for a price halfway between the Gold Tone and the Berluti version. Essentially for the price of an Edge. Slightly higher than what I was told at first, estimated to about 30% more than the regular price. I could also choose if I wanted to have the Balance with or without Google Voice Assistant. I don’t have info regarding delivery time but a few months.
Just an update and a request:
Update--I love my Level. The sound is crazy big, much bigger than I recall BS1 being (although admittedly, this type of memory recall is fuzzy, objectively speaking). I do like the look of BS1 more but the wood/silver Level is undeniably gorgeous. The sound is so, so big. And I feel few people speak of the weight of this thing--it must weigh 2x as much as a BS1! ;) It's surprisingly heavy, which I take as a sign of high quality and construction. Great piece.
Question--Does anyone have the wall mount? How does it work? I can't seem to find photos of the entire thing online. Is it just a long mains cable, essentially?

I assume you’ve seen this one?
https://images.app.goo.gl/saSrYEqcWmxcioaS7
Essentially a similar charging slot, as the one you get your Level with, but wall-mountable? I don’t think it is anything more than that by the look of it.
Yes, thank you my friend, that's about the only close-up I've seen before. I'm most interested in the other end of the cable, which all the company's professional marketing photos coincidentally omit. :)
I'm guessing at the other end is... USB-C for mains power? So it's just a long USB-C cable with a front-facing charging puck on the other end?
I can't tell and was hoping someone would be able to share as I'm curious how one could get this wall-mounted but without a long tail of cable running down to a power outlet closer to the floor.

Thank you for elaborating on your question :). You are totally right about the lack of information. How hard can it be to provide the minimum amount of information? The B&O website has even ommitted the technical specifications for the wall bracket and their focus is on how neat it is. I’ve checked Norwegian reviews and resellers and nobody seems to have shared information on this. Now I won’t be able to sleep until I find out. Or I’ll just have to give up until I drop by my local B&O store. I do think though that you might be right about what one should expect it to be. I can’t even tell how long it is. Not that the charging dock of my Beosound 1 is very aesthetic or flexible… :/ The only thing I know about the wall bracket for the Level is that you can remove the cable from the bracket so if your Level is charged, it can just rest on the bracket without the cable hanging from it. There are stock photos of that though :/.

Although... can anyone figure out how to access these new features? I turned on my Level, opened the B&O app, chose the Level product and... there are no new menu items anywhere to be found.
Anyone have any luck accessing Timer or Alarm on a Mozart product?
Do MOZART based products have a webinterface like the "older" products (M3, M5...) to access all functions without the app?

I have an Emerge, and nothing available there yet. Maybe it will come with the "soon to come" update with multiroom capabilities?
Well, version 3.18.0 of the B&O app for iOS was available to me this morning indicating "Alarms and timers for Beosound Balance, Level, Emerge and BL28; Improved OTA stability for H9 3rd gen; Fixed crash when reading battery level on Beoplay EQ case".
But nothing has changed in the app, as far as I can tell... there are no menus for these items available in my Level product app menu...

Have you checked in the Google Home app?
No. I have a non-GVA Level and I don't otherwise use Google Home. :)
Why do you ask? Is there something of interest in Google Home?
Curly: No. I have a non-GVA Level and I don't otherwise use Google Home. :) Why do you ask? Is there something of interest in Google Home?
Oh I assumed the alarm & timer feature was related to GVA products.
I'm not sure I understand why you'd assume that but I know nothing about Google Home. :)
I'm under the impression that since the non-Mozart products such as BS1 and Core have built-in Timer and Alarm functions, the Mozart products should--and now will-- have the same. Whether they are GVA or non-GVA shouldn't matter, IMHO. It would seem strange for B&O to release such basic functionality in only one but not both. Crossing my fingers!
B&O customer support emailed me today requesting screenshots of my menus. Apparently, ALARM is supposed to be immediately visible in the menu once you select LEVEL from your product list.
This is not the case for me.
Can Level owners verify their software version? I have auto-updates on and my Level software is 1.6.25. My B&O iPhone app is also the latest available 3.18.2.39953.
I just wonder if maybe I haven't received the latest software update for some reason. Thank you!
