Hello all,

As I work through making my father one of his father's day presents (a custom machined bottle opener), I realize something...

B&O has been making one bottle opener for one brand for a long time now. However, with the new kid on the block, B&O Play, I think it is only appropriate that the range has its own bottle opener.

The B&O Play brand needs a trinket (not a cellphone case) for daily use - something with a purpose/function.

So what do you think? Does B&O Play need its own bottle opener? If so what would it look like? If not, what should B&O put in the hands of its Play customers as it walks through the door?

Here is the bottle opener that inspired my thoughts, fresh from the machine shop. It is a lathe turned piece of billet 6061 alu rod with a milled notch then sand blasted to reduce sustained wear.

A great idea! But on the other hand, I can't remember the last time I needed a bottle opener. Beer is in cans, and even wine bottles with a real cork are getting far and between...

Some kind of a kitchen utensil might actually work though. For example, Peugeot makes spice grinders that probably have better reputation than the cars Indifferent

Nice clean design, good work Evan, But aluminum made bottle opener wont last long for a Dane.

Mika: A good beer comes in a bottle, and good wine in a bottle with cork, but the bean counters are at work every where, to the devil with quality, lets save a penny.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Like Soren says, you are drinking the wrong beer! LOL I've never seen cans in my dad's fridge.

Kitchen utensil is a good  category - let's brainstorm! I think spice grinder is a 'miss' though! haha

Yes, material choice did occur to me, but there wasn't any appropriate length of dia of steel round to utilize at the time. That and I have an insane love of aluminum... I can't help but appreciate the look, feel, sound, smell and taste of aluminum... Erm..

The original B&O opener is steel, cast I think.

This prototype will be a good study though. I think I got the size and proportion right. We will see what the user says tomorrow! Gift

You got it Søren! Made in USA!

Now, the only obvious beer choice to test it on should be local. Here is an IPA straight from downtown Columbus OH.

How elegant and industrial Cool

That's beautiful, your dad will be very proud.

Let's keep the trinkets relative to only the main B&O line. B&O play exists more out of necessity than anything else, no real reason to promote it any further.

Very clever! Is the BL1000 naturally born with the ability to open bottles or is that an upgrade?

The Beo4 remote can function as a ideal bottle opener. Remove the battery cover and there is sufficient space below to lock on to a bottle top. Then simply lever open the bottle with the remote.

The Danish design studio Stelton has made a somewhat similar bottle opener, my parents got one as a wedding present in 1988.

Excellent design and very interesting. The thought of using tube occurred to me but the mill vise would have likely crushed it...

I think you did well and your implementation is more elegant as well. I agree that the feel of aluminium is quite special Wink

Hi Evan,

Love the design. Also the solid alu should feel better in the hand than the hollow tube.
Very nicely done.

I considered titanium at one point Devil It would never wear out! Laughing

Would save serious weight over stainless!
