Hello all,
As I work through making my father one of his father's day presents (a custom machined bottle opener), I realize something...
B&O has been making one bottle opener for one brand for a long time now. However, with the new kid on the block, B&O Play, I think it is only appropriate that the range has its own bottle opener.
The B&O Play brand needs a trinket (not a cellphone case) for daily use - something with a purpose/function.
So what do you think? Does B&O Play need its own bottle opener? If so what would it look like? If not, what should B&O put in the hands of its Play customers as it walks through the door?
Here is the bottle opener that inspired my thoughts, fresh from the machine shop. It is a lathe turned piece of billet 6061 alu rod with a milled notch then sand blasted to reduce sustained wear.

Beo4 'til I die!
A great idea! But on the other hand, I can't remember the last time I needed a bottle opener. Beer is in cans, and even wine bottles with a real cork are getting far and between...
Some kind of a kitchen utensil might actually work though. For example, Peugeot makes spice grinders that probably have better reputation than the cars

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.
Nice clean design, good work Evan, But aluminum made bottle opener wont last long for a Dane.
Mika: A good beer comes in a bottle, and good wine in a bottle with cork, but the bean counters are at work every where, to the devil with quality, lets save a penny.
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Like Soren says, you are drinking the wrong beer! LOL I've never seen cans in my dad's fridge.
Kitchen utensil is a good category - let's brainstorm! I think spice grinder is a 'miss' though! haha
BeoBoy68:Congratulations Evan ! A real nice piece of Art ! You should propose it to the new Beo management if It could be produce as BeoPlay bottle opener !
Wow, thank you for the kind remarks!
Maybe I should submit it after all! If I have time this week I'll make a second one then mail it to Struer
Chris Townsend:Is it made in China?

Yes, material choice did occur to me, but there wasn't any appropriate length of dia of steel round to utilize at the time. That and I have an insane love of aluminum... I can't help but appreciate the look, feel, sound, smell and taste of aluminum...
The original B&O opener is steel, cast I think.
This prototype will be a good study though. I think I got the size and proportion right. We will see what the user says tomorrow!
Evan: Chris Townsend:Is it made in China?
The cat said no, authentic OHIO issue
Søren Mexico:authentic OHIO issue
You got it Søren! Made in USA!
Now, the only obvious beer choice to test it on should be local. Here is an IPA straight from downtown Columbus OH.
How elegant and industrial
Ready to ship! See your local B&O store for details.

That's beautiful, your dad will be very proud.
Let's keep the trinkets relative to only the main B&O line. B&O play exists more out of necessity than anything else, no real reason to promote it any further.
Good beoplay toy imho would be some awesome aluminium credit card holder. Cant remember last time I brought cash and all those ugly leather cases...heh maybe :)

I like it. Minamalism, nice and neat.
Very cool opener Evan!
Too long to list....
Evan, i was only being topical
Should be made in Motown.
Dillen: Martin
Very clever! Is the BL1000 naturally born with the ability to open bottles or is that an upgrade?
Ricardo:I like it. Minamalism, nice and neat.
That's exactly what I was going for. Thanks Ricardo!
bayerische: Very cool opener Evan!
Thank you!!

I was only joking with the picture, after all that's why I used a meme!
The Beo4 remote can function as a ideal bottle opener. Remove the battery cover and there is sufficient space below to lock on to a bottle top. Then simply lever open the bottle with the remote.
Further proof if it was ever needed, that the Beo 4 is the best piece of kit B&O make.
Thanks Chris, I agree. I'm actually thinking of publishing a paper on "101 things you can do with a Beo4"!
A new brilliant thread is born
The Danish design studio Stelton has made a somewhat similar bottle opener, my parents got one as a wedding present in 1988.

I'd read it!
Vinyl records, cassettes, open reel, valve amplifiers and film photography.

Excellent design and very interesting. The thought of using tube occurred to me but the mill vise would have likely crushed it...
So beware of copyrights!
Greetings MM
There is a tv - and there is a BV

I think you did well and your implementation is more elegant as well. I agree that the feel of aluminium is quite special
Hi Evan,
Love the design. Also the solid alu should feel better in the hand than the hollow tube.Very nicely done.

sorry, double post.... ugh...
Or use stainless steel for the heavier version...
(for sure aluminum is better - more B&O)

I considered titanium at one point It would never wear out!
Would save serious weight over stainless!
