Chris:

The opening song ' No Aphrodisiac' is really worth a closer look in to the album. Thanks,

Ferdinand reported back on his new speakers in this thread:  http://archivedforum2.beoworld.org/forums/p/10222/97590.aspx#97590

In which he also listed some of his favourite artists (recognising that music, rooms, ears and speakers all combine to make our preferences different):

Personally i find the bass a bit too much compared to mid-range (as an example: snare drum hi/hat could be clearer). Vocals are superb and so are high tones. I listen a lot of '(alternative?) easy listening / folk music'. Eva Cassidy, Diana Krall, Natalie Merchant, Beth Orthon, Tori Amos, Heather Nova, First Aid Kid and more.I listen with loudness off and all settings 'neutral'

So far I have listened to, and bought some tracks from:

  • Natalia Merchant
  • Beth Orton (correct spelling)

I already have Cassidy and Krall - but only one Tori Amos CD, I might have to give her another chance Big Smile

Thanks Frederick !

A+,  for something different:

Sharon Van Etten, Taking Chances

Sylvan Esso, Coffee

Thank You !

My latest technique with these recommendations is to start an iTunes Radio station using the named artist and then listen to the stream.  If it's a good stream I will end up buying a few singles along the way, and if I really like the artist I may loop back and buy the original album.

So Sharon Van Etten lead to a few purchases Yes - thumbs up

However I am not so sure about Sylvan Esso .... and that iTunes radio station drops out .... a strange behaviour that I have ad before and which I think means that the "seed" can't derive enough additional songs to keep the stream going

So I shall return to Sylvan Esso tonight as we have a dinner party planned - and I may ask for a vote Smile

And in terms of this week, most of the early days of my commute was from last week's recommendations ... and towards the back end of the week I started listening to LOTS of classical music - initially the B&O sample CD of Abbado recordings and then a "Top 50 Greatest Pieces of Classical Music" from iTnes that was on a bargain price last weekend.

However I am not so sure about Sylvan Esso

'Heard it initially on the radio in my car and it sounded funky at the time.  Very kitschy, with the video images and woodpecker sound and throwback to the 1960's hit by Tommy James and the Shondells: My Baby Does the Hanky Panky.

Tracking currently:

First Aid Kit: Stay Gold

The War on Drugs: Under the Pressure

Beck: Heart is a Drum

While working on my BC 2000 R to R, listening to John Coltrane, and a lot of other jazz, Coltrane, Blue Train, Lena Horne, Ella F, Papa Bue, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan, all on itunes from the comp. soft and quiet. Love it.

Just annoying what you can forget, about what nice music you have stored.

Just stumpled across a guy called Laith Al-Saadi.

A blues musician and a very skilled one.

Listened to his latest album 'REAL' via Spotify Premium an hour ago - excellent!

If you are into music played live with no processing, overdubs and more, he is the man.

Check out this interview (with a live solo performance):

Søren,

Since you are working on your reel to reel can you tell me why they are SO expensive to repair?

I know this is not a workbench forum and we could move it there, but I thought you might shed some light on this.

I mean I had both my Beocord 8004 and 9000 repaired and it wasn’t too bad for either.

But with a reel to reel basically other than Soundsmiths NO one would touch it let alone fix mine, but they provided estimates from $800 to $4,000. You got that last number right, I have 3 estimates for $4,000.

My Tandberg is in for repair and it is being done by a nice chap who works on it daily in-between the paying jobs, but I have no idea what the bill will be when it’s done.

I mean my deck worked when I took it in, the motor and heads are fine (verified) but it needed a good contact cleaning, lubrication, a dozen solders repaired, and about 20 capacitors replaced.

Jeff

It is called "Genius" and it's on the iTunes Store. I like it because for some tracks it provides the lyrics and for some of the lines there are yellow highlight links that provide someone's interpretation of the lines or a socio/historic interpretation of the words:

Listening to side one of Jack White's Lazaretto LP in the bedroom with an RX2.

"Gee whiz, Rich, why wouldn't you listen to an LP on your best turntable, your BG4002 in the dining room."

I'm glad you asked!  Because apparently Jack White thinks it's cool to press side 1 such that it plays from the inside out.

For the record, that's not cool.

Listening to Miles Davis "Live in Tokyo" and the 3rd cut My Funny Valentine gives true meaning for me to the phrase it was "worth the price of admission" alone. What a beautiful piece. Sam Rivers on sax which apparently was not the plan but Wayne Shorter was not available. Playing a CD through my Beogram 1900 but unfortunately non-B&O speakers that just have a small sound. Great music however and I picked it up new at the local books, CDs and DVD store for $3.99.

I am old enough to marvel at that my younger self would even think it possible that they could be sending a message out about the music they were listening to at the moment and someone in Australia would reply and comment that they had taken the suggestion and were listening to it as well. It is not just about the communication but the access we all have to the same things. Just a bit of magic for me at this moment for one who the telephone and a letter were about it for truly long distance communications.

It is an even smaller world than that - we had dinner last night with a couple next door neighbours who are Italian/Serbo-Croatian/Chilean with an Australian daughter ... and they were talking about the earthquake in Chile ... which we discovered this morning (hence the phone call) was linked to a Californian earthquake which is where our son flew to on Saturday.

It is a very small world - a true global village .....
