Did you know that those A7 "voice of the theatre" were in fact cinema speakers, designed at a time when high power amplifiers were 20 watters?
Yours look fantastic Evan, well done! I know they sound fabulous, but valve only eh!

Hi Evan,
Ya know, your existing coffee table might work as it, but your sofa is flat out too “normal” for those wild speakers of yours.
The sofa and possibly chair that I “envision” would be something out of the fifties that featured pinks, purples, lime green, and of course turquoise. Toss in a contrasting piping and the room would pop!
I once knew a couple whose entire house was done in the fifties motif, nothing was there that wasn’t fifties down to the black metal dial telephone with the cloth covered cord.
You don’t need to go to that extreme but a taste of it would suit your speakers beautifully.
If the fifties aren’t your style, sixties Danish modern could also compliment your speakers. Note I said compliment NOT compete with them. However I don’t think there is a piece of furniture anywhere that could take attention away from those speakers! Not to worry!
Trust me, I know all about budget realities. I now have four receivers that need rebuilding, two are useless, one is “hanging on” and the remaining one threatens to turn itself into an inferno without warning. However the best case round-trip shipping and duty to Denmark is $3,200 for the four and that is before any work is performed. So I don’t use the two, keep my fingers crossed (and the volume moderate) with the third, and have a fire extinguisher ready for the fourth.
Thank God you guys were able to help me get my McIntosh up and running again with a replacement on/off switch.
So check out some of your local antique malls and see what is available and at what cost.

That was something that I discovered during my research for this project. They were widely used in cinemas and other notable venues including Woodstock! They are indeed historically significant pieces of sound reproduction history.
Yes - they are a very efficient design!!! Eventually (post graduation) I'll have a tube setup and power them as God intended.

Good morning Jeff,
Yes, the speakers have an attention commanding hue. Originally, I was going for a period-correct look, i.e gray or black exterior but that was just too sedate for their collegiate setting. And, they are indeed far cries from the original design structurally and acoustically.
One of my roommates is an art major and to say the least he was very surprised and pleased to see my color choice. That same roommate is responsible for my wild coffee table.
The whole house has become slightly obsessed with 'palette art' and we have often talked about doing some furniture to match. This would also definitely take the college chic look to the next level!
I kind of envisioned something like this:
The 50's look is definitely an option - after all the Altecs were designed in that era.
Also, regarding your troubled receivers, I would be happy to help you with repairs. Granted I am very busy these days, I can always find time to assist another B&O faithful. If there is anything I can do, please ask.
Now, on the original topic:
Streaming now is a brilliant track by St. Lucia - Elevate.
Good Morning Evan,
The pictured sofa actually has considerable merit. I like the square lines and the improvised legs. The whole structure looks a bit like Knoll, if instead of Italian chic you were going for the rustic look.
You will find your college chic yet.
Good luck with you Altecs. I am off today to see if I found someone to re-foam my S120.2’s.
Vacation time! Just went today to my favorite store for used records in Mannheim, Germany, "Lautstark Records". Bought "Kenny" by Kenny Rogers, "The World of the Les Humphries Singers" by the Les Humphries Singers, "A Night at the Opera" by Queen, "Purple Rain" performed by Prince (the one of my collection I cannot find any more) and "True Blue" by Madonna.
Right now listening to Kenny Rogers "Green Grass of Home", sitting on our rooftop terrace, a nice Prosecco Aperol in front of me, the dawn setting in and the lights of the town beneath are coming up. I guess, you get the mood .
Kind regards,
Rolf
I've owned a used LP copy of Edgar Winter's They Only Come Out at Night for at least a year, and yesterday I finally got around to listening to it. Side 1 out in the garage, and Side 2 in the bedroom.
Of course I knew "Frankenstein" and "Free Ride," but the rest of the album was pretty good, too. But OH MY GOD. Worst. Album. Cover. EVAR.

Søren,
I am in the same boat. Hallelujah!
It has been a LONG day and I have an interview tomorrow, after two rejections from the same company. (And I thought I was retired.)
So How about Heino: Die Schönsten Volkslieder Der Welt, with my favorite, Űberall.
Or if all else fails, for sheer comfort and relaxation, Heintje Simons: Deine Träume. Mindless Dutch child with ridiculous lyrics, but a delightful voice.

But living most of his life in Sweden, made a lot of folk music with very good lyrics, a lot of this about Swedish history

Maybe, but I Think he prefered his guitar,
In the seventies he was arrested for assault when he discovered that the two Girls that he picked up somewere and invited to his home was everything else but Girls.

Yes, classic story
By way of the iPhone coverage my wife and I started watching the Burberry product video filmed with the 5S ... and discovered a young singer who was doing the background songs ... Misty Miller
Perhaps too young ... 16 !
Dionne Warwick getting funky with Isaac Hayes ' Can't hide love'. Golden era of R&B music. The majority of today's stuff is an absolute utter disgrace, as are the talentless skaffs who can't sing FS.
Very smooth -

Listening to it on LP this morning. Live German TV appearance.
Dionne recently filed for bankruptcy. Where did all the money go? 50 years of working and she doesn't even own a property (probably hidden to avoid the tax department).
Jeff Wayne's Musical Version Of The War Of The Worlds on CD. Followed by Rick Wakeman's Journey To The Center Of The Earth.
I'm afraid I'm recovering from the BeoVirus.
Picked up several cassettes from a used book store today. Currently playing Rolling Stones Flashpoint in the bedroom:
BC4500* -> <cough> Sony STR-DE895 <cough> -> Beovox S40**
*The BC4500 is a great, great deck for playback, a more than adequate deck for recording, absolutely gorgeous, and has the "double bonus" feature of being able to be hung (which is how I have it set up).
**The Beovox S40 are now on my desktop in the bedroom, having replaced my Beovox S45-2***. I did the Mod Podge and Duct Seal mods on the S40 woofers a few months ago (in addition to refoaming them and refubishing the crossovers a couple years ago). The S40 is a fabulous speaker that gets absolutely no attention on this web site.
***The S45-2s have replaced the Beovox M70s in the main system, at least for the time being. The M70s are great with some material, but for whatever reason, I've just never warmed up to them fully. I may part out the M70s and be done with them.
some time ago I grabbed my 45s to tapes, until now 15, 60 min tapes, now playing Little Eve Locomotion BC 5000, BM 5000 (Pizza) through the P45s, I get more and more attached to the P45s. Now playing Leader of the pack.
I absolutely LOVE your choice of music and I will admit I am intrigued by your love affair with your P-45’s.
That said something in me seems to “know” that I would still love my S-45.2’s sans reservation.
ouverture: the S45.2's are a tad bass shy, and too civil at times !
the S45.2's are a tad bass shy, and too civil at times !
You can make the S45-2 more "punchy" by replacing the damping material on the inside. The single easiest mod there is.
Hi Rich,
Appreciation of sound subjective in the extreme, however as a product of my generation I “need” a lot of bass and I don’t find the S-45.2’s in the slightest bit bass shy.
Bring on Donna Summer or Evita Disco Version and they are more than ready to deliver all the punch that I admittedly crave.
Now I am not saying that they have the bass punch of the S-75’s, but the S-45.2 is more accurate in its total reproduction.
That said, the S-75’s have in my opinion been unfairly criticized for being inaccurate….. they aren’t. It is just the little S-45’s are better in this area.
Well, if you're ever bored one afternoon and can spare ten bucks, head on over to the sewing/fabric store and buy one of these. Cut it in half lengthwise. Pull the woofer out of each S45-2, and take out the existing damping material. Slide a half of the foam into each S45-2. Cover all of the inside bottom, then run up the back and into the inside top. Put the woofer back on. Mod done. Save the original damping material and the mod is easily reversible.
Hey Rich,
Looks like a darn good idea and I “might” try it someday, but I just gotta tell ya today, having nothing to do with this posting, I was listening to “Oh Yea” by Yello and there was sufficient bass to move both speakers about an inch off center from their stands.
That’s enough bass for me….. at this precise moment.
Not playing anything, BLACKOUT, running on nobreak, singing I aint seen nothing yet
