From a mechanics point of view, I must say the tangential system is the better, the way the tangential deck work must give lesser strain to the pickup, and therefore I like them more than the radial tracking decks, but my BG 5000 sounds so good, (MMC 4) no clicking noises during start and stop, that is what my TX2 does, click, click and start play, reach end of record and click, return arm and click again, it plays OK with a SMMC4, and sound vise the same as my BG 5000, when I get a BG 4002 or 4 I will invest in a MMC2, just because I want to hear, if I can hear a difference.

In my opinion the most critical point in BGs is the mass moved by the cantilever, you can see the improvements made during the years, from BG 1000 with SP10/14 to to days lighter arms and cartridges, the old types using insulated wires from cartridge to deck, the newer types with thin enameled wires, the tangential arm even thinner than the radials, and this just to bring down the mass to be moved. So, if only thinking about weight  the tangential must be better.

Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.

Hi Søren,

Sorry my friend, but if you wish to try a Beogram 4002/4004 you will need to try a MMC20CL, which is outstanding.

If you are intent, for whatever reason to have a MMC2 which I have and like VERY much, you will need to go to the Beogram 8002.

Know too that these cartridges degrade over time…. but not evenly. My Beogram 4000 has an old “replaced” MMC20CL from my first Beogram 4002 and it out-performs (ever so slightly) the MMC2 on my Beogram 8002.

Soundsmiths cartridges negate this issue, but with a staggering cost.

In any case, I know you will be pleased.

Jeff

Of course Jeff I was writing without thinking 20 CL it is, and I think the MMC20s are better made than MMC1-5 seams like the suspension last longer in the 20 line

While I can offer no tangible proof, I have had remarkable results with the MMC20CL. Apparently they last far longer than their designers ever dreamed.

A word of caution; avoid the MMC6000, while a truly superb cartridge, similar in many ways to the MMC20CL, yet with the unique quality of being the world’s best record cleaner courtesy of Bang & Olufsen.  All you can EVER hope for is three plays without vigorously cleaning the stylus. This get very old and fast.

Following certain people's recommendations in a thread, blog and youtube I am listening to the lady on spottily (MacMini - HDMI - BV8-40 - BL3, BL9)

In particular the "record"/CD that Geoff Martin was moved to comment on

Frank Sinatra style on Jazzradio.com my favourite channel.
puts a cozy feeling to late nights.

there are 40 different style jazz channels and the pay version gives 256kbyte  mp3 quality.
The audio is of course processed by broadcast limiters, but actually very with very soft settings.

Recommend for those that like jazz .

My re-capped M75 are my precious diamonds.

An oldie but goodie...from my stereo store/record store days in college:

Chick Corea and Return To Forever - Romantic Warrior

Great album...this was when Return to Forever was Chick Corea, Al DiMeola, Lenny White, and Stanley Clarke.

Hi Jeff,

You've just reminded me to revisit a Chick Corea CD put out by ECM as part of their Rarum collection.

Sometime Ago/la Fiesta/ Desert Air/ What Game Shall We Play Today/ Tweek/ Mirror Mirror/ Trio Imp1/ TI 3/ Rhythm A Ning/ Eronel/ Think of One/ I Hear a Rhapsody/ Summer Night/ Night & Day.

The Rarum Collection is of artists who have picked what they think is their best/ most representative work. It tends to be a real mixture of styles.

Bit late now but I'll give it a spin tomorrow.

Graham

Those first two (Sometime Ago and La Fiesta) are from Return to Forever version  recorded March 73. Listed artists for that particular recording are Chick Corea, Joe Farrell, Flora Purin, Stanley Clarke and Airto Moriera.

Just playing now via the BV11, having misplaced my remote for the Brennan.

The Rarum collection sounds interesting, what a concept, ask the artist what they think their important works are! Unprecedented! Stick out tongue I think that's a great concept for an album. I will have to check out the Chick Corea one for sure.

I saw him perform once back in the 70's, it still sticks in my mind as the most impressive and breathtaking concert I've ever seen. It was in a small venue, an old movie theater that had been converted into a place for movies, concerts, plays. I had front row to the left a bit seats, right in front of his piano and keyboards. Mind blowing. He was performing with Gayle Moran who was often his female vocalist of choice back then. He came out and performed a non-stop 36 minute encore. Started out with simple acoustic piano, and evolved into a full blown, wide open, pull all the stops out fusion jazz improvisation riff. I just sat there completely blown away and enthralled. Amazing artist.

That is one serious calf muscle there.

Yesterday I was working on a project in the dining room most of the day and listened to Dukes of Stratosphear Psonic Psunspt LP twice straight through.  I hardly ever listen to anything twice a month let along twice straight through.

For the unitiated, Dukes of Stratosphear is XTC's psychedelic alter ego.

Yesterday it dawned on me for the first time that Side 2 owes just as much to surf music guitar and Beach Boys harmonies than anything else.

Anyway - Dukes of Stratosphear Psonic Psunspot comes with my highest recommendation.

Playing ... well, using !

I came across this link and "bought" this free iApp http://www.macrumors.com/2014/01/28/rap-genius-ios/

which plays my iDevice library (and I think my iCloud) and enriches the experience by providing background notes to the album, and what I love the lyrics of the song, and even better an interpretation or commentary on the key phrases in the lyrics.

I spent most of yesterday's commute listening to Mitchell's "A Case of You" and reading the interpretations that it is about Mitchell/Cohen's relationship, which led me to revisit "Everybody knows" and its notes led me to purchase "The Partisan".

So not the iApp to use for laid-back listening, however. for illuminating the inner poet in you, it is something that I yearned for,

Downsides, I have already spotted one typo, so I suspect low quality curation, and there is no scrobbling to Last.FM (I had lately being using Scrobbler for iOS (http://www.last.fm/hardware/ios) (or Android Devil) rather than the iDevice's native player because it did that and provided links of Last.FM's cover notes and artists bios).

Apple launched its iRadio in Australia yesterday - so I am testing it's selection via the ATV and the iPhone.

As I use the iTunes Match service I am not subject to ads - a plus over Spotify where I would have to pay a monthly fee.

So far the interface appears simpler to use - and we have listened to curated "stations" - Love Songs (warming up for Valentine's Day Smile) and the only Classical "station".

I have also started to personal "stations":

a) based on Erin Bode's "The Pines", and

b) based on Katie Melua

I am certainly coming across artists and tracks I have never heard before e.g. right now "I belong to you" (Il ritmo della passion) by Eris Ramazzotti !

And I have jumped ahead of my iPhone's daily download allowance -- the product of taking a listening walk at lunch time !

So far I have not been tempted into an spontaneous purchase ....

So I tried Astrud instead Smile and received this stream of tracks ...

Today I finished a 12 day continuous work of big machine repairs, I am totally shot, to old for this kind of work. But what is better to wind down and relax than Norah Jones, nearly forgot that I bought this nice vinyl record, with a cuba in my hand (not the last one tonight) just enjoying how my TX2 do the work.

Road Song - Wes Montgomery ... He is a hometown hero for me.

In 1965 Mr. Montgomery toured Europe while in the netherlands he did a gig for Dutch TV with none other than the remarkable Pim Jacobs. It is truly fascinating to watch how these two maestro's of Jazz who were from worlds apart, had only just met, had barely any time working togther could develop a chemistry in front of the camera.

Elvis Costello is still going strong (stronger than ever, I think).

He is - imo - one of the most innovative and dedicated guys in the rock-scene.

Constantly making new albums - often with lots of good 'colleagues'.

He will be in Denmark this autum giving a concert - gotta go there Smile

Just have a look at his 'Spectacle' tv shows - marvelous!.

My first Elvis concert was in 1978. He was playing with a group of other punkers - new wavers. Nick Lowe, Mink DeVille and a few others. the last time I saw him was in 2003.

Think the ticket for the 1st show cost me $3 and was at the Indiana Theatre in downtown Indy.

I was an Elvis fan from "My Aim Is True" on forward.

Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor with E Power Biggs on my Tandberg 9000X reel to reel. Amazing, absolutely enthralling. This from a marvelous CBS Columbia vinyl recording, a 35 year old recording sounding as true to life as sitting in the audience of the theater.

The Tandberg has never seen a repair bench yet what it still can deliver impresses.
