Hello everyone

I recently read about people using an amplifier between their sound source and the H6 earphones.

I have just bought a black pair and will be using then with an iPhone using Spotify. I don't want louder music just better quality at a lower volume. I remember folks on here using a DAC that helps this.

Totally ignorant about any of these devices,so please explain in a manner as if you were addressing a small child.

Thank you

Hi Chris,

with the 30-pin connector of the iDevices you had/have the possibility to bypass the DAC in the e.g. IPhone.

This way you could get a digital signal out of the iPhone and into a (better) external DAC - resulting in a better sound.

In some way or another this always has to be combined with a headphoneamp - not to make it louder, but simply to amplifiy the signal.

Portable (battery-driven) DAC's though are rare, expensive and unpractical, and surely not the best solution for most people.

------With the new Lightning connwctor it seems to be different, and I don't know of any external (portable) DAC-solution to be used with the new connector.------

There are other - smaller - devices that can amplify the (analog) line-signal from the 30-pin connector.

With my older iDevices I use a FiiO E01.  In my opinion (in my hearing) it gives me a better and clearer sound and lets me control the volume as well.

But your question was - as I understood it - more about the quality of the sound.

More about differences of the inside-DAC and a (possible) external DAC.

For desktop-use there are other solutions in all price (and quality?) ranges.

Hope this helps.

Greetings Millemissen

This looks good.

Although not entirely a positive review, i found it very helpful in respect to getting the best of the H6.

Would using a Lumigon T2 phone improve the audio with Spotify? B&O allegedly helped with the sound!

Chris I have heard in the IFA Berlin the new Sony PHA-2 portable DAC. It sounds amazing ! Really cool ! Not available yet on the European market.

Thanks, I'll take a look. Listening to them through a mini IPad and there already a big improvement over my iphone. A nice solid sound at about 60% volume, as opposed to the 85-90% on the iphone.

A level I'm keen to avoid.

I have just read a review on the PHA-1 and it did not suggest using that model for I devices as it was optimised for the Sony series, and thus made little difference.

Am not sure why listening to the H6 on the mini IPad is better, but is it is noticeably so. The people of Northumberland will be fortunately spared the sight of me walking about with "cans" on!

I would also consider listening to lossless music over lossy. I'm not sure a higher definition reproduction is a good thing if the source material is poor enough quality!

Ban boring signatures!

Yes I have considered that, but am stuck with Spotify at the moment and generally very happy with it. Just trying to see if it can be improved.

Get Mrs Puncher an H6 brochure around Xmas time, you won't regret it. Not that you do Xmas of course cough grrr
