Hi Chris,
with the 30-pin connector of the iDevices you had/have the possibility to bypass the DAC in the e.g. IPhone.
This way you could get a digital signal out of the iPhone and into a (better) external DAC - resulting in a better sound.
In some way or another this always has to be combined with a headphoneamp - not to make it louder, but simply to amplifiy the signal.
Portable (battery-driven) DAC's though are rare, expensive and unpractical, and surely not the best solution for most people.
------With the new Lightning connwctor it seems to be different, and I don't know of any external (portable) DAC-solution to be used with the new connector.------
There are other - smaller - devices that can amplify the (analog) line-signal from the 30-pin connector.
With my older iDevices I use a FiiO E01. In my opinion (in my hearing) it gives me a better and clearer sound and lets me control the volume as well.

But your question was - as I understood it - more about the quality of the sound.
More about differences of the inside-DAC and a (possible) external DAC.
For desktop-use there are other solutions in all price (and quality?) ranges.
Hope this helps.

Although not entirely a positive review, i found it very helpful in respect to getting the best of the H6.

Would using a Lumigon T2 phone improve the audio with Spotify? B&O allegedly helped with the sound!

I would also consider listening to lossless music over lossy. I'm not sure a higher definition reproduction is a good thing if the source material is poor enough quality!
Ban boring signatures!
