I have a 5000 and my Dad has a 5500, they are fine cassette players, but is there a proper way to clean them. When I had a Sony deck years ago there was a "cleaning mode" button, and this made cleaning the capstans, heads and pinch rollers much easier, it is not the end of the world, I was just looking for advice as there does not seem a lot to clean when you look inside the Beocord !

nb.

am still using cotton buds and 91% Isopropyl on the advice of a B&O shop about 20 years ago just dabbing what I can visibly see

nbb

fortunately we do not have to worry about demagnetising heads, as all Beocords (except I believe a few in the early seventies) demagnetize themselves when turned off, a good enough reason to turn off the complete system 2 or 3 times a year :-)

I use Q-tips dampened with rubbing alcohol (which is 70% isoprpyl) in conjunction with one of these.   And don't use alcohol on the pinch rollers - it will dry them out.

Beocord 5500; Hold stop while pressing play and the heads etc. will engage without a tape loaded.
Pressing turn will switch direction, allowing you to easily clean both pressure rollers.
Press stop when done.

Hi everybody,

since I'm one of those still using Beocords, I'd like to jump in. Which type of IPA is best to use? 70%? 100%? Does your "trick" only work with the Beocord 5500, or with the Beocord 7000 as well? I'll have to clean my 7000 soon and don't want to make any mistakes.

Thanks!

Kai

Thank you for the tip Martin!

It works on 5500 and 6500. Just checked.

thanks Martin, that is great

NB. only use 91% or 100% was the B&O advice, because any less than that and you have too much water content and that is the last thing you want in splashing around in your deck, with 91% it practically dries as you clean with the tips

Kai, use 91 or 100 IPA
