Yes, but this Essence box isn't visually any better and this is only a controller. Basically, £615 for a controller, no? I don't think I'd give up my PM for that (at this stage). Maybe I'm missing something here! Sell it to me :)

I want the 'hideaway' box with an ir-eye connected to it - to control it with my Beo4, that is always present on the table anyway.

And a dedicated 'new app-iPad'.

No need for the 'knob' - although that should be good for new costumers without a Beo4 in the house.

There is a tv - and there is a BV

Overall it seems like a product they should make, with the usual strange B&O shortcomings like only one aux input etc.

Is it safe to assume that the NL part of this is the ethernet connection possibly to one's home router?

Hmm. B&O just wrote on their Facebook page:

Essence is not connected via NetworkLink or MasterLink - its connectivity is rather based on the mobile ecosystems such as Airplay, DLNA and music services. Best regards, the Bang & Olufsen Social Media Team

So no NL on this on… can we assume that they ail bring another audio product on the marked, which are more "high end"?

I think its a little hard for some of us to get our heads round it, as we stream etc to a TV which is our "hub". This in turn talks to our speakers. The Beovision 7/11 is an example.

If I imagine being sat in front of some Beolab 9's, that are then connected to a Playmaker/Essence with music being streamed and controlled by my Ipad/Phone etc, where does this stop/start/forward/reverse thing come into it?

Does it just replace the Beo 4 as a interface to control the streaming etc?

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.

[Simply? Two large grey boxes, just to play some music? :) Then the controller and something to locate the music. I'm not sure that's simple. The boxes need to be hidden somewhere too.

Have you seen the Transmitter 1 in real life yet? It is rather small itself, and if I'm judging the size right on the website the Essence brain will fit right on top of the it. Besides having it built in, connecting a single RJ cable between the two is as easy/good as it gets. I think you are the target user for it despite it not having integrated WISA yet.

Ah, you know... A little B&O here, a little there

Exactly. Think of it as the same Go button interface on the Beo 4.

The NL you are referring to is indeed an ethernet connection for internet, not a NL connection as we think of it.

Um. Why not just use the Go button on a Beo4? I'm reminded of the disaster of the Beo1 remote. Can this audio product even respond to traditional B&O IR commands from existing remotes? I'm rather disturbed by how B&O seems to be giving attention to stand-alone products (e.g., the BeoSound 5 Encore) rather than focusing on the benefits of a linked home network that has made B&O truly remarkable. My hope is that the forthcoming BeoMusic App will also control the BeoSound 5. I can't see any technical reason why the new app shouldn't be able to add functionality to B&O's flagship audio master.

Congrats to the new designer: Frackenpohl Poulheim.

The remote is very small and elegant. It can take place easily.

Really nice name either... BeoSound Essence... Love it.   Smile

Wired. If you want wireless connection between the BeoSound Essence and your speakers (featuring Immac- ulate Wireless Sound i.e. BeoLab 17 or BeoLab 18): Just add BeoLab Transmitter 1 to your setup.

I wonder why they couldn't build the Transmitter in to the control box? I'm confused! What does this Essence do, then? You'd still need an iPad or computer to locate the music you want to play, anyhow, surely?

Because if you want the Airplay and Spotify Connect logos on your packaging you cannot digitally (and wirelessly in the case of Airplay) repeat the signal once it has been accepted by a receiver.  This is also why Spotify on a V1/V11 cannot be accessed as a link room source.  Airplay and Spotify aren't meant to be multi room sources accessible natively (key word there is natively ... ie. it's different if say an Apple TV is going in to an A/V receiver to a multi zone distribution amp, or if an output from a Playmaker is connected to the Aux of a BeoSound) from a single component.

Hmmm " there's a separate box that can remain hidden in a cabinet and connects to the controller via low-energy Bluetooth "

Wonder what batteries the "remote" has, and how one replaces them ??

More positively, " so-called table-top option tacks on an additional $200. Despite showing off a smattering of color options for the back plate here in Vegas, we're told only the dark grey option will be available at launch -- which is a bummer, because the wood grain looks really nice ", love it !

Seems this thread is broken in such a fashion that inline pictures don't work ... here are the direct links to the wooden base plate for the "remote"

http://www.engadget.com/gallery/b-and-o-essence-hands-on/#!slide=2137233 <= start of wooden base plate in carousel

The upshot of this announcement is I might stop my holiday "work" on my system ... I had been trying to integrate Plex's new Home Theatre with LinkPlayer II and Spotify !  As someone said above, this changes the question of one's entertainment hub (potentially) away from the BV focus of LinkPlayer and/or the ATV ....

Yes, pretty much spot on. Which is why I asked for someone to 'sell' it to me as a PlayMaker owner. I'd have to pay £610 for a Beo4 replacement, effectively, as I hide the PM box and control via the Beo4.

Don't get me wrong, this *is* effectively a better PlayMaker with controller, but as I'd have to buy a Transmitter 1 on top, then find somewhere big enough to hide both boxes, effectively I'm being asked for nearly £1K to control my own B&O speakers.

It's also a very simple controller. Play, next track etc. You still need an iPad/iPhone/computer to find and select your music.

The display on the oics is just an Ipad in a selfmade frame to demonstrate the product.

This may have been posted before, so apologies if it has - but here's the press release I got sent this morning...

____________

Good morning,

Bang & Olufsen at CES has announced the launch of 4 products including the rebirth of the Form 2 headphones –  Form2i and a gold edition of the popular BeoPlay H3 earphones.

The company also introduces a new sound system - BeoSound Essence. With one touch, premium sound quality enters the room using the new remote. Change the track or volume level all by just lifting a finger. A hideaway box that connects to the music device is controlled by the remote, offering easy listening in every way.

Finally, following the launch of Bang & Olufsen’s first wireless speakers using the new WiSA standard technology in late 2013, Bang & Olufsen is launching a WiSA compatible transmitter receiver set - BeoLab Receiver 1 - that enables wireless connection between any Bang & Olufsen sound system or television and practically all of its broad range of active speakers.

Please find the press releases for all 4 products below, along with prices. For images please contact me or access the media centre http://mediacenter.bang-olufsen.dk. If you are a first-time visitor, please follow the instructions and register as a new user.

Best wishes,

Jules

MORE//:

Listening to music is now as easy as turning on the lights. Bang & Olufsen launches a luxuriously simple new sound system.

Bang & Olufsen announces the launch of BeoSound Essence – a new sound system offering the simplest way yet to add more music to your life –just by one touch.

The conflict of opportunities

Most of the digital music that we can access from cloud-based music services or have stored on our phones and tablets stays there. We’re often too busy to find it, turn on the sound system and connect. So we never really listen to anything new or as much as we would like to because it gets too complicated.

A game changer

BeoSound Essence changes the game. Now, one touch, and one touch only, is all it takes to start enjoying more of your favourite music in premium quality – every day.

The latest launch from Bang & Olufsen is a radically simple approach to accessing the ever-expanding panoply of digital music possibilities, whether they’re in the cloud, on your computer, NAS, mobile phone or tablet.

Place a BeoSound Essence Remote wherever it’s convenient, for example on the wall next to the light switch, and start listening to your favourite music when you walk into the room. Or put another one next to your toaster to add wake-up tunes to your morning menu. A simple touch is all it takes. Another touch lets you skip between playlist tracks or internet radio stations. You can also mute the music and adjust the volume - and that’s it.

It’s all about access

Over the last couple of years Bang & Olufsen has made significant investment to map out how people live with digital music and how music consumption has changed since the arrival of digital music and streaming services. In addition to conducting ethnographic and behavioural research projects in Europe, China and the US, Bang & Olufsen’s annual Innovation Camp dedicated to conceptual design and development of innovative products, has been leveraged to pioneer new innovation within sound and design.

“BeoSound Essence is all about giving people easy access to their favourite music in Bang & Olufsen quality,” explains Bang & Olufsen CEO Tue Mantoni. “By applying our behavioural and ethnographic studies of how people live and live with music we have developed the simplest user interface available in the market for people who do not accept a compromise in terms of quality and performance.  BeoSound Essence builds on Bang & Olufsen’s heritage of understanding user behaviour and technology and breaking new ground to make things simple”.

The BeoSound Essence sound system consists of two components: an aluminium BeoSound Essence Remote with true Bang & Olufsen touch and movement, and a hide-away box that contains everything you don’t need to worry about to make the magic happen. The box is the centre for AirPlay streaming, DLNA streaming, Spotify Connect, QPlay and thousands of global internet radio stations.

The Bang & Olufsen sound

Combine the BeoSound Essence sound system with any pair of Bang & Olufsen active speakers and achieve an outstanding acoustic experience that is instantly accessible now – and ready for the future

BeoMusic App

In connection with the launch of BeoSound Essence, Bang & Olufsen also introduce the BeoMusic app, which makes it easy controlling the music from both iOS and Android devices. The App is the perfect companion for intuitively browsing and playing music from the mobile, PC or NAS device, as well as accessing global internet radio stations.

Availability and pricing

BeoSound Essence will be available at Bang & Olufsen stores worldwide this spring. Recommended retail price: £695 for a sound system consisting of a wall-mounted BeoSound Essence Remote and hide-away box, and £130 for additional wall-mounted or table top BeoSound Essence Remotes.

Discover BeoSound Essence at bang-olufsen.com/essence.

Note: AirPlay pending final certification.

Rebirth of a design classic! Celebrating 30 years of the iconic and timeless

Form 2 headphones.

The longest living headphones on the market, Form 2 from B&O PLAY updated with microphone, 3-button remote and improved comfort – and aptly renamed Form 2i.

Form 2i is an ultra-light and stylish on-ear headphone with an impressive and honest stereo sound. Today’s introduction builds upon the popularity of its predecessor - plus the fact that it is part of the permanent collection at Museum of Modern Art in New York and widely recognized as a truly iconic piece of design.

ALWAYS IN FASHION

Back in 1983 Steve McGugan, by then a 23-year old Canadian industrial designer, designed what would become one of the most popular headphones ever – Form 2.

Today, more than 30 years after McGugan did his first sketches and 3D cardboard models, Form 2 receives a welcomed update with the addition of in-line microphone, 3-button remote and improved comfort design.

Form 2i – as it is called now – will be available in a total of 6 vibrant and everlasting colors: Black, White and Red – joined by the new additions Blue, Green and Grey.

Originally conceived as a stylish, portable and sleek alternative to the other headphones that were on the market back in the Walkman days of the 80s – this trendsetting headphone has managed to stay relevant through a period of time where consumer electronics were something you’d change every so often.

Keeping the design aesthetics simple and streamlined – and the weight down to an astoundingly low 90g - has ensured the timelessness and iconic status of Form 2 – and with the updates presented today it is the intention of B&O PLAY by Bang & Olufsen to build upon than popularity for the next 30 years.

SOUNDS AS GREAT AS EVER

The sound profile is the same as back in the days: Authentic and clean – bringing you sound the way the artists intended it – with no tweaks or over-emphasized bass.

The soundstage of Form 2i is well-defined – it’s a combination of a good bass, a focused middle and precise highs.

AN EVEN BETTER FIT

Form 2i weighs in at only 90 grams – making it ultra-light and perfectly suited for a life on the go.

The improved foam on the ear pads guarantees an even better comfort – and when you combine that with the weight and ergonomics of the headphones you get a piece of audio equipment you can use comfortably for extended periods of time.

PRICING

Form 2i will be priced at £109

Available at Bang & Olufsen stores, the B&O PLAY online store (www.beoplay.com) and selected design and department stores from February 2014.

ABOUT B&O PLAY:

Bang & Olufsen delivers premium wireless sound to even more speakers

First Bang & Olufsen launched the world’s first wireless speakers using the new WiSA standard. Now, the Danish sound crafters are launching a WiSA compatible transmitter/receiver set that enables wireless connection between any Bang & Olufsen sound system or television and practically all of its broad range of active speakers. The launch demonstrates Bang & Olufsen’s commitment to ensure that also existing customers can add new exciting technology and features to their Bang & Olufsen equipment. Wireless surround sound just got serious – and now sounds seriously good – across an unprecedented range of Bang & Olufsen products.

2014 International CES, Las Vegas, 7 January 2014

With the launch of BeoLab Transmitter 1 and BeoLab Receiver 1, Bang & Olufsen offers sound fans the option of transforming practically any Bang & Olufsen speaker into a wireless acoustic powerhouse. The transmitter connects easily to any Bang & Olufsen television or sound system, and the receivers connect to Bang & Olufsen speakers no matter where in the room you want to place them.

Immaculate Wireless Sound

According to Lars Fredsgaard, Category Director for speakers, the transmitter/receiver launch further confirms Bang & Olufsen’s commitment to high-end wireless surround sound. “BeoLab Transmitter 1 and BeoLab Receiver 1 extend our Immaculate Wireless Sound capabilities to most Bang & Olufsen equipment users might already have,” he explains. “Now, adding extra speakers or a subwoofer to create an amazing surround system no longer requires running wires all over the room. And setting up a wireless sound system with existing equipment has never been easier.”

Sound that is reproduced as the artist intended it to be has long been a Bang & Olufsen hallmark. With Immaculate Wireless sound, Bang & Olufsen brings this tradition of acoustic authenticity into the wireless age.

WiSA – the new wireless standard

The Wireless Speaker and Sound Association (WiSA) platform utilizes the relatively uncongested 5.2–5.8 GHz range to avoid interference from other signals, and to provide enough bandwidth to stream 24-bit, uncompressed music at native sampling rates. WiSA is the first wireless system in the U-NII band that provides multi-channel performance – up to a full 7.1 surround configuration.

BeoLab Transmitter 1 and BeoLab Receiver 1 run on the WiSA standard to allow wireless connection between Bang & Olufsen components in the same room. The receiver works with all Bang & Olufsen active speakers with the exception of BeoLab 5.

BeoLab Transmitter 1 is now available at Bang & Olufsen stores worldwide priced at £345.

BeoLab Receiver 1 will be available at Bang & Olufsen stores worldwide during the month of February priced at £165.

Travel in style with the Golden Edition of BeoPlay H3

BeoPlay H3, the popular in-ear headphone from B&O PLAY by Bang & Olufsen, just got updated with a touch of golden colours. The sleek and comfortable headphone is now available in 4 colours - introduced today is the Golden Edition that joins the already existing Black, Silver and Red Editions.

Gold is – and always will be in vogue. For centuries gold has been sought after, held dear and treasured because of its everlasting elegance and the glamour associated with it.

With today’s introduction of a Golden Edition BeoPlay H3 the Danish design and audio pioneers from B&O PLAY by Bang & Olufsen now offer another stylish and expressive way of enjoying high-end sound on-the-go.

The golden colour gives you warmth and combined with the black housing and cord on the in-ear headphone the overall look and feel represents a timeless, alluring expression and quality that complements almost every outfit and suits any purpose.

LOOKS AND FEELS GREAT

BeoPlay H3 embodies the design and product philosophy of B&O PLAY – it’s elegant and well-crafted – it’s simple to both look at and use in your daily life – and it offers a best-in-class comfort that makes it a pleasure to use these in-ear headphones even for longer periods of time – something seldom seen with this type of headphones.

To ensure a both tight and comfortable fit, significant studies in the shapes and curves of the human were carried out to obtain the geometry most suitable. Super soft rubber ear buds in different sizes are included with the headphones to guarantee a near-perfect fit for almost any shape and size of ear out there.

SOUNDS BETTER

And then there’s the sound – BeoPlay H3 embraces the signature sound of the entire Bang & Olufsen family – a sound profile characterized by its authenticity and clean structure, designed to bring you music the way the artists intended to – with no tweaks or over-emphasized bass.

BeoPlay H3 includes a dynamic full tone sound design integrating a custom-designed 10.8 mm driver that provides a surprising sound performance for a headphone its size. The acoustic design includes a miniature bass port in an internal cabinet, which provides you with great performance in the low frequencies. The precision-drilled holes in the metal housing function as air vents, for when the driver is moving and the music is playing - but the design was made so you get minimal sound leakage both in and out - resulting in an exceptionally natural sound reproduction.

MADE TO USE

BeoPlay H3 is crafted from light-weight metal which makes it both incredibly robust and scratch-resistant - and last but not least makes it ultra-light and the perfect companion for people who are on the move.

The in-line remote and microphone gives you the ability to control your device right from the cord which ensures an optimal ease-of-use and flexibility.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

BeoPlay H3 was designed by Jakob Wagner, a Danish industrial designer, known for his exciting, vibrant and dynamic designs – and his ability to never compromise on quality and function.

I have a couple of pairs of Form 2's and love them, but I'm a bit disappointed there isn't a brand new version of them.

Beosound Stage, Beovision 8-40, Beolit 20, Beosound Explore.

Hello..

With the new audio product i have one question..

If i connect 2 new Essence in my house, Will it be possible to use one Spotify account, and listen to different music in those 2 rooms? Anyone knows??

I have today Sonos connected like this, and it works fine... So i hope it also will work with the new B&O Essence..

I have a Premium Spotify account and get cut off when my wife logs on. Saying that you can save the music to a device, and then stream from another.

Then i'll ask...

Why have they made this product??

They want us to listen to music in the cloud, then at the same time deliver a product that makes you listen to Spotify in turn, or you have to have a lot of Spotify Premium accounts for me, my wife and the kids..??

Why can't they just do it simple, and not deliver a half finished product.. Just my thoughts..

The question about 'sharing' the Spotify account (with your wife, kids and neighbours), you will have to ask Spotify!

The actual Essence product does what is possible now - if Spotify ever changes to a 'multiuser' service, it would support that too, I guess.

Mormann, nobody said this product couldn't do it... because it's not even released.

That said, as I have developed a product that can play Spotify music, I can tell you that the limit is imposed by Spotify. Spotify simply stops streaming music to a device as soon as another device connects using the same account.

If this limit wasn't there, you could get one account and then give the connection details to all your family, friends, work colleague...

The 'hideqway box' has "2 X Power Link sockets (RJ45) with two channels in each for connection of speakers."

Does that mean that we can use two set of speaker in two rooms?

Or - perhaps - use one set in the kitchen and run the other PL as 'line-out' to an A-AUX-in on the ML-audiosystem (like you can with the Playmaker).

Or even run that second output to a 'line-in' of a BV in the livingroom to listen to it there (on the connected BL's).

Just some thoughts.

So is this just an Apple TV without the TV part then?  Or essentially a glorified Airport Express with B&O connectivity.  With Spotify on most of their TV products now I am still a bit lost as to where this fits.  As has been written before, to move around your music you still need an iPad or equivalent, so adding another remote doesn't make it any simpler, it just adds more complexity to most set ups.  It's a bit lost on me I am afraid.

And - if the (for future use) ir-port is for an 'ir-eye' to control it with a Beo4, you could have 'the knob' on the wall in the kitchen and the 'ir-eye' with the Beo4 in another room to control it.

Okay.. I understand that it is limited by Spotify, but my thoughts were if it works on Sonos why not B&O.

But of course maby this will be clearer when the new app comes out and you registrer the Spotify account and make different sone/rooms with the new Essence and play it all from the app.. I wish :)

But it is nice to follow B&O on their path for 2014..

Well, it is hard to make a simple controller that also enables you to maintain your music collection. The idea behind it is that you set up your music on your tablet or PC (NAS, Spotify) every once in a while and then use Essence to start your music at one touch when you want to listen. This is definitely not for those who change a song or album after each listen.
With Essence you start your music and then it plays, much like a radio.
