Hello everyone!
This afternoon I'm picking up a pair of mint M70's with trumpet stands locally.
Anything I should know about those before parting with my money?
Thanks!
Jacques
There are two pairs with stands actually. Yes really. Not a joke.
no specific advise but do not be surprised if stands are ligher than you thought. I was surprised when I get mine ;).
I love them but I think theses stands will be even better if heavier !
congrat !
At home!
These are HUGE speakers! Along with the steel supports the stands ARE heavy. Serial: 1311023, both speakers.
They dwarf the MC120s!
Back at the shop they sounded bass heavy on the midi system they were tested on. At home, they sound well-balanced: the bass is just here when needed. I'm testing on a Beomaster 6000 (80s). The stereo is very good too! And all that before doing anything on them!
Katie Melua: Piece by Piece.
Boy do they sound good. Deep, deep bass, crystal-clear voice. What a moving song!
They sound much like the MC120-2, but with BASS!
Pictures at an Exhibition, Pogorelich. That piano is fantastic! What a CD!
Whan the recording contains no bass, they have an almost electrostatic quality...
And boy does the Beogram CD50 sound good too... But that I already knew!
beautiful ;) ! Happy you love them ! The trumpets are lights but with the steel stand, they are much more heavy (but, in my view, not as heavy as knoll chairs for example)
Yes they are huge (I gave them to my mother because they were too huge for my parisian appartment :( ) ! One day, I will get them back ;).
Enjoy
Jacquesboo: Enjoy
I am thoroughly doing so! At the moment, The Wall.
I never thought of my M70s as huge. Mine have been retired for several months now. There really is only one place in my house to put them, and I'm using S45-2s in that system at the moment.
If you ever need a spare driver, I parted out a second pair I had with cabinets I couldn't save.
Martin recommends the epoxy fix on the phase link magnets.
Cool you have the trumpet stands. 2 years plus on and I've still not found a pair.
Good to know you can supply drivers in case. I did read your M70 rescue saga long ago, by the way!
One thing: when you did the filters with Solens, did you hear a big difference in sound quality? Mine already sound very good indeed... And you did say that the second unmodified pair outrightly sounded good too three years ago.
Anybody please has the owner's manual for the M70 speaker? And a nice complete and readable service manual for that matter?
Just to let you see the speakers' condition Just one or two imperfections to the alu trim.
Very nice, they look great. If you think M70 are huge, then you should try a pair of BeoVox MS150.2 or M100 - I have both!
My BeoVox M100 are in quite poor condition right now though, but I will probably start refurbishing them soon. It's gonna be exiting to make a side by side comparison like you've done with your M70 and MC120.2. I wonder how much difference there is between M100 and MS150.2.

Yes, the sound of the M70 before cap replacement was very good with both pairs. And yes, the sound with the Solen was different but also very good.
Before cap replacement, I think there was a bit more high frequency energy. After cap replacement with the Solen, the sound was more neutral. In America, I would use the word "mellow" to describe the sound. Does "mellow" mean anything to you, Jacques?
I thought the service manual was on the site as part of a Beovox series.
EDIT
Click the attachment above for the crossover and parts list. I had to have gotten that page from the site when I was a gold member.
EDIT AGAIN
I like the sound of the M70 but I think they need a larger room than I have for them, plus a seating position further away than I currently have.
Thanks again. Yes I understand the word 'mellow' perfectly well!
But my hearing being what it is, I prefer a slightly bright speaker. As regards room size I have a 40 square-metre music room and the M70 are quite comfortable, having a dry quality and great bass when needed, but not overblown as it was when I got them demo-ed yesterday.
I have just bought the phase-link manual from Canada, and I believe there is one left!
Now I need the owner's guide!
Those look really nice Jacques
Beautiful pieces Jacques
Collecting Vintage B&O is not a hobby, its a lifestyle.
Thanks!I haven't yet cleaned the frets - which look better than seen on the flashed pics - but unlike those of the S45-2's, these are wooden, so they can't take a shower!
Be happy they aren't glued on.
Rich: Be happy they aren't glued on.
They are not. They have the foam panels under the grilles. Perhaps I could try carpet spray, although they were in a non-smoker's house so they are not very dirty.

I did not have to replace the cloth on my P30s. To clean the P30s, I used the sticky roller sold as a lint remover for clothes, going over them twice: first up and down, then side to side. After the lint remover I just gave them a good vacuum.
A warning on those M70s frets - they have a groove cut into them about half way up. I suspect the groove was cut to give the wood some flexibility to bend along with the concave baffle. However, the fret will break at that groove as I know all too well.
The way I see it, it was made for a two-step extraction: top first, then bottom. Hence the "hinge". But then we would need the manual, wouldn't we, to confirm this.
But yes it's fragile, as the pegs are. Not broken here fortunately. But I'm not looking forward to pulling them again.
The Shadows, Nivram. Oh that bass!
I listened to some organ music this morning. What's nice is that listening to those speakers is not at all frustrating. Everything at the right place in the right amount. Monitor, you said?
Yet I wonder about re-capping: even the fine and delicate treble sounds are all there. Human voices are perfect. Will replacing the caps lead to disappointment?
I know the job after my S45 and am not looking forward to it.
Big mistake!
I thought I'd replace electrolytics on the crossover. I first replaced the tweeter 8 μF with a bigger, higher quality MKT cap.
DON'T DO IT!
It will change the speaker's character, being less focussed and with less treble!
The old cap was perfectly good by the way.

Is it safe to assume you changed it back?
The P45 uses the same tweeter, by the way.
No, but I am contemplating reverting to electrolytics.
I used 8uf mylars on my P45's and a 25uf electrolytic. They sound a lot like my S45's. Plenty of treble and fairly punchy bass and even midtones.
A bit of a strange combo to be sure but I did it cause the cost of the 4 mylars was only $3.40 . So what the hell, why not and it all matched original spec. Not that I was really all that concerned about matching factory spec. That subject had already been discussed in detail on Soren Mexico's P45 thread. I dared to be a bit different.
I am happy.
I think the ESR of electrolytics is lower, which would perhaps explain the difference.
Update. Those M70 monitors...
Well I like 'em a lot. Even when I stop listening to my superb Philips Fidelio X1 headphones (a must hear, really), I am not shocked at what I hear, which is saying a lot about any speakers!
Currently: Beogram 4000/MMC20CL/Beomaster 8000/M70.
I had put the M70s away while I listened to S40s in the bedroom and S45-2s in the dining room. Now that I finally got around to the preventive maintenance on the S45-2s, they are back in the bedroom, the S40s put away, and the M70s are back in the dining room.
Yeah. The M70s rock.
Good!
Shall we look for M100s now?
Oh, I don't know. I've already got 3 surplus pairs already! My latest purchases have been microphones. I've been playing around with tape recording live music these days.
I think if I stumble onto some Pentas locally that need some work, I might take them on if the price is right.

Three surplus pairs of M100's? Let me know if you want to part with a pair.

Three surplus pairs of M100's?
Oh, no....3 surplus pairs of loudspeakers. Never even seen a pair of M100 in the flesh (unless Jaff had a pair and I don't remember).

Dang...I have a pair of M100 stands that I need the speakers for :)

I have a pair of M100 speakers but need the stands..
Could you please give me the dimensions?
//Bo.A long list...
Sure, I will take some pictures and measurements, then post them for you later
Bo, I didn't want to hijack Jacques's M70 thread with the M100 stand pictures so I sent you a PM with some pictures and dimensions.
