When turning on bv5 only the bv5 and the front speakers activate I have to press list and speaker5 to get the full package

Q. Is there a setting were it all fires up at the same time, saving my rear speakers going off and on

Hi bramble,

I suspect that Leosgonewild's BV5 is on a newer software version than yours and mine.

If you can't get the software updated, then all I can offer is the following:

- Your BV5 is automatically selecting the most appropriate number of speakers for the signal it receives at the S/PDIF input (from your set-top box).

- If it receives a stereo or stereo-with-surround audio track (i.e. 2 channels), it will use Speaker3 mode by default. This is typically the audio you get on normal Freeview channels.

- If it receives a 5.1 audio track it will use Speaker5 mode. This is typically the audio you get on Freeview HD channels and DVDs.

So to reduce the level of annoyance, try using the HD version of your favourite channels.

So I guess the bv 5 should turn on the speakers on its own!, if it is getting a DVD/digi signal in 5.1

Mines dose not you have to do it by selecting speaker 5......... So is there a setting I need to activate to allow bv5 to do this or is that it's one of te 1st gen bv5

Yes, when you play a DVD with a 5.1 soundtrack, the BV5 should automatically switch on the rear (surround) speakers. (Note: if you have a subwoofer connected it will always be on as long as the TV is on.)

If the TV is not switching on the rear (surround) speakers automatically, possible reasons are:

- The DVD you are playing does not have a 5.1 soundtrack, or you have not selected it in the SETUP menu of the disc itself.

- You have set your DVD player to down mix to stereo surround (2.0 or 2.1).

- The S/PDIF (digital) connection between the DVD player and the BV5 has come unplugged at either end.

- The S/PDIF cable is connected to the wrong digital input on the BV5. Make sure you have plugged it into the one associated with the SCART socket that you have the DVD player plugged into. The manual tells you which is which.

- The rear speakers may not have been correctly assigned as REAR LEFT and REAR RIGHT. Check this.

Let me know how that goes.

Lawrencejmcook,

Have done as per your advice, but alas the rear spk do not activate unless it is done manually.

At present I have bl4's up front bl6000 at rear + sub.

I have also checked setting on my sky+ box (they are fine) and my DVD player (fine) checked all scart cables and speaker connections are ok!Big Smile

So I am now looking at a possible fault with the bv5, as the sub activates along with the bl4's when switch bv5Sad

Could it be that the bl4's are to (new)

They all sound great 5.1 but a bit of a pain that you have to select to activate the rear set!

Maybe a call to my local dealer

Rgds & thanks

Hi bramble,

I doubt that the BL4s are causing the issue.

It is correct that when you switch on the BV5, the BL4s AND the subwoofer come on.

I am out of ideas on how to solve your problem. But I'm curious:

Question 1: while playing a 5.1 DVD, if you execute SPEAKER > GO on your Beo4, what does the BV5 display?

Question 2: what are you using to convert the Sky+ optical out to electrical digital in on the BV5?

SCART connections only carry stereo (2-channel) sound. You will never get 5.1 sound that way.

You need to ALSO connect the Sky+ box and DVD player to the BV5 using the S/PDIF connections I referred to in my previous post.

Then you will get true 5.1 sound, and the BV5 will automatically select the right speaker mode.

Great news, bramble. Good luck.

Just one little issue I think you may hit.

The BV5 has two ELECTRICAL digital inputs. They look like RCA phono sockets, and the cable looks like - heck, is - an RCA phono plug.

When I had a Sky+ box (3 years ago) it only had an OPTICAL digital out.

You cannot connect these two together without a converter (readily available on eBay for around 15GBP) and an optical digital lead (to go from the Sky+box to the converter).

I suggest that you check your Sky+ box and your DVD player to see whether their digital outputs are optical or electrical.

To summarise, you definitely need the cables you ordered.

But you may also need to order optical cables and optical-to-digital converters.

Now, I promise you that, no matter how much you might be put off by the details above, it will all be worth it when you hear the improvement in sound quality by using the digital feed. Don't give up.

Don't want to high-jack this thread, but my issue is very related. I have my MacMini attached to my BV5 only using stereo (scart-in). My BV5 is a later model with DVI, so it even comes with optical digital in (at least that's what I want to believe...). Unfortunately, neither my dealer nor I can get it to work using this digital-ins, so we just left it with scart (stereo only). I don't use 5.1 as I don't have any external speakers, so I didn't bother too much.

Is it worth for me to try the electrical-digital-in? Would this work in combination with the DVI? Will this have any difference in quality if I don't have external speakers or if I don't have more than 2 external speakers (I am thinking to buy BL12.3).

Thanks in advance!!!

I have some related question. I own a BV5, which is connected to my MacMini via DVI (video) and scart (audio). As a result, I also have stereo-only. This is not such a big deal as I don't have any external speakers connected anywayy.

My BV5 actually has optical-digital-ins, but I never got them to work when using DVI (video) at the same time. I also had my dealer try and he also didn't get it to work despite several tries.

From what I read above, it may be worth to give it a try with electrical-digital-in as well? A few questions:

1) Is my understanding even right that DVI/RCA-phone could give me HD video and 5.1 sound? Which input would you suggest me to use that it works in combination with a DVI video input?

2) Is there an improvement if just using the BV internal speakers? What about if I attach 2 external ones? I am about to buy BL 12.3 speakers to attach to it.

3) I was unaware that the phono-jacks are actually digital-ins. If so, could I even attach my MacMini via phono-jacks to my BC2, which is attached to my BV5. What I would be hoping from this setup that the BV5 turns on automatically when playing audio on the MacMini (i.e., sense signal from the phono-jack of the BC2 to turn on the BC2 and then the BV5).

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

lol - yes, bramble. One for DVD, one for SAT. Although I think mine are called AV1 and AV2, but I might be wrong. In any case, your manual should tell you which to use for which.

Glad you got there in the end. Happy listening! It will be like having a whole new DVD collection!

Interesting to read about the electrical digital in. I have the HD-ready BV5 and video connected to DVI (mapped as DVI). How would I need to configure my BV5 and which electrical-digital-in could I use to have digital audio? I currently have only stereo by connecting video to DVI and audio to scart. Thanks!

Hi Steve,

I have the non-HD BV5, so I can't give you precise instructions.

As mentioned in my posts below, the /PDIF digital in sockets look like RCA phono sockets, but in black instead of the usual red or white.

If you consult your user manual, or look at your socket panel on the back of the BV5, you should see them.

Or post a pic of the socket panel here, and au should be able to point them out to you.

Thanks for your message. Yes, I found them. There are two on the back and one on the side (next to the DVI). Unfortunately, they do not work for me in combination with DVI. Please let me know how it goes with you once the leads arrive. Also, please let me know how you configured them to work in the connection menu. Thanks in advance!!!

Hi Bramble,

I usually use The Fifth Element to show off my BV5 and attached speakers. I play the scene where the diva sings in the opera house. Beautiful voice and music, transitioning into gunshot and other sound effects.

Purists would argue that the DVD 5.1 soundtrack is merely an enhanced version of the original Dolby surround (2 channel) soundtrack, but it is very effective for this purpose.

Note: to get the best sound quality from your system, you need to correctly set up the speakers. Their location, distance from the listening position, and speaker level. This is all described in the user manual.
