Kiran: Jeff: The only thing I'd comment on, based on my experiences, is to make sure you have adequate cooling on the equipment closets and network room. That was the bane of my existence on one range, getting them to put adequate HVAC in to a very big server room packed with high speed network switches and computers and video hardware that dumped a ton of heat. The subcontractor they bought the "portable" building for this from dropped the building on site and then promptly went out of business, and had not done the cooling design right to begin with. Hope you get it finished soon and settle in and get to enjoy it. You probably won't know what to do with yourself! I have a big fat AC unit on the way to install... Funny how no rooms in the house have AC except my server room lol... And yes, I will be so bored after this... I might do this for a living and use my own house as a showroom...

Good to hear! I guess living in the UK (which I think is right) you like many don't use AC. As the saying goes, England has great climate but terrible weather. I live in the US South, and have lived in Florida. AC is NOT an option unless you enjoy heat stroke!
Personally, if I were going through what you are with that major a remodel, I'd have to take up serious drinking as a hobby.

Kiran:It will be a whole new floor with huge open spaces if I have it my way. There will be proper access to this floor via staircase and a lift. I'm not surprised you lost a Beo6 in all of that, I would expect you'd have lost a family member or two in there!

Fireplace? What kind of fireplace with glass over it? Is it one of those alcohol burning ones? I have a fireplace, open on only one side, that is run with gas and it percolates up through largish river rocks. At first I thought about an alcohol fireplace but I went with gas instead, with a remote control.

Kiran, it looks like you have some really good tradespeople working on your project. The plastering looks fantastic (I've just qualified as a level 2 plasterer, a course I did for a bit of fun and to learn a new skill); as does the carpentry/woodwork. It's hard to find really good builders, especially to take on a project of this size and to have the manpower and resources to do it in a reasonable time period.
It also seems to me that a lot of work is being completed very quickly on your project, and to a high standard. I can't imagine how many people are working on it each day but it's a great thread to follow and I am excited for you!
We are nearing the end of my own more modest project (2 bedroom terrace) with painting and decorating currently followed by the electricians third and final fix. Downstairs is then complete (after a staircase has gone in) and it's upstairs to then work on for the next couple of months or so.
I spent 6 months designing my home, which is more about open plan living and with a modern contemporary look and feel as opposed to adding bedrooms or extensions. It feels like I've been living on a building site for the last 6-8 months but slowly its starting to take shape and I can see the light!
Keep the photos coming and I am particularly amazed by all the networking and cabling you are having done, wow! That's a big task in itself. I like the choice of Luton by the way, I am a big fan and had it in my previous property but this newer one was too small to bother with really. Lutron is great though :)

Hi Kiran, quick question, just when do you expect all this to be finished? How long in total do you think the build will have taken by then? I hope you're not trying to live in the house during all of this!
And that install of the Beo4 and the iPad and control panel is just slick as can be, looks great.
How long I would like know? The loft seems to be quite a thing to do.

Wow, you must have the patience of a saint, there's no way I could stand that much chaos for that long. I'd be climbing the walls, or worse, climbing a water tower with a rifle! Your build reminds me of things I see on the UK show Grand Designs.
Just dealing with the basement here being converted to a mother-in-law apartment was bad enough and made me think I'd be better off if I shot my contractor. Annoying man who never missed an opportunity to under perform.
I hope you get to the end soon and get to enjoy the fruits of your labors.

Seems to be a very common sentiment with everyone I know who's worked with a building contractor unfortunately. I finally found a good one though, brother-in-law of my roofer (who I'm only sort of satisfied with), but the contractor is great. His work is always done well, his guys work together well and are very competent, and one of them likes to garden but not eat vegetables, so he always brings us amazing produce. Wish I'd known of him before the renovation of the basement.

I feel with you. I've been renotivating my very small ( compared to your house ) 2200 sq.ft apartment and I was supposed to finish in 8 months with an estimated cost ~ $120,000 .
So far I spent $295,000 in 16 months and I still have $150,000 to go.

Wow - certainly I do my own wiring and also copied Kiran with iPads on the wall - great idea that I would never have thought of had he not done it! - I use them with ITunes Remote which controls a computer which airplays to a playmaker and then I get music all over the house through the B&O kit.
Also interesting to note the difference between doing this sort of thing yourself and getting someone else to do it - I was thinking that the Home Automation stuff must have cost more like twice the amount.
