Mark:

along with watches I also seem to collect pens, apart from Mont Blanc I have a number of Rotring which I feel are similar to B&O, technically proven with great design.

Any others with a pen habit ? we tend to forget there is more to design than designing.

Me! Mark. I love a good pen. Diablo de Cartier Double C All Over Ballpoint. It's a beautiful writing instrument. I also love hotel pens - some are really comfortable to write with.

I picked the Cartier because of how it felt in my hand and a bonus it goes well with my watch :-) I picked it up over a faber castell octogon shaped petit pen in silver.

Decided to treat myself to my first decent watch and currently favourite on my list is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 39mm stainless steel with blue face 40th anniversary limited edition.  Any thoughts from the watch connoisseurs as to whether or not this is a sensible choice?

Speaking of writing instruments, uber designer Marc Newson has designed one for Hermes.

Thepuma, it is a great choice. Classy design, top quality and finishing, comfortable. The only alternative to Royal Oak is Patek Philippe 5711

Dave Hutton:

Here's my everyday watch.

Its a Rolex Explorer 2 - and apparently is a Steve McQueen special, whatever that is and worth a bit to a collector - certainly more than my late father in law paid for itSmile

Looks a bit gold in the pic but its stainless steel (must be reflections of something else I guess)

DJ

Lovely.

Quite sought after, and prices at around 10-20K depending on what mark and condition.

These two are indeed something else. Big Smile

Especially the Rose gold. The forged Carbon one is amazing out in the sun. It has so many dimensions to its surface.

Hi Mark,

I don't buy pens to collect them - I buy them to restore them... The collection happens as a result, although it's always changing as the pens come and go...

Thanks for sharing Geoff really appreciated.

Pens are another soft spot of mine, I think its the engineer in me which drives me to seek out certain designs and designers, out of interest how do you display your pens.

Mark:

Pens are another soft spot of mine, I think its the engineer in me which drives me to seek out certain designs and designers, out of interest how do you display your pens.

I keep them on display inside a fabric bag that I stitched from an old Hallowe'en costume, inside a plastic container, on a high shelf in my clothes closet.

My inspiration for this technique comes from a scene in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy which reads:

“But the plans were on display…”

“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”

“That’s the display department.”

“With a flashlight.”

“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”

“So had the stairs.”

“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

Cheers

If anyone is traveling through London Heathrow, the watches including rolex were 20% of the retail price.

My gold datejust was £6,100. In Heathrow it was £4,850!

Bike Rooms have the Pinerello Dogma team bike for £5500 at the moment. Reduced from £9000 it's a fantastic piece of craftsmanship.

I am not quite shure:

Is the Pinerello bike built for road racing? Is there any biking expert to give a comment on its usability?

Or is it a only a very nice piece for display?
